Post-mission data analysis of Surveyor mission chemical data

Prime data from chemical analysis experiments, of Surveyor 5, 6, and 7 are critically examined and analyzed. This and associated laboratory work has given final chemical composition results for the lunar regolith at three locations. The conclusions made on the basis of the preliminary examinations of the data are confirmed and extended.

Data correlation and analysis of arc tunnel and wind tunnel tests of RSI joints and gaps. Volume 2: Data base

Wind tunnel tests were conducted to determine the aerodynamic heating created by gaps in the reusable surface insulation (RSI) thermal protection system (TPS) for the space shuttle. The effects of various parameters of the RSI on convective heating characteristics are described. The wind tunnel tests provided a data base for accurate assessment of gap heating. Analysis and correlation of the data provide methods for predicting heating in the RSI gaps on the space shuttle.

Evaluation of ERTS-1 data for acquiring land use data of northern Megalopolis

State planners are increasingly becoming interested in ERTS as a possible method for acquiring land use data. An important consideration to them is whether ERTS can provide such data at a savings in both time and money over alternative systems. A preliminary evaluation of ERTS as a planning tool is given.

Apollo data analysis experiment S-211. Low brightness image data analysis

The scientific analyses of photographic data in astronomy obtained by the Apollo Orbital Science Photographic Team during Apollo flights 14 through 17 are described. Some of the tasks are the collection and correlation of Quick-Look listings, working prints for further study, the generation of post-mission reports, and project reports. Postflight calibrations of the flight photographic systems are carried out, and lens vignetting effects are corrected. The data handling is described and includes photodigitization of photographic scenes, calibrated step-wedges, and vignetting patterns, which are followed by computer program processing of the film density readings.

Analysis of Skylab MSS data, and calibration of thermal data over Lake Monroe, Indiana

The author has identified the following significant results. The SL/4-S192 data over northern Indiana looks good. The thermal band looks very encouraging. The preliminary analysis indicates so far that it will be difficult to distinguish some land use classes because of the lack of vegetation. Preliminary analysis of the thermal band in particular indicates that there appears to be a correlation of the hot spots in the data over the Ft. Wayne, Indiana area and its industrial centers.

Meteorological data collection via ERTS-A data retransmission facilities

The author has identified the following significant results. Two meteorological data acquisition systems were built to support hydrometeorological programs related to flow forecasting. Data errors were detected in the stream level formation; these errors were caused by sensor difficulties.

Application of satellite data and LARS's data processing techniques to mapping vegetation of the Dismal Swamp

The feasibility of using digital satellite imagery and automatic data processing techniques as a means of mapping swamp forest vegetation was considered, using multispectral scanner data acquired by the LANDSAT-1 satellite. The site for this investigation was the Dismal Swamp, a 210,000 acre swamp forest located south of Suffolk, Va. on the Virginia-North Carolina border. Two basic classification strategies were employed. The initial classification utilized unsupervised techniques which produced a map of the swamp indicating the distribution of thirteen forest spectral classes. These classes were later combined into three informational categories: Atlantic white cedar (Chamaecyparis thyoides), Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda), and deciduous forest. The subsequent classification employed supervised techniques which mapped Atlantic white cedar, Loblolly pine, deciduous forest, water and agriculture within the study site. A classification accuracy of 82.5% was produced by unsupervised techniques compared with 89% accuracy using supervised techniques.

A computer software system for integration and analysis of grid-based remote sensing data with other natural resource data. Remote Sensing Project

A computer-based information system is described designed to assist in the integration of commonly available spatial data for regional planning and resource analysis. The Resource Analysis Program (RAP) provides a variety of analytical and mapping phases for single factor or multi-factor analyses. The unique analytical and graphic capabilities of RAP are demonstrated with a study conducted in Windsor Township, Eaton County, Michigan. Soil, land cover/use, topographic and geological maps were used as a data base to develope an eleven map portfolio. The major themes of the portfolio are land cover/use, non-point water pollution, waste disposal, and ground water recharge.

Correlation of AH-1G helicopter flight vibration data and tailboom static test data with NASTRAN analytical results

Level flight airframe vibration at main rotor excitation frequencies was calculated. A NASTRAN tailboom analysis was compared with test data for evaluation of methods used to determine effective skin in a semimonocoque sheet-stringer structure. The flight vibration correlation involved comparison of level flight vibration for two helicopter configurations: clean wing, at light gross weight and wing stores at heavy gross weight. In the tailboom correlation, deflections and internal loads were compared using static test data and a NASTRAN analysis. An iterative procedure was used to determine the amount of effective skin of buckled panels under compression load.

Evaluation of DSN data processing with 7200-b/s GCF high-speed data interfaces

Test results confirm that the Deep Space Station (DSS) and Network Operations Control Center (NOCC) processing of telemetry, command, radio metric, and monitor data with the existing DSN Mark III-75 configuration will be unaffected by the recent change of the Ground Communications Facility (GCF) high-speed data subsystem to a clock rate of 7,200 bits per second.

A compilation of spacecraft loads data from four Titan Centaur Launch Vehicle flights. Volume 1: Acoustics data

The payloads carried by the first four Titan Centaur launch vehicle flights were, a Viking spacecraft dynamic simulator, the Helios A spacecraft, and the two Viking spacecraft. Dynamic loads data were accumulated from these four flights for application to the Viking spacecraft. The accoustics data include time histories and spectral analysis plots of accoustic pressure measurements made in the Centaur and payload compartment during launch flight. Summary plots are presented to show composite spectra for liftoff and Mach 1/Max Q periods of flight.

The Nimbus 6 data catalog. Volume 6: Data orbits 4339 through 5155

Satellite operations from launch through 14 July (orbit 425) consisted of engineering evaluation of all spacecraft systems. As a result of that effort, data reception, accountability and processing were intermittent during that period. During orbit 4905 (12 June), Nimbus 6 successfully completed one year operations. A summary of the documentation for each Nimbus 6 Data Catalog volume is presented. The pitch of the Nimbus 6 satellite has been made to alternate between +2.0 degrees, +0.6 degrees, and 0.0 degrees since launch. A positive pitch angle of 0.6 degrees moves the nadir-looking position 11.5 kilometers ahead of the subsatellite point. A positive pitch angle of 2.0 degrees moves the nadir-looking position 38.3 kilometers ahead of the subsatellite point. At these pitch angles, a scanner-type instrument no longer scans the earth along a great circle arc through the subpoint, but scans along the small circle formed by the intersection of the scan plane with the earth. Since the plane of the small circle is tilted with respect to the nominal scan plane, points on the arc are displaced farther from the great circle as the scan angle increases. As noted above, a pitch angle of 0.6 degrees causes a displacement of 11.5 kilometers at nadir, but when the scanner turns 45 degrees away from nadir the displacement increases slightly to 12.8 kilometers. Similarly, for a 2.0 degree pitch the displacement is 38.3 kilometers at nadir and increases to 42.6 kilometers at a 45 degree scan angle. Thus, although the instrument records in lines normal to the orbit plane (in the absence of yaw) the perpendicular displacement from the perfect-attitude scan line is not uniform across the scan line.
