Emergent flat band electronic structure in a VSe 2 /Bi 2 Se 3 heterostructure

Flat band electronic states are proposed to be a fundamental tool to achieve various quantum states of matter at higher temperatures due to the enhanced electronic correlations. However, materials with such peculiar electronic states are rare and often rely on subtle properties of the band structures. Here, by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we show the emergent flat band in a VSe 2 / Bi 2 Se 3 heterostructure. Our photoemission study demonstrates that the flat band covers the entire Brillouin zone and exhibits 2D nature with a complex circular dichroism. In addition, the Dirac cone of Bi 2 Se 3 is not reshaped by the flat band even though they overlap in proximity of the Dirac point. These features make this flat band distinguishable from the ones previously found. Thereby, the observation of a flat band in the VSe 2 / Bi 2 Se 3 heterostructure opens a promising pathway to realize strongly correlated quantum effects in topological materials.

Orbital contributions in the element-resolved valence electronic structure of Bi 2 Se 3

In this work, we studied the bulk band structure of a topological insulator (TI) Bi 2 Se 3 and determined the contributions of the Bi and Se orbital states to the valence bands using standing-wave excited hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (SW-HAXPES). This SW technique can provide the element-resolved information and extract individual Bi and Se contributions to the Bi2Se3 valence band. Comparisons with density-functional theory calculations (local density approximation and GW) reveal that the Bi 6s, Bi 6p, and Se 4p states are dominant in the Bi 2 Se 3 HAXPES valence band. Furthermore, these findings pave a way for studying the element-resolved band structure and orbital contributions of this class of TIs.

Configurational forces in electronic structure calculations using Kohn-Sham density functional theory

Here we derive the expressions for configurational forces in Kohn-Sham density functional theory, which correspond to the generalized variational force computed as the derivative of the Kohn-Sham energy functional with respect to the position of a material point x. These configurational forces that result from the inner variations of the Kohn-Sham energy functional provide a unified framework to compute atomic forces as well as stress tensor for geometry optimization. Importantly, owing to the variational nature of the formulation, these configurational forces inherently account for the Pulay corrections. The formulation presented in this work treats both pseudopotential and all-electron calculations in a single framework, and employs a local variational real-space formulation of Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT) expressed in terms of the nonorthogonal wave functions that is amenable to reduced-order scaling techniques. We demonstrate the accuracy and performance of the proposed configurational force approach on benchmark all-electron and pseudopotential calculations conducted using higher-order finite-element discretization. To this end, we examine the rates of convergence of the finite-element discretization in the computed forces and stresses for various materials systems, and, further, verify the accuracy from finite differencing the energy. Wherever applicable, we also compare the forces and stresses with those obtained from Kohn-Sham DFT calculations employing plane-wave basis (pseudopotential calculations) and Gaussian basis (all-electron calculations). Finally, we verify the accuracy of the forces on large materials systems involving a metallic aluminum nanocluster containing 666 atoms and an alkane chain containing 902 atoms, where the Kohn-Sham electronic ground state is computed using a reduced-order scaling subspace projection technique

Epitaxial growth and electronic structure of oxyhydride SrVO{sub 2}H thin films

Oxyhydride SrVO{sub 2}H epitaxial thin films were fabricated on SrTiO{sub 3} substrates via topotactic hydridation of oxide SrVO{sub 3} films using CaH{sub 2}. Structural and composition analyses suggested that the SrVO{sub 2}H film possessed one-dimensionally ordered V-H{sup −}-V bonds along the out-of-plane direction. The synthesis temperature could be lowered by reducing the film thickness, and the SrVO{sub 2}H film was reversible to SrVO{sub 3} by oxidation through annealing in air. Photoemission and X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements revealed the V{sup 3+} valence state in the SrVO{sub 2}H film, indicating that the hydrogen existed as hydride. Furthermore, the electronic density of states was highly suppressed at the Fermi energy, consistent with the prediction that tetragonal distortion induces metal to insulation transition.

Environmental Screening Effects in 2D Materials: Renormalization of the Bandgap, Electronic Structure, and Optical Spectra of Few-Layer Black Phosphorus

Few-layer black phosphorus has recently emerged as a potential 2D semiconductor, notable for its widely tunable bandgap, highly anisotropic properties, and theoretically predicted large exciton binding energies. To avoid degradation, it has become common practice to encapsulate black phosphorus devices. It is generally assumed that this encapsulation does not qualitatively affect their optical properties. In this work, we show that the contrary is true. We have performed ab initio GW and GW plus Bethe–Salpeter equation (GW-BSE) calculations to determine the quasiparticle (QP) band structure and optical spectrum of one-layer (1L) through four-layer (4L) black phosphorus, with and without encapsulation between hexagonal boron nitride and sapphire. We show that black phosphorus is exceptionally sensitive to environmental screening. Encapsulation reduces the exciton binding energy in 1L by as much as 70% and completely eliminates the presence of a bound exciton in the 4L structure. The reduction in the exciton binding energies is offset by a similarly large renormalization of the QP bandgap so that the optical gap remains nearly unchanged, yet the nature of the excited states and the qualitative features of the absorption spectrum change dramatically.

