A combined experimental and modelling study of granite hydrothermal alteration
Geochemical reactions can induce significant changes of rock reservoir porosity and permeability via mineral dissolution and precipitation processes, affecting the long-term fluid behaviour within various geological systems. Here, the understanding and quantification of these reactions rely on field and experimental studies and on the predictions of reactive transport models. The present study was aimed at assessing the extent to which current geochemical models integrating available mineral dissolution/precipitation rate equations can reproduce the experimental data obtained from 4 to 17-day long hydrothermal alteration experiments of a muscovite-biotite granite and, thus, help provide an accurate description of the evolution of geothermal systems within granitic reservoirs. The experiments were conducted at a constant temperature of 180 °C and over an aqueous fluid pH range of 2 to 8.5, using both mixed-flow and static batch reactors. Modelled major element (K, Al, Si, Ca, and Mg) concentrations were generally in satisfactory agreement with the corresponding measured elemental fluxes – the differences between modelled and experimental values were generally within a factor of 5 – and the predicted identity and mass of formed secondary phases were consistent with the microscopic observations of the reacted solids. However, larger differences between measured and modelled element concentrations were observed when significant amounts of secondary phases formed, notably at pH 2 to 3, and for longer-term batch experiments. Much of this concentration difference stems from the underestimation of the amounts of Al-phases formed at acid to near-neutral pH. Although an idealized rock composition was considered, the observed mismatch between model calculations and experimental data can be attributed to inadequate mineral precipitation reaction rates and a poor description of reactive surface areas in existing geochemical modelling codes. More accurate quantification of precipitation kinetics, including nucleation and growth, and improved descriptions of the temporal change of mineral surface area would enhance the predictive capabilities of reactive transport models and benefit, particularly, the efforts aimed at increasing the sustainability of EGS reservoirs.
Review of hybrid HVDC systems combining line communicated converter and voltage source converter
Hybrid HVDC system, which consists of the advantages of line commutated converter (LCC) and voltage source converter (VSC), is an emerging power transmission system. This paper presents a review of four LCC-VSC hybrid HVDC topologies. The first topology is the pole-hybrid HVDC system, in which the LCC and VSC form the positive- and negative-pole respectively. The second one is the terminal-hybrid HVDC system; in this topology one terminal adopts LCC and the other terminal adopts VSC. The series converter-hybrid HVDC system is the third topology wherein each terminal is formed by LCC and VSC in series. The fourth hybrid topology under consideration is a parallel converter-hybrid HVDC system with LCC and VSC connected in parallel in each terminal. Here, the main contribution of this paper is a comprehensive analysis and comparison of the four mentioned hybrid topologies in terms of PQ operating zone, power flow reversal method, and DC fault ride-through strategy.

Optimization of a Packed Particle Magnetocaloric Refrigerator: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study
Magnetocaloric refrigeration has strong potential towards achieving high efficiency hydrogen liquefaction. Optimising parameters such as particle size and operating cycles can have a significant impact on liquefaction performance. Here, this work reports on a room temperature magnetocaloric refrigeration prototype designed with helium as the heat transfer fluid and packed particle Gd 0.8875 Ce 0.1025 Si 0.84 Cr 0.19 as the refrigerant. The temperature spans and cooling power with three different particle sizes at two different operating cycles were measured. A maximum temperature span of 16.7 K and a maximum cooling power of 8.6 W·kg –1 were obtained. Reduction of performance in the faster cycle was observed in larger particles due to insufficient thermal diffusion time and its implications for cryogenic temperatures are discussed. A numerical model was developed based on the experimentally observed variation of the temperature span and cooling power with particle size and cycle duration. This model was then used to study the competing effects of viscous dissipation and thermal diffusion for different particle sizes and cycle durations.
From ammonium Hexahalorhenates(IV) to nanocrystalline rhenium metal: A combined thermal, diffraction and microscopic analysis
Rhenium metal powder is a material of industrial importance. Several industrial and laboratory methods have been developed for the preparation of ultrafine Re metal powder and nanoparticles. The present study provides a better understanding of the characteristic and formation of Re metal powder from the decomposition of (NH4)2ReX6 salt (X = F, Cl, Br, I) at high temperature in inert atmosphere. Such analysis resulted in the formation of nanocrystalline Re metal as characterized by powder XRD. Williamson-Hall, Scherrer, and Williamson-Smallman methods were employed to study the effect of crystallize size, lattice strain, and dislocation density as analyzed from powder XRD peak broadening. Here, the morphology and composition of the metal were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy.
Phase 1 Study of Low-Dose Fractionated Whole Abdominal Radiation Therapy in Combination With Weekly Paclitaxel for Platinum-Resistant Ovarian Cancer (GCGS-01)
Low-dose fractionated whole abdominal radiation therapy (LDFWART) has synergistic activity with paclitaxel in preclinical models. The aim of this phase 1 trial was to determine the recommended phase 2 dose and preliminary activity of weekly paclitaxel (wP) concurrent with LDFWART in patients with platinum-resistant ovarian cancer (PROC).

Toxicity of L19-Interleukin 2 Combined with Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy: A Phase 1 Study
The immunocytokine L19-IL2 delivers interleukin-2 to the tumor by exploiting the selective L19-dependent binding of extradomain B of fibronectin on tumor blood vessels. In preclinical models, L19-IL2 has been shown to enhance the local and abscopal effects of radiation therapy. The clinical safety of L19-IL2 monotherapy has been established previously. In this study, the safety and tolerability of L19-IL2 after stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) was assessed.

Combining Clinical and Dosimetric Features in a PBS Proton Therapy Cohort to Develop a NTCP Model for Radiation-Induced Optic Neuropathy
Radiation-induced optic neuropathy (RION) is a rare, yet severe complication following radiation therapy for brain, head and neck, or skull-base tumors. Although several risk factors, such as age, metabolic syndrome, and delivered dose, have been identified, we aimed at expanding the understanding of the mechanisms of interplay regarding dosimetry and patient variables leading to the onset of RION with a focus on proton therapy.

PI3Kαδ Inhibitor Combined With Radiation Enhances the Antitumor Immune Effect of Anti-PD1 in a Syngeneic Murine Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Model
The poor response of breast cancer to immune checkpoint blockade might result from low immunogenicity and the immune-suppressive tumor microenvironment. We hypothesized that in situ tumor vaccination via radiation therapy (RT) and suppression of immune tolerance via phosphoinositide 3-kinase δ (PI3Kδ) inhibition would enhance the efficacy of immune checkpoint blockade.
