Extension and Validation of NEMA-Style Dual-Ring Controller in SUMO

Until recently, SUMO users could not model the behavior of a ring-and-barrier traffic signal via existing signal types, which left North American SUMO users without the direct ability to capture traffic dynamics of their local networks. This work presents the methods, implementation overview, and validation of a 'dual-ring' NEMA style traffic controller which has recently been added to the main SUMO code base. A brief explanation of the 'dual-ring' implementation is also provided as context for those new to this type of traffic controller. The foundation for this work was presented at the SUMO User Conference 2021 by researchers at the US Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory, but was not integrated into SUMO code base at the time. Following the initial inclusion of the controller to SUMO, the authors began validation of the SUMO controller against an Econolite software-in-the-loop (SIL) traffic signal controller configured with actual setup parameters from controllers in a real-world three-intersection corridor in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA. This paper documents the process of adding new features to the controller code as well as validating their implementation through simulation-based and automated grey-box testing is presented in this paper. Key features such as fully-actuated operation, various timing offset plans, proper next-phase fit algorithms and more, have been added and validated against this SIL system. Though not an exhaustive demonstration of features, this work is intended make more users aware of this extension of SUMO capabilities.

Design of a High Flux Beam Characterization Device for Falling Particle Receivers

This paper outlines the design and error analysis for a flux characterization device (i.e. flux wand) which traverses the aperture of a falling particle receiver cavity providing the incident power measurement needed for the calculation of receiver efficiency without significantly disrupting receiver output. The design features a linear actuator, water cooled extension arm, and refractory bar. The refractory bar/flux wand is a diffusely reflective surface which reflects light as it is translated across the receiver aperture to provide a light intensity distribution that is correlated to a measured flux. The component sizing, constrained by a typical 30 frame per second camera and a 4-point average of the measured reflectance, is presented. Simulation reveals the error that results from a 5% variation in flux wand reflectance is within 4% of the true value.

Experimental Operation of a Prototype 750C Advanced Chloride Molten Salt Bellows Valve

To achieve DOE 2030 SunShot targets that reduce the cost of liquid-based solar by an additional 40% to 70% beyond 2018 costs, a more reliable, highly manufacturable flow valve, capable of achieving operational temperatures of >700°C is required [1]. This paper investigates the development of an innovative high-temperature chloride molten salt valve, with operation up to 750°C. This valve is intended to be employed within Gen 3 CSP liquid-based thermal energy storage (TES) systems as well as Gen 4 modular salt reactor (MSR) technologies. This work details the general design and flow testing of a bellows-seal flow control valve (FCV). This design includes an integrated closed-loop thermal control system to ensure robust design for freeze-thaw cycles. The self-contained thermal management STM system, is unique in the salt valve industry since it is an integrated solution to provide a consistent, repeatable alternative to typical heat tracing. Additionally, the design includes the employment of a novel heat pipe valve stem to facilitate enhanced passive thermal management into the valve assembly. This valve stem heat pipe is designed to facilitate natural circulation within the bonnet to ensure robust operation, during both nominal and transient thermal operation. The valve body and trim will be designed using SS316H, consistent with Flowserve Corporation’s existing product base and is code qualified but will utilize clad material for materials corrosion, manufacturing cost reduction and compatibility to ensure design flexibility. A test campaign was performed in this investigation utilizing a novel 750°C ternary chloride (20%NaCl/40%MgCl2/40%KCl by mol. wt. %) molten salt flow loop. A discussion about the design and installation of the valves within this test bed is provided for this investigation. Valve test results from this study assessed Cv curves as well as multiple actuator cycles, under varying thermodynamic and operational mode conditions, which would be characteristic within a commercial molten salt facility. The results indicate nominal operation for the baseline design, though improved performance and reliability is expected with the full designed FCV.

Performance of a Prototype Heliostat Having a Twisting Mechanism to Maintain Focus Throughout the Day

A prototype heliostat has been designed and built with a rectangular reflector whose shape is altered automatically through the day, to maximize concentration at the receiver. The shape changes needed to form solar disc images, which give the highest possible concentration, can be realized by twisting the reflector from its corners, provided that a target-oriented, dual-axis mount is used. Then a cam mechanism connected to the second (cross) axis drive, turning with the angle of incident sunlight, may be used to twist the reflector as needed. Our prototype reflector comprises a single glass mirror, 2.4 m x 3.3 m, attached to a steel frame. Four diagonal back struts extend from the central mechanism out to the rectangular frame corners. The glass mirror of the prototype is attached to the steel frame by 58 screw actuators. Before twisting the frame, the glass shape is adjusted to the biconic shape needed to form a 1 m diameter disc image on a 113 m distant target when sunlight is incident at 60°. To form disc images over the full range of angles of incidence from 0° (normal incidence) to 70°, the struts push the corners up and down by up to 17 mm. A reflectometry metrology system has been used to set the 58 adjustment screws for the initial shape to an accuracy of ≤ 0.6 mrad, and to measure the accuracy of the different twisted shapes. The prototype will be tested at NSTTF early next year.