Topochemical Synthesis and Electronic Structure of High-Crystallinity Infinite-Layer Nickelates on an Orthorhombic Substrate

Superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates has stirred much research interest, to which questions regarding the nature of superconductivity remain elusive. A critical leap forward to address these intricate questions is through the growth of high-crystallinity infinite-layer nickelates, including the “parent” phase. Here, we report the synthesis of a high-quality thin-film nickelate, NdNiO 2 . This is achieved through the growth of a perovskite precursor phase (NdNiO 3 ) of superior crystallinity on the NdGaO 3 substrate by off-axis RF magnetron sputtering and a low-temperature topochemical reduction using NaH. We observe a nonlinear Hall effect at low temperatures in this “non-doped” phase. We further study the electronic properties using advanced X-ray scattering and first-principles calculations. We observe spectroscopic indications of the enhanced two-dimensionality and a reduced hybridization of Nd 5d and Ni 3d orbitals. These findings unlock new pathways for preparing high-quality infinite-layer nickelates and provide new insights into the intrinsic features of these compounds.

The Electron Structure of Metallic Layers in the Quasi-Two-Dimensional Dual-Layered Organic Metal (BETS){sub 4}HgBr{sub 4}(C{sub 6}H{sub 4}Cl{sub 2})

We have studied the behavior of the Shubnikov–de Haas (SdH) oscillations in the quasi-two-dimensional dual-layered organic metal (BETS){sub 4}HgBr{sub 4}(C{sub 6}H{sub 4}Cl{sub 2}). It is established that the spectrum of SdH oscillations in this compound agrees well with theoretical calculations and qualitatively coincides with the analogous spectrum of (ET){sub 4}HgBr{sub 4}(C{sub 6}H{sub 4}Cl{sub 2}) isostructural organic metal. The fractional substitution of sulfur by selenium in the cationic layer strongly decreases the values of cyclotron masses. This decrease is most probably caused by weakening of the electron–phonon interaction.

Ultra-stable trimetallic phosphide heterostructure with regulated electronic structure for overall water splitting at high current densities

Developing ultra-stable electrocatalysts for highly efficient overall water splitting at high current density (HCD) is critical for renewable hydrogen/oxygen production in the industry. However, the most active electrocatalysts for large current-driven water splitting are seriously handicapped by insufficient electrical contact kinetics due to the intensive bubble overflow. Herein, we demonstrate the ultra-stable trimetallic phosphides of NiFeP/NiCoP catalysts on a hydrophilic Ni foam skeleton via a corrosion-hydrothermal-phosphating strategy. The optimized NiFeP/NiCoP catalyst stabilizes for 600 h at -1 A cm -2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline solution, and it only needs low overpotentials of 237 and 314 mV to drive HER and OER at 1 A cm -2 , respectively. As expected, the optimized NiFeP/NiCoP electrode maintains 1000 h at 0.5 A cm -2 for water splitting, ranking among the top performers among reported catalysts. Such excellent performance could be attributed to the fast electron transfer for electrochemical reactions, the electron-deficient Fe/Ni sites contribute to forming robust metal oxyhydroxide during OER, and electron-rich Co sites facilitate H adsorption during HER. In conclusion, the findings present a highly promising candidate for ultra-stable non-noble metal electrocatalysts, offering a viable option for hydrogen/oxygen supply for fuel cells and metal-air batteries.

Electronic Structure and Magnetic Properties of Cobalt-Doped Nonstoichiometric Rutile Thin Films

The coherent potential method has been applied for the investigation of Co substitutional doping influence on the spectral and magnetic properties of TiO{sub 2} rutile (100) surface. Both stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric oxygen compositions have been considered. For the stoichiometric case, the energy spectrum corresponds to half-metallic ferromagnet. The Co ions are in 2 + formal oxidation state with a spin magnetic moment of 0.8 μ{sub B}. The presence of oxygen vacancies makes the surface insulating and increases the Co spin magnetic moment value.

