Audio-Visual Situational Awareness for General Aviation Pilots

Weather is one of the major causes of general aviation accidents. Researchers are addressing this problem from various perspectives including improving meteorological forecasting techniques, collecting additional weather data automatically via on-board sensors and "flight" modems, and improving weather data dissemination and presentation. We approach the problem from the improved presentation perspective and propose weather visualization and interaction methods tailored for general aviation pilots. Our system, Aviation Weather Data Visualization Environment (AWE), utilizes information visualization techniques, a direct manipulation graphical interface, and a speech-based interface to improve a pilot's situational awareness of relevant weather data. The system design is based on a user study and feedback from pilots.

The human oculomotor response to simultaneous visual and physical movements at two different frequencies

In order to investigate interactions in the visual and vestibular systems' oculomotor response to linear movement, we developed a two-frequency stimulation technique. Thirteen subjects lay on their backs and were oscillated sinusoidally along their z-axes at between 0.31 and 0.81 Hz. During the oscillation subjects viewed a large, high-contrast, visual pattern oscillating in the same direction as the physical motion but at a different, non-harmonically related frequency. The evoked eye movements were measured by video-oculography and spectrally analysed. We found significant signal level at the sum and difference frequencies as well as at other frequencies not present in either stimulus. The emergence of new frequencies indicates non-linear processing consistent with an agreement-detector system that have previously proposed.

Application of visual psychophysics to the design of video systems for use in space

A series of two-alternative forced choice experiments was conducted to compare the sharpness of televised moving images sampled using cardinal or diagonal patterns with reference images of varying resolution. The results indicate that both image sampling and resolution orientation play an important role in determining apparent sharpness of the images. If an image has better cardinal than diagonal resolution, the apparent sharpness is significantly greater. Thus, if the polar distribution of resolution is limited by the sampling process, diagonal sampling can be expected to yield a sharper image than cardinal sampling with the same number of pixels.

Geophysical data analysis and visualization using the Grid Analysis and Display System

Several problems posed by the rapidly growing volume of geophysical data are described, and a selected set of existing solutions to these problems is outlined. A recently developed desktop software tool called the Grid Analysis and Display System (GrADS) is presented. The GrADS' user interface is a natural extension of the standard procedures scientists apply to their geophysical data analysis problems. The basic GrADS operations have defaults that naturally map to data analysis actions, and there is a programmable interface for customizing data access and manipulation. The fundamental concept of the GrADS' dimension environment, which defines both the space in which the geophysical data reside and the 'slice' of data which is being analyzed at a given time, is expressed The GrADS' data storage and access model is described. An argument is made in favor of describable data formats rather than standard data formats. The manner in which GrADS users may perform operations on their data and display the results is also described. It is argued that two-dimensional graphics provides a powerful quantitative data analysis tool whose value is underestimated in the current development environment which emphasizes three dimensional structure modeling.

Application of Bacteriorhodopsin Films in an Adaptive-Focusing Schlieren System

The photochromic property of bacteriorhodopsin films is exploited in the application of a focusing schlieren optical system for the visualization of optical phase information. By encoding an image on the film with light of one wavelength and reading out with a different wavelength, the readout beam can effectively see the photographic negative of the original image. The potential advantage of this system over previous focusing schlieren systems is that the updatable nature of the bacteriorhodopsin film allows system adaptation. I discuss two image encoding and readout techniques for the bacteriorhodopsin and use film transmission characteristics to choose the more appropriate method. I demonstrate the system principle with experimental results using argon-ion and He-Cd lasers as the two light sources of different wavelengths, and I discuss current limitations to implementation with a white-light source.

System and method for image mapping and visual attention

A method is described for mapping dense sensory data to a Sensory Ego Sphere (SES). Methods are also described for finding and ranking areas of interest in the images that form a complete visual scene on an SES. Further, attentional processing of image data is best done by performing attentional processing on individual full-size images from the image sequence, mapping each attentional location to the nearest node, and then summing attentional locations at each node.

Reflectance Spectra of Titan Tholins at Cryogenic Temperatures and Implications for Compositional Interpretation of Red Objects in the Outer Solar System

We report the visual and near-infrared (0.4-2.5 micron) laboratory bi-directional reflectance of Titan tholin at cryogenic temperatures (approx. 100-300 K). When compared with room temperature measurements, the visual and near-infrared color of Titan tholin becomes slightly redder by approx. 5% at low temperatures in the 0.4-1.3 micron region. We estimate the influence of these colr changes on the interpretation of the Centaur Pholus and find that the modest color changes will not significantly alter existing interpretations.

