Understanding Radiation Thermometry

This document is a two-part course on the theory and practice of radiation thermometry. Radiation thermometry is the technique for determining the temperature of a surface or a volume by measuring the electromagnetic radiation it emits. This course covers the theory and practice of radiative thermometry and emphasizes the modern application of the field using commercially available electronic detectors and optical components. The course covers the historical development of the field, the fundamental physics of radiative surfaces, along with modern measurement methods and equipment.

NASA Glenn Research Center Solar Cell Experiment Onboard the International Space Station

Accurate air mass zero (AM0) measurement is essential for the evaluation of new photovoltaic (PV) technology for space solar cells. The NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) has flown an experiment designed to measure the electrical performance of several solar cells onboard NASA Goddard Space Flight Center's (GSFC) Robotic Refueling Missions (RRM) Task Board 4 (TB4) on the exterior of the International Space Station (ISS). Four industry and government partners provided advanced PV devices for measurement and orbital environment testing. The experiment was positioned on the exterior of the station for approximately eight months, and was completely self-contained, providing its own power and internal data storage. Several new cell technologies including four-junction (4J) Inverted Metamorphic Multi-junction (IMM) cells were evaluated and the results will be compared to ground-based measurement methods.

Contamination and Surface Preparation Effects on Composite Bonding

Results presented here demonstrate the effect of several prebond surface contaminants (hydrocarbon, machining fluid, latex, silicone, peel ply residue, release film) on bond quality, as measured by fracture toughness and failure modes of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy substrates bonded in secondary and co-bond configurations with paste and film adhesives. Additionally, the capability of various prebond surface property measurement tools to detect contaminants and potentially predict subsequent bond performance of three different adhesives is also shown. Surface measurement methods included water contact angle, Dyne solution wettability, optically stimulated electron emission spectroscopy, surface free energy, inverse gas chromatography, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with chemometrics analysis. Information will also be provided on the effectiveness of mechanical and energetic surface treatments to recover a bondable surface after contamination. The benefits and drawbacks of the various surface analysis tools to detect contaminants and evaluate prebond surfaces after surface treatment were assessed as well as their ability to correlate to bond performance. Surface analysis tools were also evaluated for their potential use as in-line quality control of adhesive bonding parameters in the manufacturing environment.

Advanced Colloids Experiment (Temperature Controlled) - (ACE-T11)

Increment 59-60 Science Symposium presentation of Advanced Colloids Experiment (ACE-T11, Khusid - NJIT (New Jersey Inst. of Technology)) to RPO (Research Program Office). The purpose of this event is for Principal Investigators to present their science objectives, testing approach, and measurement methods to agency scientists, managers, and other investigators. It is often assumed that time-average weightlessness simulated in a clinostat can reduce the effect of gravity on samples. Why not use it for colloids? Low-gravity parabolic flight tests on a non-buoyancy matched suspension demonstrated that time-average weightlessness in a clinostat does not eliminate gravity effect on patterns in colloids formed by an electric field. The long-term microgravity ISS (International Space Station) experiment provides a unique opportunity to reveal the relationship between external forces on the scale of individual particles and the colloid dynamics on the macroscopic scale.

Defining and Measuring Pressure Gain

This presentation describes experimental and computational approaches to measuring pressure gain in the various devices currently under investigation wherein the working fluid undergoes a pressure gain combustion (PGC) process. Pressure gain is essentially a measure of the fluid availability for work or thrust production. The devices covered are Resonant Pulse Combustors, Internal Combustion Wave Rotors, Pulse Detonation Engines, and Rotating Detonation Engines. The approaches to pressure gain measurement differ in each device. However, all of the approaches attempt to address the fundamental challenges of PGC system measurement: the extremely harsh environment which makes instrumentation difficult, and the temporal and spatial non-uniformity associated with the exhausting flow which makes assigning a single value to the total pressure difficult. As part of the two-day 2019 International Constant Volume and Detonative Combustion Workshop, held in conjunction with the 2019 AIAA Propulsion and Energy Forum, this presentation is intended to foster discussion and eventual consensus on acceptable measurement methods.

Quantitative Radiation Thermometry Using Commercially Available High-Speed Video Cameras

In order to understand the risk posed to astronauts by electric arc-generated particles, high-speed, high-resolution, quantitative thermal imaging was needed. The measurement requirements appeared to be beyond the capabilities of commercial thermal imaging systems, but the particles were known to have a significant amount of emission in the visible spectrum. This led to the use of commercially available, high-speed video cameras as imaging radiometers. Measured particle temperatures were consistent with predictions and other measurement data. The optical temperature measurement method, results, and conclusions are presented, along with recommendations for further work.
