The Structural Heat Intercept, Insulation, and Vibration Evaluation Rig (SHIIVER) is planning to demonstrate the performance benefits of using boil-off to reduce the heat load on various upper stage structural members by using the boil-off vapor to intercept some of the heat load on the structures. A first order simplified analytical model was constructed in order to understand sensitivity of various parameters to performance as well as to understand the theoretical maximum performance of the vapor cooling of a thin-walled cylindrical structure. Constant fluid properties and a temperature dependent thermal conductivity of the structure material were assumed. The model showed that vapor cooling of an aluminum cylindrical structure with hydrogen can reduce the heat load along the cylinder by as much as 70%. Also, cooling a portion of the cylinder is quite effective in comparison with cooling it entirely.
A sample of galaxy candiidates selected from the IRAS Point Source Catalog was observed in the 21cm line of neutral hydrogen in order to identify galaxies and measure redshifts.

Study of concepts for large space structures will interest those designing scaffolding, radio towers, rescue equipment, and prefabricated shelters. Double-fold, double-cell module was selected for further design and for zero gravity testing. Concept is viable for deployment by humans outside space vehicle as well as by remotely operated manipulator.
A large structural model of a reentry vehicle has been built incorporating design concepts applicable to a radiation-cooled vehicle. Thermal-stress alleviating features of the model are discussed. Environmental tests on the model include approximately 100 cycles of loading at room temperature and 33 cycles of combined loading and-heating up to temperatures of 1,6000 F. Measured temperatures are shown for typical parts of the model. Comparisons are made between experimental and calculated deflections and strains. The structure successfully survived the heating and loading environments.
The real benefit of structural optimization techniques is in the application of these techniques to large structures such as full vehicles or full aircraft. For these structures, however, the sequential computer's time and memory requirements prohibit the solutions. With the rapid development of parallel computers, parallel processing of large scale structural optimization problems is achievable. In this paper we discuss the parallel processing of structural optimization problems with parallel structural analysis. Two different types of interface between the optimization and analysis routines are developed and tested.
Report describes experiments in use of six-input/six-output multivariable adaptive control system to suppress vibrations in complicated flexible structure. Represents significant upgrade relative to two-input/two-output system, yielding significant improvement in spatial controllability and effective damping of largest set of modes. Structure exhibits low modal frequencies and complicated dynamics like those of large structures in outer space. Conclusions drawn from research relevant to such applications as active suppression of wind and earthquake vibrations in tall buildings and other large terrestrial structures.
Multiple-boundary-condition testing method technique to improve analysis of vibrations in large structures. Conceived for vibrational testing, in terrestrial environment, of large, complicated three-dimensional structures intended for use in outer space. Objective of such testing, to identify parameters of mathematical models used to predict vibrations of such structures in absence of gravitation and air. Structure supported and/or restrained at several positions; excited at desired vibrational frequencies, and vibrations measured to determine characteristics of vibrational modes. Potential terrestrial uses in testing and evaluation of dynamics of towers and offshore structures and safety of large buildings in Earthquakes.
