Optimal toolpath design of additive manufactured composite cylindrical structures

Structural design optimization for additive manufacturing is primarily focused on planar layer-by-layer processes and design of composite cylindrical structures does not often accommodate manufacturing constraints. In this study, we propose to optimize the toolpath trajectory of additively manufactured composite cylinders comprised of multiple thin cylindrical annuli. Additionally, our printing process is based on direct ink writing in which short carbon fibers in a thermoset resin are extruded through a moving nozzle to build up a structure. Since the fibers are primarily aligned in the flow direction of the extrudate, the printing trajectory influences the material properties of the composite structure. To accommodate this, we define the toolpaths as contours of parameterized level-set functions. This parameterization allows us to optimize the material properties and impose manufacturing constraints such as no-overlap, no-sag, minimum radius of curvature, and continuity of the toolpaths. Several examples illustrate the optimization procedure.

Integrated control-structure design of the JPL phase B testbed

Structure and damper optimization problems driven by control objective metrics are developed for the optimal design of a testbed structure emulating a spaceborne interferometer. The structure optimization problem uses a multiobjective criterion to generate a family of optimized design that allows trades to be made between the competing objectives of minimizing structural mass and maximizing disturbance attenuation. The damper optimization problems focus on the placement and tuning of viscous elements to maximally damp selected modes of the testbed structure. The optimization techniques are verified on a large model of the testbed.

Structure-based lead optimization to improve the antifungal potency of the tetrahydroimidazo pyridine inhibitors targeted to Candida albicans dihydrofolate reductase and lanosterol 14-alpha-demethylase

We investigate the binding and inhibition profiles for a selected dataset of tetrahydroimidazo pyridine molecules against Candida albicans dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) and lanosterol 14-alpha-demethylase (CYP51). A hit molecule was screened and identified through Lipinski’s rule of five, ADMET (absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity), and the molecular docking. Some inhibitors of our design have shown positive drug scores, good solubilities, and high docking scores over the selected dataset. The first-principles calculation based on the density functional theory was carried out to understand how the electronic distributions of frontier orbitals of molecules affect their inhibition profiles. The present structure-based approach enabled us to design new pharmacophore analogs with improved ADMET profile, drug scores, and docking scores against selected receptors. .

An optimization-based integrated controls-structures design methodology for flexible space structures

An approach for an optimization-based integrated controls-structures design is presented for a class of flexible spacecraft that require fine attitude pointing and vibration suppression. The integrated design problem is posed in the form of simultaneous optimization of both structural and control design variables. The approach is demonstrated by application to the integrated design of a generic space platform and to a model of a ground-based flexible structure. The numerical results obtained indicate that the integrated design approach can yield spacecraft designs that have substantially superior performance over a conventional design wherein the structural and control designs are performed sequentially. For example, a 40-percent reduction in the pointing error is observed along with a slight reduction in mass, or an almost twofold increase in the controlled performance is indicated with more than a 5-percent reduction in the overall mass of the spacecraft (a reduction of hundreds of kilograms).

Concrete material science: Past, present, and future innovations

Concrete is flying off, but it is simultaneously facing tremendous challenges in terms of environmental impact, financial needs, societal acceptance and image. Based on an historical approach of the science of concrete and reinforced concrete in particular, this paper calls for the exploration of radical changes in three key aspects of concrete use: reinforcement, binder content, and implementation methods. More precisely, it is suggested that, in parallel to the introduction of robotic fabrication methods, digital technologies may be key for the introduction several innovations like (i) rebar-free reinforcement using non-convex granular media; (ii) compression-optimized concrete structures, using topology optimization, architectural geometry, and 3D-printing or origami-patterned formworks; (iii) truly digital concrete through the coupling of massive data collection and deep learning.

Integrated process-structure–property–performance optimization of cold-sprayed zinc coatings on AZ91 magnesium alloy

High-pressure die cast (HPDC) AZ91 magnesium alloy is widely used in automotive components such as transmission housings and brackets for its excellent strength-to-weight ratio. Zinc-based cold spray coatings can be applied selectively to vulnerable areas to enhance corrosion resistance, minimize galvanic coupling with dissimilar metals, and eliminate the need for full-surface oxide coatings, making the process more efficient and targeted. A comprehensive evaluation of 16 combinations of nitrogen carrier gas temperatures and pressures led to the identification of an optimal range of process parameters, yielding Zn coatings with porosity <0.5 % by area, wear rates reduced by a factor of two compared to uncoated AZ91, and adhesion strengths up to 35 MPa. The enhanced mechanical performance of the coating is attributed to the low porosity and the formation of a metallurgical bond at the coating-substrate interface. Corrosion studies using macroscale potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) revealed a significant decrease in corrosion rate and a shift to more noble corrosion potentials (ZCP) for coated substrates. Furthermore, the Zn cold-sprayed samples exhibited significantly lower corrosion-induced evolved hydrogen content compared to the base AZ91 substrate and AZ91 coated with industrial coatings, demonstrating that the Zn layer effectively protects the substrate from the corrosive environment. Overall, cold spray Zn coatings significantly improve the mechanical and corrosion performance of AZ91 Mg alloys, addressing key material challenges and enabling their broader use in automotive applications.

Exploring Structure-Sensitive Relations for Small Species Adsorption Using Machine Learning

Accurate prediction of adsorption energies on heterogeneous catalyst surfaces is crucial to predicting reactivity and screening materials. Adsorption linear scaling relations have been developed extensively but often lack accuracy and apply to one adsorbate and a single binding site type at a time. These facts undermine their ability to predict structure sensitivity and optimal catalyst structure. Using machine learning on nearly 300 density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate that generalized coordination number scaling relations hold well for oxygen- and high-valency carbon-binding species but fail for others. Here we reveal that the valency and the electronic coupling of a species with the surface, along with the site type and its coordination environment, are critical for small species adsorption. The model simultaneously predicts the adsorption energy and preferred site and significantly outperforms linear scalings in accuracy. It can expose the structure sensitivity of chemical reactions and enable enhanced catalyst activity via engineering particle shape and facet defects. The generality of our methodology is validated by training the model with transition metal data and transferring it to predict adsorption energies on single-atom alloys.

Second derivatives of the flutter velocity and the optimization of aircraft structures.

Equations for the second partial derivatives of the eigenvalues of the flutter equation along with the equations for finding the second partial derivatives of the flutter velocity of an aircraft structure with respect to the structural parameters are derived. These partial derivatives are used to develop expressions for the step size in a projected gradient search along a constant mass hyperlane. A projected gradient search along with a gradient mass and a gradient velocity search is used to minimize the mass of a box beam which supports a lifting surface.

High efficiency graded band-gap Al/x/Ga/1-x/As-GaAs p-on-n solar cell

A theoretical analysis of p-on-n (p/n) graded band-gap Al/x/Ga/1-x/As-GaAs solar cells including all practical energy loss mechanisms predicts air mass zero efficiencies of 17.3%. The energy losses include those due to spectral reflection, surface, bulk and junction recombination currents, and series resistance. The device consists of a layer of p-type Al/x/Ga/1-x/As 3.5-micron thick on top of an n-type GaAs substrate. The graded band-gap is achieved by decreasing x from 0.35 at the surface to zero at the junction. The same structure without the graded Al concentration, no longer an optimum device, has an efficiency of 10.4%. The primary function of the graded band-gap material is the reduction of surface and bulk recombination losses in the surface layer by a built-in electric field. A comparison of the p/n structure with an optimized n/p structure indicates that the latter has a slightly higher efficiency (17.7%) for assumed minority carrier diffusion lengths and surface recombination velocity.
