Constrained Block Nonlinear Neural Dynamical Models

Neural network modules conditioned by known priors can be effectively trained and combined to represent systems with nonlinear dynamics. This work explores a novel formulation for data-efficient learning of deep control-oriented nonlinear dynamical models by embedding local model structure and constraints. The proposed method consists of neural network blocks that represent input, state, and output dynamics with constraints placed on the network weights and system variables. For handling partially observable dynamical systems, we utilize a state observer neural network to estimate the states of the system's latent dynamics. We evaluate the performance of the proposed architecture and training methods on system identification tasks for three nonlinear systems: a continuous stirred tank reactor, a two tank interacting system, and an aerodynamics body. Models optimized with a few thousand system state observations accurately represent system dynamics in open loop simulation over thousands of time steps from a single set of initial conditions. Experimental results demonstrate an order of magnitude reduction in open-loop simulation mean squared error for our constrained, block-structured neural models when compared to traditional unstructured and unconstrained neural network models.

Hybrid prioritized resource allocation in thermally-or power-constrained computing devices

Various embodiments comprise prioritizing frequency allocations in thermally- or power-constrained computing devices. Computer elements may be assigned ‘weights’ based on their priorities. The computer elements with higher weights may receive higher frequency allocations to assure they receive priority in processing more quickly. The computer elements with lower weights may receive lower frequency allocations and suffer a slowdown in their processing. Elements with the same weight may be grouped together for the purpose of frequency allocation.

Magnetically Levitated and Constrained Flywheel Energy Storage System

The concept of using linear induction motors to lift, constrain, accelerate, and decelerate a large-scale flywheel is proposed, and some of the advantages are investigated. Calculations for a Magnetically Levitated Energy Storage System (MLES) are performed that compare a single large scale MLES with a current state of the art flywheel energy storage system in order to show the relative differences and advantages of such a system. The system that is used for comparison is a typical Beacon Power flywheel energy system. This is currently one of the state-of-the-art flywheel energy storage systems and so it can be used to provide a basic data set to compare to an MLES system.

FPGA-based computing system for processing data in size, weight, and power constrained environments

Technologies that are well-suited for use in size, weight, and power (SWAP)-constrained environments are described herein. A host controller dispatches data processing instructions to hardware acceleration engines (HAEs) of one or more field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and further dispatches data transfer instructions to a memory controller, such that the HAEs perform processing operations on data stored in local memory devices of the HAEs in parallel with other data being transferred from external memory devices coupled to the FPGA(s) to the local memory devices.

Domain Adaptive Graph Neural Networks for Constraining Cosmological Parameters Across Multiple Data Sets

State of the art astronomical simulations have provided datasets which enabled the training of novel deep learning techniques for constraining cosmological parameters. However, differences in subgrid physics implementation and numerical approximations among simulation suites lead to differences in simulated datasets, which pose a hard challenge when trying to generalize across diverse data domains and ultimately when applying models to observational data. Recent work reveals deep learning algorithms are able to extract more information from complex cosmological simulations than summary statistics like power spectra. We introduce Domain Adaptive Graph Neural Networks (DA-GNNs), trained on CAMELS data, inspired by CosmoGraphNet (Villanueva-Domingo et al 2023). By utilizing GNNs, we can capitalize on their capacity to capture both astrophysical and topological features of galaxy distributions. Mixing these capabilities with domain adaptation techniques such as Maximum Mean Discrepancy (MMD), which enable extraction of domain-invariant features, our framework demonstrates enhanced accuracy and robustness. We present experimental results, including the alignment of distributions across domains through data visualization. These findings suggest that DA-GNNs are an efficient way of extracting domain independent cosmological information, a vital step toward robust deep learning for real cosmic survey data.

Towards constrained grid-forming control

Grid-forming converters are commonly envisioned to replace conventional synchronous generators as the cornerstone of future power systems. However, compared to synchronous generators, power converters and their power sources (e.g., renewable generation, energy storage) are subject to significant physical constraints (e.g., current limits, modulation limits). Grid-forming controls are commonly designed neglecting these constraints and subsequently augmented with limiters for a subset of constraints. In this work, we propose a systematic approach to constrained grid-forming control of two-level voltage source converters interfacing photovoltaics. We first formulate grid-forming control objectives and constraints of voltage source converters and photovoltaics in a one-step optimal grid-forming control problem. Next, we leverage primal-dual dynamics to obtain a dynamic feedback controller that approximates the solution of the one-step optimal grid-forming control problem. Finally, electromagnetic transient simulations are used to illustrate the results.

Constraining Systematics for Future Sterile Neutrino Analysis at NOvA Experiment

In this article, we report an approach used to constrain the impact of cross-section systematic parameters in the future sterile neutrino analysis at the NOvA experiment. NOvA is a long-baseline neutrino experiment built to investigate the intricate properties of neutrinos, with the principal emphasis on active three-flavor neutrino mixing phenomena. Besides that, NOvA also explores exotic oscillations, including sterile neutrino search. Uncertainties on the neutrino flux, cross-section, and detector systematic parameters significantly contribute, complicating the disentanglement of genuine physics events from background noise. We present the impact of systematic reduction via near detector neutral current sample splitting and its implications on oscillation parameters, leveraging results primarily from Monte Carlo simulations.