Metrology-based Techniques for Optical System Alignment for the OSIRIS-Rx Visual and InfraRed Spectrometer

The alignment, integration, and test group (AI&T) in the optics branch at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) specializes in optical and opto-mechanical alignment and metrology for project ranging from building and testing instrument such as spectrometers and cameras to larger structures such as telescopes to large volume metrology and alignment at the observatory level for spacecraft payloads. One of the projects that involved the support of the AI&T group was the OSIRIS-Rex Visual and Infra-Red Spectrometer (OVIRS) for the Origins-Spectral Interpretation-Resource Identification-Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-Rex) mission. The purpose of this report is to outline the tools, methods, and approaches to metrology utilized by the AI&T group and how they were applied specifically to the optical alignment of the elements on OVIRS during the ambient I&T phase.

Flight Test Evaluation of an Unmanned Aircraft System Traffic Management (UTM) Concept for Multiple Beyond-Visual-Line-of-Sight Operations

This study evaluates a traffic management concept designed to enable simultaneous operations of multiple small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) in the national airspace system (NAS). A five-day flight-test activity is described that examined the feasibility of operating multiple UAS beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) of their respective operators in the same airspace. Over the five-day campaign, three groups of five flight crews operated a total of eleven different aircraft. Each group participated in four flight scenarios involving five simultaneous missions. Each vehicle was operated BVLOS up to 1.5 miles from the pilot in command. Findings and recommendations are presented to support the feasibility and safety of routine BVLOS operations for small UAS.

Intelligent Monitoring Systems and Advanced Well Integrity and Mitigation

Long-term seismic monitoring of carbon capture and storage projects is needed to verify that the injected gas is safely stored in the subsurface until permanence can be assured. Conventional surface seismic monitoring techniques are usually expensive, require highly invasive surface operations, and need significant time investments on the part of personnel for both the field effort and processing the acquired data. For these reasons, permanent reservoir monitoring technologies are preferred, as they can offer a cost-effective solution for long-term monitoring. As part of the monitoring program of the Archer Daniels Midland’s large-scale injection of CO 2 in Decatur, Illinois, USA, a continuous seismic monitoring array was installed using a combination of surface orbital vibrator (SOV) sources and fiber-optic cables for distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) acquisition with the objective to build a continuous monitoring array. The aim of the presented project was to build a monitoring array and platform that integrates real-time seismic data with conventional data streams and provides continuous data analysis using dynamic computational models to deliver a comprehensive real-time assessment of subsurface conditions. It is in this context that the Intelligent Monitoring Systems and Advanced Well Integrity and Mitigation project was proposed with the objective to develop an integrated architecture that utilizes a permanent seismic monitoring network, combines the real-time geophysical and process data with reservoir flow and geomechanical models to create a comprehensive monitoring, visualization, and control system that delivers critical information for process surveillance and optimization.

Quantitative simulation of extraterrestrial engineering devices

This is a multicomponent, multidisciplinary project whose overall objective is to build an integrated database, simulation, visualization, and optimization system for the proposed oxygen manufacturing plant on Mars. Specifically, the system allows users to enter physical description, engineering, and connectivity data through a uniform, user-friendly interface and stores the data in formats compatible with other software also developed as part of this project. These latter components include: (1) programs to simulate the behavior of various parts of the plant in Martian conditions; (2) an animation program which, in different modes, provides visual feedback to designers and researchers about the location of and temperature distribution among components as well as heat, mass, and data flow through the plant as it operates in different scenarios; (3) a control program to investigate the stability and response of the system under different disturbance conditions; and (4) an optimization program to maximize or minimize various criteria as the system evolves into its final design. All components of the system are interconnected so that changes entered through one component are reflected in the others.

Operando X-Ray Tomography Imaging of Solid-State Electrolyte Response to Li Evolution under Realistic Operating Conditions

Solid-state Li-ion conductors are a next-generation battery technology that are particularly promising for electric vehicles, offering the capacitive benefits of Li metal anodes with nonflammable electrolytes. Microstructural evolution in these solid-state batteries, especially the Li anode, requires deeper understanding of the conditions under which certain undesired behaviors are more likely to occur. This study utilizes operando X-ray computed tomography to visualize the behavior of lithium in response to device operation, considering variables that are relevant to a realistic battery: stack pressure, microscale defects such as pores, and temperature. This work demonstrates that experimental and operational conditions, especially temperature, affect the fundamental driving forces of realistic solid electrolyte systems and provides visual insight into possible mechanisms of Li migration. In particular, the effect of these variables on Li propagation from the anode through pre-existing defects and Li nucleation within the imperfectly electron-insulating electrolyte is highlighted.
