Data-driven enhancement of coherent structure-based models for predicting instantaneous wall turbulence

Predictions of the spatial representation of instantaneous wall-bounded flows, via coherent structure-based models, are highly sensitive to the geometry of the representative structures employed by them. In this study, we propose a methodology to extract the three-dimensional (3-D) geometry of the statistically significant eddies from multi-point wall-turbulence datasets, for direct implementation into these models to improve their predictions. The methodology is employed here for reconstructing a 3-D statistical picture of the inertial wall coherent turbulence for all canonical wall-bounded flows, across a decade of friction Reynolds number (Re T ). These structures are responsible for the Re T -dependence of the skin-friction drag and also facilitate the inner-outer interactions, making them key targets of structure-based models. The empirical analysis brings out the geometric self-similarity of the large-scale wall-coherent motions and also suggests the hairpin packet as the representative flow structure for all wall-bounded flows, thereby aligning with the framework on which the attached eddy model (AEM) is based. The same framework is extended here to also model the very-large-scaled motions, with a consideration of their differences in internal versus external flows. Implementation of the empirically-obtained geometric scalings for these large structures into the AEM is shown to enhance the instantaneous flow predictions for all three velocity components. Finally, an active flow control system driven by the same geometric scalings is conceptualized, towards favourably altering the influence of the wall coherent motions on the skin-friction drag.

A data driven control strategy for optimal and flexible operation of absorption systems; Stratégie de régulation fondée sur les données pour un fonctionnement optimal et flexible des systèmes à absorption

A novel control strategy for vapor absorption systems with experimental validation is presented. Statistical methods are used to integrate a detailed thermodynamic model and system-specific characteristics into a model based control algorithm. This allows for continuously optimized operation as well as fast response to variations in operating conditions. Autonomous controller performance was tested experimentally for response to changes in heat sink and evaporator temperatures. Continuous turndown with fast response to capacity demand changes, in contrast to suboptimal on/off control, was demonstrated. The thermal compressor concept was employed to develop the variable speed thermal compressor module, with aspects specific to absorption heat pumps, also facilitating cross-applicability of vapor compression system control strategies. Our results of this study enable further development and optimization of absorption systems for a wide range of applications.

Data-driven acceleration of thermal radiation transfer calculations with the dynamic mode decomposition and a sequential singular value decomposition

In this work, we present a method for accelerating discrete ordinates radiative transfer calculations for radiative transfer. Our method works with nonlinear positivity fixes, in contrast to most acceleration schemes. The method is based on the dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) and using a sequence of rank-one updates to compute the singular value decomposition needed for DMD. Using a sequential method allows us to automatically determine the number of solution vectors to include in the DMD acceleration. We present results for slab geometry discrete ordinates calculations with the standard temperature linearization. Compared with positive source iteration, our results demonstrate that our acceleration method reduces the number of transport sweeps required to solve the problem by a factor of about 3 on a standard diffusive Marshak wave problem, a factor of several thousand on a cooling problem where the effective scattering ratio approaches unity, and a factor of 20 improvement in a realistic, multimaterial radiating shock problem.

Performance evaluation of automated data-driven feature extraction and selection methods for practical and scalable building energy consumption prediction models

Here, this study quantifies the impact of automated feature engineering methods (feature extraction and selection) on the quality and accuracy of machine learning models that predict building energy consumption. The case study compares model performance for three main scenarios: baseline (no feature extraction and selection), feature extraction only, and feature extraction combined with feature selection (filter and/or wrapper methods) for fully trained machine learning models for 200 metered/sub-metered energy measurements across 118 real buildings. For consistency, the same machine learning model architecture (a black box deep learning neural network with probabilistic forecast output) was used for all scenarios. Based on results, all feature engineering methods provided noticeable prediction accuracy improvements (e.g., 29%-68% median prediction improvement) compared to baseline scenarios. However, in this application, feature selection methods provide little practical value due to their limited performance gains and high computational cost. Smarter algorithm development supported by better computational environments will be needed before feature selection methods can reliably and efficiently improve predictive model performance.
