Planned flight test of a mercury ion auxiliary propulsion system. I - Objectives, systems descriptions, and mission operations

A planned flight test of an 8-cm diameter, electron-bombardment mercury ion thruster system is described. The primary objective of the test is to flight qualify the 5 mN thruster system for auxiliary propulsion applications. A seven year north-south stationkeeping mission was selected as the basis for the flight test operating profile. The flight test, which will employ two thruster systems, will also generate thruster system space performance data, measure thruster-spacecraft interactions, and demonstrate thruster operation in a number of operating modes. The flight test is designated as SAMSO-601 and will be flown aboard the Shuttle-launched Air Force Space Test Program P80-1 satellite in 1981. The spacecraft will be 3-axis stabilized in its final 740 km circular orbit, which will have an inclination of at least 73 degrees. The spacecraft design lifetime is three years.

Red-emitting Ga/As,P///In,Ga/P heterojunction lasers

The paper describes in detail the properties of vapor-grown double-heterojunction lasers of Ga(As,P)/(In,Ga)P with room-temperature threshold current densities as low as 3400 A/sq cm at 7000 A and 6600 A/sq cm at 6800 A. These thresholds are three to eight times smaller than those of (Al,Ga)As lasers in this wavelength range due to the shorter-wavelength direct-indirect transition in Ga(As,P). The optical and electrical characteristics of the Ga(As,P)/(In,Ga)P lasers are found to be similar to those of (Al,Ga)As, with fundamental transverse-mode operation to 70 C, and spontaneous carrier lifetimes between 5 and 8 nsec typically observed at low current densities.

The ISEE 1 and 2 Medium Energy Particles Experiment

The Medium Energy Particles Experiment (MEPE) on board ISEE 1 and 2 consists of the WIM instrument on ISEE 1 and the KED instrument on ISEE 2. Both instruments employ solid-state detectors and magnetic analysis to measure the angular, energy, and intensity distributions of protons (ions) above 24 keV and electrons above 20 keV. The WIM instrument also includes a composition measurement employing Delta E-by-E and time-of-flight techniques. Three-parameter analysis is performed above 250 keV/nucleon, and single parameter analysis is performed above 125 keV/nucleon for helium through oxygen. Three-dimensional angular distributions are obtained through the use of a scan platform in the WIM instrument and multiple detector heads in the KED instrument. A variety of operational modes are used to optimize data collection from both instruments. Resolutions up to 128 channels in energy, 192 samples over the unit sphere in angle, and 0.095 sec in time are available.

Benefits of solar/fossil hybrid gas turbine systems

The potential benefits of solar/fossil hybrid gas turbine power systems were assessed. Both retrofit and new systems were considered from the aspects of; cost of electricity, fuel conservation, operational mode, technology requirements, and fuels flexibility. Hybrid retrofit (repowering) of existing combustion (simple Brayton cycle) turbines can provide near-term fuel savings and solar experience, while new and advanced recuperated or combined cycle systems may be an attractive fuel saving and economically competitive vehicle to transition from today's gas and oil-fired powerplants to other more abundant fuels.

Multi-axis hand controller for the shuttle remote manipulator system

The Shuttle Remote Manipulator System, has a articulated arm of 50 ft. length with six motor-driven joints. The basic purpose is to establish physical contact with various space hardware items and maneuver these to the desired position and attitude with respect to the Orbiter, nulling out relative velocities and stabilizing the free-body system by managing residual energies. The normal operating mode is resolved-motion end-point rate control by man-in-loop command. The translational freedoms are defined so that the End Effector (EEFTR) of the arm will move in planes parallel to the principal translational planes of the Orbiter, at a rate commanded by the displacement of the Translation Hand Controller in the corresponding freedom and direction. The rotational freedoms are rate-controlled by the Rotation Hand Controller about pivot axes parallel to Orbiter roll, pitch and yaw, originating at the EEFTR reference point.