Study of Electronic Structure, Magnetism, and Half-Metallicity of New Heusler Compounds CsTmO{sub 2} (Tm = Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu)

The density functional calculations were performed using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FPLAPW) method for new Heusler alloys CsTmO{sub 2} (Tm = Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu). All compounds were stable in FM AlCu{sub 2}Mn-type structure. Results revealed that these alloys can be experimentally synthesized according to the calculated cohesive and formation energies. CsTmO{sub 2} (Tm = Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu) alloys in AlCu{sub 2}Mn-type and CuHg{sub 2}Ti-type structures were half-metallic ferromagnets. The origin of half-metallicity in CsNiO{sub 2} alloy was also discussed. The total magnetic moment of CsTmO{sub 2} (Tm = Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu) alloys in both structures were 3 μ{sub B} per formula unit and obeyed the Slater-Pauling rule (M{sub tot} = 22 − Z{sub tot}). The relationship between the magnetism and half-metallicity of all compounds and the lattice constants was also studied. The half-metallic character in combined alloys CsTmO{sub 2} (Tm = Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu) improved in comparison with Heusler alloys including transition metals which indicated that they may be good candidates for practical applications in spintronics.

Synthesis, Electronic Structure, and Reactivity of a Planar Four–Coordinate, Cobalt–Imido Complex

A four-coordinate cobalt imido complex, ( tBu mPNP)Co=NMes ( tBu mPNP = modified PNP pincer ligand) has been synthesized from addition of 2,4,6-trimethylphenylazide (Mes–N 3 ) to the corresponding dinitrogen complex. The solid-state structure determined by X-ray diffraction established a rare, idealized planar geometry with a Co=N bond distance of 1.716(2) Å. Magnetic measurements revealed an S = 1 ground state with CAS-SCF calculations supporting radical character on the imide nitrogen. Here, thermolysis of the cobalt-imido compound induced selective insertion of the imido group into a Co–P bond and yielded a three-coordinate cobalt complex with a distorted T-shaped geometry. Transition state analysis conducted with DFT calculations established the thermodynamic stability of the P–N coupled product and provided insight into the exclusive selectivity.

Oxidation states of binary oxides from data analytics of the electronic structure

Despite their simplicity, the concepts of oxidation states (OS) and Bader charge are widely used in the analysis of experimental data and theoretical calculations for gaining physical and chemical insights. However, a connection between the OS and Bader charge has not been generally demonstrated. To our knowledge, all previous works concerning this connection were limitted to a small number of compounds. The aim of this work was to find a dependency between OS and Bader charge for a large number of compounds from an open database. Using a simple machine learning algorithm, linear regression, we show that a correlation indeed exists for the binary oxide systems. The applicability of determining OS by Bader charges for binary oxides in mixed-valence compounds and surfaces is considered and the limits of validity of the approach is discussed.

Underlying simplicity of 5f unoccupied electronic structure

Using a simple empirical model based upon the bremsstrahlung isochromat spectroscopy of elemental Th, it is possible to explain the recent high energy resolution fluorescence detection measurements of UF 4 (n = 2) and UCd 11 (n = 3) as well as the new inverse photoelectron spectroscopy of Pu 2 O 3 (n = 5), where n is the 5f occupation number. Furthermore, a critical issue in this analysis is the assumption that the Th 5f states are essentially empty, which will be confirmed both experimentally and computationally. Thus, for 5f systems, this simple model provides a unified and consistent picture of 5f unoccupied density of states in simple, localized systems, as the 5f occupation varies in the early part of the series, for n = 0, 2, 3, and 5.

Bandgap and electronic structure of CaSiN 2 : Experiment and theory

Abstract We interrogate the electronic properties of the nitridosilicate CaSiN 2 as determined using soft X‐ray absorption and emission spectroscopy, which probe directly the partial electronic density of states. We compare our measurements to full potential, all electron density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Good agreement between experiment and theory is obtained, and the electronic bandgap of CaSiN 2 is determined to be 3.95 ± 0.3 eV, in contrast with our predicted value of 4.78 eV that was calculated using the modified Becke–Johnson exchange‐correlation functional with the DFT framework.

Electronic Structure and Mechanical Properties of Solvated Montmorillonite Clay Using Large-Scale DFT Method

Montmorillonite clay (MMT) has been widely used in engineering and environmental applications as a landfill barrier and toxic waste repository due to its unique property as an expandable clay mineral that can absorb water easily. This absorption process rendered MMT to be highly exothermic due to electrostatic interactions among molecules and hydrogen bonds between surface atoms. A detailed study of a large supercell model of structural clay enables us to predict long-term nuclear waste storage. Herein, a large solvent MMT model with 4071 atoms is studied using ab initio density functional theory. The DFT calculation and analysis clarify the important issues, such as bond strength, solvation effect, elasticity, and seismic wave velocities. These results are compared to our previous study on crystalline MMT (dry). The solvated MMT has reduced shear modulus (G), bulk modulus (K), and Young’s modulus (E). We observe that the conduction band (CB) in the density of states (DOS) of solvated MMT model has a single, conspicuous peak at –8.5 eV. Moreover, the atom-resolved partial density of states (PDOS) summarizes the roles played by each atom in the DOS. These findings illuminate numerous potential sophisticated applications of MMT clay.