Automation of Nanoparticle Synthesis Processes in a Plasma Environment Using LabVIEW

This work presents an automated control system for the synthesis of nanomaterials by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), implemented using the LabVIEW software environment. The main objective of the study is to develop an integrated hardware-software platform that enables sequential control of the key stages of the PECVD process, including vacuum chamber preparation, pressure monitoring, working gas supply, plasma ignition, power matching, cyclic nanomaterial growth, and optical monitoring of nanoparticles in the plasma environment. The use of LabVIEW made it possible to integrate actuator control, experimental parameter acquisition, and realtime process visualization within a single automated system. The automated cycle begins with evacuation of the reaction chamber to a predefined base pressure. Transition to the next stage is permitted only after the specified pressure threshold has been reached, ensuring reproducible initial conditions for each experiment. The program then controls the supply of the working gas through mass flow controllers (MFCs). In this work, two gas-flow control modes were considered: analog control using a 0-5 V voltage signal and digital communication via RS-232 interface. It was shown that the analog approach requires accurate scaling of the control voltage, since applying 5 V corresponds to full-scale opening of the controller and results in the maximum gas flow. In contrast, the RS232 interface enables the gas flow rate to be specified directly in sccm, improving the accuracy, flexibility, and convenience of gas-environment control. After pressure stabilization, LabVIEW initiates RF plasma ignition and executes the RF matching algorithm aimed at minimizing reflected power and improving the stability of the plasma process. A separate software module implements the cyclic nanomaterial growth mode, in which the plasma-on time, plasma duration, and total number of synthesis cycles are predefined. This approach makes it possible to control material accumulation on the substrate and to correlate the process parameters with the morphological characteristics of the resulting nanostructures. The final module of the system is designed for optical monitoring of the nanoparticle cloud density in dusty plasma. For this purpose, the change in the intensity of laser radiation passing through the plasma region is recorded using a photodetector and a Keithley 2401 measuring unit connected to LabVIEW via RS-232 interface. The difference between the initial and modified optical signal intensity is used as a diagnostic parameter characterizing the formation and temporal evolution of nanoparticles. The developed system demonstrates that LabVIEW can be effectively applied not only for the automation of individual instruments, but also for the implementation of a complete digital control cycle for PECVD-based nanomaterial synthesis.

Shape memory embolectomy devices and systems

An embolectomy device comprised of an expansion unit and a support unit is disclosed. The expansion unit can be actuated in response to one or more external stimuli, and the support unit, located proximately to the expansion unit, provides a force to hold the expansion unit in place and to further induce the expansion unit's radial expansion. The radial expansion of the expansion unit causes the expansion unit to physically contact a blood clot, enabling the blood clot to be removed. In some embodiments, the expansion unit can be fabricated from a shape memory polymer foam. In some embodiments the support unit can be fabricated from any elastic material including, without limitation, shape memory alloys.

Making Better Use of On-Site PV Generation: Direct Distribution of DC Power in Buildings

With the increasing availability of Direct Current (DC) power from on-site solar systems, building designers now have the option of direct distribution of DC power to energy storage systems and end-use loads such as lighting, electronics, and motors. Research shows that direct-DC can reduce building distribution losses by 5-15%, while improving power reliability. A readily available way to implement direct-DC distribution is Power over Ethernet (PoE), which typically has provided low-voltage DC to power office equipment such as WiFi access points. With recent updates to the PoE standard, equipment such as network-controlled LED lighting, thin client and computer workstations, HVAC controllers, fans, motors, and actuators can now be powered by PoE and are commercially available. This paper presents results from a DOE-funded project that is demonstrating PoE technologies and describes a DC modeling and design tool that is intended to help building designers properly evaluate and design DC distribution systems in buildings. The tool provides designers of DC power systems with estimates of both power system losses and indirect effects on building heating and cooling. The results of this research demonstrate that the design methods and products are available to implement DC power in buildings today.

On Information Transfer in Dynamical Systems with applications in Control of Non-equilibrium Dynamics

In this paper we develop the concept of information transfer between the Borel-measurable sets for a dynamical system described by a measurable space and a non-singular transformation. The concept is based on how Shannon entropy is transferred between the measurable sets, as the dynamical system evolves. We show that the proposed definition of information transfer satisfies the usual notions of information transfer and causality, namely, zero transfer and transfer asymmetry. Furthermore, we show how the information transfer measure can be used to characterize ergodicity and mixing in dynamical systems. We also develop the computational methods for information transfer computation and apply the framework for optimal placements of actuators and sensors for control of non-equilibrium dynamics.

The Need for a Maximum Intensity Accident in ANS 8-Series Standards

Y-12 has installed one CAAS system under the ANS 8.3 framework as a safety significant system, and is in the process of designing, installing, and qualifying another. As a safety significant system, the Y-12 CAAS is required to demonstrate that it is able to perform its function and actuate an alarm when exposed to the radiation from both a Minimum Accident of Concern and a maximum intensity accident. The ANS 8-series standards do not present a maximum accident to be considered, nor do they specify dose rate tolerance requirements, leading CAAS vendors to potentially use other standards that provide inadequate criteria. A maximum intensity accident is proposed, and the effects of this accident on CAAS analysis and the vendor’s equipment qualification are discussed

Control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) with remote disconnect mechanism

The drive assembly includes annular drive magnets extending around a top end of a drive shaft and annular drive coils extending around the drive magnets, separated by a pressure boundary. A latch assembly is coupled to the drive magnets and engages with the drive shaft in response to actuation of the drive assembly.