Studies of self streamlining wind tunnel real and imaginary flows

Testing in the low speed flexible walled tunnel in an effort to explain the reasons for data discrepancies at high angles of attack are presented. Automated transonic test sections were developed. The flexible walled tunnel was used in a new operating mode to a generated curved flow around the airfoil, allowing the extraction of purely rotary derivatives. Some straight wall, low speed pressure data, for wall and model, which is used for checking interference correction methods were reported. Computer software which includes an old streamlining algorithm and a prediction algorithm was examined.

An investigation for the development of an integrated optical data preprocessor

The successful fabrication and demonstration of an integrated optical circuit designed to perform a parallel processing operation by utilizing holographic subtraction to simultaneously compare N analog signal voltages with N predetermined reference voltages is summarized. The device alleviates transmission, storage and processing loads of satellite data systems by performing, at the sensor site, some preprocessing of data taken by remote sensors. Major accomplishments in the fabrication of integrated optics components include: (1) fabrication of the first LiNbO3 waveguide geodesic lens; (2) development of techniques for polishing TIR mirrors on LiNbO3 waveguides; (3) fabrication of high efficiency metal-over-photoresist gratings for waveguide beam splitters; (4) demonstration of high S/N holographic subtraction using waveguide holograms; and (5) development of alignment techniques for fabrication of integrated optics circuits. Important developments made in integrated optics are the discovery and suggested use of holographic self-subtraction in LiNbO3, development of a mathematical description of the operating modes of the preprocessor, and the development of theories for diffraction efficiency and beam quality of two dimensional beam defined gratings.

Evaluation of the JPL X-band 32 element active array

Tests performed on an X-band 32-element active array are described. Antenna pattern characteristics of the array were tested in its standard operating mode as well as several degraded performance modes, including failures of 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 16, and 31 elements. Additionally, the array was characterized with the addition of a metallic shroud, and also characterized versus rf drive level and at a single off-axis electronic beamsteered position. Characterization was performed on several of the 3/4-watt, three-stage, X-band solid-state power amplifier modules. The characterization included swept amplitude response, amplitude and phase versus temperature from -20 to +60 C, and intermodulation distortion of selected modules. The array is described and conclusions and recommendations based upon the experience and results achieved are included.

Scanning microscopy in microcircuit failure analysis

A three-phase microcircuit failure analysis procedure is presented. In the first phase, the device is nondestructively tested and the data obtained is correlated with the circumstances surrounding the failure event. The device is then subjected to a limited nondestructive analysis dominated by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Knowing that microcircuits usually fail from manufacturing defects or misuse, the analyst looks for one of the probable mechanisms. The SEM has two special operating modes that provide unique data for nondestructive analysis: voltage contrast and conductive current. These are used with other SEM modes and surface analysis techniques to analyze complicated microcircuits. The last phase includes the destructive procedures. The end product of these analyses is a corrective action that will yield a highly reliable system.

The NASA Multimission Spacecraft Modular Attitude Control System

This paper describes the design of the Modular Attitude Control Subsystem (MACS) that is incorporated in the NASA Multimission Modular Spacecraft (MMS). The MACS is required to provide precision attitude control for a wide class of spacecraft missions including earth pointing, stellar pointing and solar pointing. The MACS is composed of sensors, actuators and associated electronics. Normally the MACS computational, logic and sequencing functions are performed by an Onboard Computer (OBC) located in the MMS; however, the MACS implements an independent backup safe hold attitude controller to protect against the consequences of an OBC failure. The contents of the paper include a description of the MACS configuration and functional operation. The MACS operational modes and performance requirements are described followed by a discussion of the MACS component characteristics. The paper concludes with a description of the safe hold controller design and typical MACS OBC algorithms.

Seasat scatterometer - Results of the Gulf of Alaska workshop

The Seasat microwave scatterometer was designed to measure, globally and in nearly all weather, wind speed to an accuracy of plus or minus 2 meters per second and wind direction to plus or minus 20 deg in two swaths 500 kilometers wide on either side of the spacecraft. For two operating modes in rain-free conditions, a limited number of comparisons to high-quality surface truth indicates that these specifications may have been met.