Integrated solution techniques for security constrained unit commitment problem

Apparatus and methods are disclosed for solving Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) problems, such as Security Constrained Unit Commitment (SCUC) problems used by power grid authorities to perform day-ahead market clearing. In certain examples, a plurality of threads of a software tool implementing a concurrent optimizer can be executed concurrently and sequentially to generate new solutions to a SCUC problem for an upcoming planning horizon. Data can be shared among the concurrently executing threads, such as intermediate/incumbent solutions and hints regarding the fixing of variables and constraints to reduce the size of the SCUC problem. In some examples, the threads are seeded with historical solutions from prior planning horizons. The software tool can select a best solution from the solutions generated by the threads, and determine dispatch instructions for a device coupled to the power grid for the upcoming planning horizon based at least in part on the selected solution.

Constraining high-energy neutrinos from tidal disruption events with IceCube high-energy starting events

Tidal disruption events (TDEs) have been proposed as candidate sources of high-energy neutrinos. Successful and choked jets, as well as the accretion disk, corona, wind, and outflow regions in a TDE have been examined and shown to produce TeV - PeV neutrinos. In this work, we use the IceCube 12.5 year high energy starting events (HESE) dataset and perform a maximum likelihood analysis to investigate the spatial and temporal correlations between HESE dataset and a selected sample of 89 TDEs. Our results indicate that the currently observed data do not show any significant correlation and hence is consistent with the background only hypothesis. Using this result, we place constraints on the fraction of TDEs harboring intrinsic jets ($f_{\rm jet}$) and the corresponding isotropic-equivalent cosmic ray (CR) energy ($\mathcal{E}_{\rm CR}$). We note that even with limited statistics, we can constrain the parameter space as $\mathcal{E}_{\rm CR} \lesssim 3 \times 10^{53}$ erg for $f_{\rm jet} \gtrsim 0.6$ at more than 90% C.L. Finally, we discuss the theoretical implications of our results and the limits on the all-sky diffuse neutrino flux from TDEs. With more observational data in the electromagnetic band for TDEs and neutrino observations from IceCube and KM3NeT, our analysis can be used to place stringent constraints on physical parameters associated with TDEs.

Constraining GREA, an alternative theory accounting for the present cosmic acceleration

The origin of the Universe's late-time accelerated expansion remains unknown. The General Relativistic Entropic Acceleration (GREA) theory offers a compelling alternative to $Λ$CDM, attributing cosmic acceleration to entropy growth associated with cosmic and black hole horizons, without invoking a cosmological constant. We test GREA against the latest DESI DR2 Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO), multiple Type Ia supernova compilations (Union3, Pantheon$\texttt{+}$, DES-SN5YR), and cosmic microwave background (CMB) distance measurements. While GREA is not nested within $Λ$CDM, it achieves a comparable goodness-of-fit, highlighting its potential as a theoretically motivated framework that circumvents some of the fine-tuning issues of the standard $Λ$CDM cosmology. We find that the best-fit model features a transient phantom crossing at $z \lesssim 2$, with $w_a\equiv \mathrm{d} w(a=1)/\mathrm{d}a \simeq-0.3$, in good agreement with observations. However, its present-day value $w_0\equiv w(z=0)$ is tightly constrained to be $w_0\simeq-1$. Upcoming low-redshift (i.e. $z < 1$) cosmological probes, from both background and perturbations, will offer promising avenues for further exploring the viability of the GREA theory.

Spectra for Toeplitz Operators Associated with a Constrained Subalgebra

A two-point algebra is a set of bounded analytic functions on the unit disk that agree at two distinct points $a, b \in \mathbb{D}$. This algebra serves as a multiplier algebra for the family of Hardy Hilbert spaces $H^2_t := \{ f \in H^2 : tf(b)\}$ where $t \in \mathbb{C} \cup \{\infty\}$. We show that various spectra of certain Toeplitz operators acting on these spaces are connected.

Anomaly detection in PV systems using constrained low-rank and sparse decomposition

PV (photovoltaic) systems, also known as solar panel systems, play an essential role in the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions and the promotion of renewable energy. Through the conversion of sunlight into usable energy, electricity is generated without emitting greenhouse gases and producing pollutants. Notwithstanding the evolutionary significance of PV systems, the occurrence of defects and anomalies in PV systems may result in diminished power output, consequently impeding the efficiency of the systems and potentially resulting in hazards in certain circumstances. Therefore, early detection of faults and anomalies in PV systems is imperative to guarantee the reliability, efficiency, and safety of the systems. In this article, we develop a signal decomposition for the purpose of anomaly detection in PV systems. The proposed methodology is grounded on the concept of low-rank and sparse decomposition, with consideration given to the signs of the decomposed low-rank and sparse components, as well as the smooth variations within and between periods in the mean signals. Through the implementation of Monte Carlo simulations, we showcase the efficacy of our proposed methodology in identifying anomalies of varying durations and magnitudes in PV systems. A case study is employed to validate the proposed methodology in detecting anomalies in real PV systems.

An Empirical Validation of a Constrained Bin Packing Algorithm for a Home Energy Management System

The increasing number of intelligent electrical appliances and home energy management systems provide a big opportunity for demand response services from residential and small commercial buildings to the grid. Simultaneously, direct control of individual devices by utilities can cause communication bottlenecks, as well as coordination and privacy concerns. These challenges can be addressed by combining the constituent devices into a single house battery equivalent for the purposes of demand response, using Minkowski sum and a 2d bin packing problem. However, the well-studied traditional problems have not been tested in a real house, as implementation carries significant challenges of its own. We deploy the packing problem on residential devices in a controllable house. We report the barriers we found, such as charge forecast and scalability of the algorithm, and discuss our solutions. The study serves as an intermediate step between existing theoretical research and possible future steps, such as prototype deployments of systems that provide residential demand response.
