Horn Location Sensors (HLS) for LBNF

The Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) will deliver the world's most powerful muon neutrino beam to the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), initially operating at 1.2 MW and upgradeable to 2.4 MW. Ensuring the accurate direction of this beam is critical for DUNE's precision goals. This talk introduces the Horn Location Sensors (HLS) system, designed to provide precise, relative measurements of the focusing horns, targets, and beam position monitors in the neutrino beamline. The HLS system employs high-precision FSI-based hydrostatic leveling sensors to track vertical motion and tilt, achieving precision on the order of 0.1 mm. Built for minimal maintenance in radioactive environments, the HLS system ensures precise alignment of beamline components during high-power operations. This system is essential for maintaining beam accuracy and enhancing DUNE's scientific performance.

Upcycling of CFRP Waste: Viable Eco-friendly Chemical Recycling and Manufacturing of Novel Repairable and Recyclable Composites

The rapid growth of the carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite market has driven researchers to find value-added applications for outdated prepregs, manufacturing scraps, and end-of-life components. Currently, most CFRP waste is incinerated or landfilled, which squanders its residual value and burdens the environment. Various mechanical, thermal, and chemical approaches have been attempted to recover the carbon fiber, polymer matrix, or both. However, these current practices are often costly, energy-intensive, and generate secondary waste and pollution. To address these shortcomings, this project aims to develop a viable and sustainable chemical recycling technology for CFRP waste that can efficiently and cost-effectively decompose the polymer matrix and manufacture new recyclable composites from both the recovered carbon fiber (rCF) and decomposed matrix polymer (DMP).

An Efficient Storage-Driven Machine Learning Model for Performance in the Era of Multimodal Scientific Data

Scientific workflows are increasingly relying on machine learning (ML), simulation, and hybrid techniques to predict, understand, and optimize the behavior of complex experiments. High-performance computing has greatly improved researchers’ ability to acquire diverse data modalities in these workflows. Recent studies suggest that the performance of machine learning models can be improved by integrating data from various sources. Unfortunately, these workloads pose unprecedent pressure on the network storage to meet the demands associated with accessing these multimodal data. To mitigate the impact of intensive IO, we propose a solution that utilizes a multi-tier High-Performance Computing (HPC) distributed storage and data processing framework, placing computation where the data resides for better performance. By adopting this project, the scientific community will gain new opportunities to explore multimodal storage-driven possibilities, integrating multiple scientific data sources with advanced streaming frameworks. Additionally, our framework effectively utilizes computing resources and bridges the gaps identified by HPC experts. Our proposed approach tackles scalability and persistence challenges by leveraging native persistency, which has posed difficulties in traditional approaches. Furthermore, we seek to enhance fault-tolerance and load-balance of computations by leveraging real-time streaming in diverse scientific computing environments, thereby propelling advanced scientific computing research into the next generation.

Developing a Prototype Methodology to Rank CO2-EOR Wells and Assess Their Reuse Potential for Geologic Carbon Sequestration

This study presents a prototype methodology for evaluating the reuse potential of Class II CO₂-enhanced oil recovery (CO₂-EOR) wells as Class VI wells for geologic carbon sequestration. The approach focuses on assessing wellbore construction materials—casing, cement, tubing, and packers—based on U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Class VI well conversion guidelines. Utilizing Python scripts and JSON representations, the methodology automates checks on digitized Texas Railroad Commission (TRRC) data to rank wells based on regulatory and integrity criteria. Key factors include casing integrity, cementing techniques, tubing compatibility, and packer selection. Due to limitations in digitized data, manual verification is required for certain sections. Future enhancements include incorporating non-digitized data via web scraping and machine learning. This research provides a practical framework for well owners and regulators, supporting informed decision-making for sustainable CO₂ storage.

Increasing Radon Daughter Plate-out onto Superconducting Qubits

Radon daughter plate-out may pose a fundamental limitation to realizing large-scale superconducting quantum computers. Radon daughters plated-out onto a superconducting qubit chip can decay, releasing energy into the substrate, producing phonons. Phonon induced quasiparticles generate bit flip errors and reduce coherence times. We seek to increase plate-out on chips to enable future study of the impact of Radon on coherence times. In this project, we utilize COMSOL Multiphysics simulations to finalize design for a device to increase radon plate-out.

Hydrogen production from high-volume organic construction and demolition wastes

The Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) has partnered with Simonpietri Enterprises, LLC (SEL) with the objective of developing an integrated waste preparation, gasification, and syngas cleanup process capable of using a high-volume, negative-value, highly contaminated feedstock consisting of construction and demolition (C&D) waste to economically produce 99+% pure hydrogen. The target is to achieve $\$$1/kg H2 at a modular scale ranging from 5- to 50-MWe-equivalent size by testing the gasification of organic C&D debris containing treated waste lumber and construction materials, permanently sequestering contaminants into the ash. C&D debris waste is one the largest-volume waste streams in the United States; is already aggregated and available across the country, lending itself to hub operations; and has fewer alternatives for energy conversion than are available for coal, biomass, and municipal solid waste because of contamination from treated lumber and other construction materials.
