Visualization tools for the processing of airglow data from RAIDS

In anticipation of large data sets associated with a number of atmospheric imaging instruments being prepared for long term global coverage, NRL is developing graphical interfaces for all aspects of the program. For the first of these projects, RAIDS (the Remote Atmospheric and Ionospheric Detection System), a graphical approach to data handling, visualization, and analysis is envisioned and will set the stage for the satellites that follow. An overall system of hardware and a set of software 'tools,' that will allow for both the routine handling of all data and the analysis of large data sets assembled by scientists and instrument engineers, are currently being developed. The software for standard processing and visualization of instrument data is independent of computer platform and will allow for easy adaptation from one experiment to another. The processing will produce data sets that have similar characteristics, allowing for easy comparison of data obtained under similar circumstances. The visualization of both the engineering and scientific data is an important part of the system. By creating graphical environments for engineering evaluations and for scientific analysis data sets can be viewed and analyzed rapidly. This rapid analysis of data will contribute towards a greater portion of the RAIDS data being utilized.

Flow studies in close-coupled ventral nozzles for STOVL aircraft

Flow in a generic ventral nozzle system was studied experimentally and analytically with the PARC3D computational fluid dynamics program (a full Navier-Stokes equations solver) in order to evaluate the program's ability to predict system performance and internal flow patterns. A generic model of a tailpipe with a rectangular ventral nozzle, about one-third of full size, was tested with unheated air at steady-state pressure ratios up to 4.0. Measurements showed about 5.5 percent flow-turning loss and reasonable nozzle performance coefficients. The flow turned more than the designed 90 deg, causing an aftward axial component in the total thrust. Flow behavior into and through the ventral duct is discussed and illustrated with paint streak flow visualization photographs. PARC3D graphic images are shown for comparison with the experiment photographs. The program successfully predicted internal flow patterns; it also computed thrust and discharge coefficients within 1 percent of measured values.

Development of IR Contrast Data Analysis Application for Characterizing Delaminations in Graphite-Epoxy Structures

Objective: Develop infrared (IR) flash thermography application based on use of a calibration standard for inspecting graphite-epoxy laminated/honeycomb structures. Background: Graphite/Epoxy composites (laminated and honeycomb) are widely used on NASA programs. Composite materials are susceptible for impact damage that is not readily detected by visual inspection. IR inspection can provide required sensitivity to detect surface damage in composites during manufacturing and during service. IR contrast analysis can provide characterization of depth, size and gap thickness of impact damage. Benefits/Payoffs: The research provides an empirical method of calibrating the flash thermography response in nondestructive evaluation. A physical calibration standard with artificial flaws such as flat bottom holes with desired diameter and depth values in a desired material is used in calibration. The research devises several probability of detection (POD) analysis approaches to enable cost effective POD study to meet program requirements.
