A pumped, two-phase flow heat transport system for orbiting instrument payloads

A pumped two-phase (heat absorption/heat rejection) thermal transport system for orbiting instrument payloads is investigated. The thermofluid characteristics necessary for the system design are discussed. A preliminary design with a series arrangement of four instrument heat stations and six radiators in a single loop is described in detail, and the total mass is estimated to be 134 kg, with the radiators, instrument heat stations, and fluid reservoir accounting for approximately 86, 24, and 12 kg, respectively. The evaluation of preliminary test results shows that the system has potential advantages; however, further research is necessary in the areas of one-g and zero-g heat transfer coefficients/fluid regimes, fluid by-pass temperature control, and reliability of small pumps.

Development of materials and process technology for dual alloy disks

Techniques for the preparation of dual alloy disks were developed and evaluated. Four material combinations were evaluated in the form of HIP consolidated and heat treated cylindrical and plate shapes in terms of elevated temperature tensile, stress rupture and low cycle fatigue properties. The process evaluation indicated that the pe-HIP AF-115 rim/loose powder Rene 95 hub combination offered the best overall range of mechanical properties for dual disk applications. The feasibility of this dual alloy concept for the production of more complex components was demonstrated by the scale up fabrication of a prototype CFM-56 disk made from this AF-115/Rene 95 combination. The hub alloy ultimate tensile strength was approximately 92 percent of the program goal of 1520 MPa (220 ksi) at 480 C (900 F) and the rim alloy stress rupture goal of 300 hours at 675 C (1250 F)/925 MPa (134 ksi) was exceeded by 200 hours. The low cycle fatigue properties were equivalent to those exhibited by HIP and heat treated alloys. There was an absence of rupture notch sensitivity in both alloys. The joint tensile properties were approximately 85 percent of the weaker of the two materials (Rene 95) and the stress rupture properties were equivalent to those of the weaker of the two materials (Rene 95).

Effects of nitrogen nutrition on the growth, yield and reflectance characteristics of corn canopies

Spectral and agronomic measurements were collected from corn (Zea mays L.) canopies under four nitrogen treatment levels (0, 67, 134, and 202 kg/ha) on 11 dates during 1978 and 12 dates during 1979. Data were analyzed to determine the relationship between the spectral responses of canopies and their argonomic characteristics as well as the spectral separability of the four treatments. Red reflectance was increased, while the near infrared reflectance was decreased for canopies under nitrogen deprivation. Spectral differences between treatments were seen throughout each growing season. The near infrared/red reflectance ratio increased spectral treatment differences over those shown by single band reflectance measures. Of the spectral variables examined, the near infrared/red reflectance ratio most effectively separated the treatments. Differences in spectral response between treatments were attributed to varying soil cover, leaf area index, and leaf pigmentation values, all of which changed with N treatment.

Photodissociation of NH3 at 106-200 nm

The absorption and fluorescence cross sections for NH3 are measured in the 106-200 nm region using synchrotron radiation as the light source. The threshold wavelengths for the production of the NH (b to X) and NH (c to a) emissions from NH3 dissociation are measured and compared with previous measurements. The heat of formation of NH determined from these thresholds agrees well with the value determined from thermochemical data. The process of dissociation of NH3 into NH2(2AL) and H2(S) has a significant quantum yield whose maximum at 134 nm is about twice the NH(c) production yield. All the vibronic levels of the B and C states produce the NH2(2A1) emission, contrary to previous theoretical interpretations.

Refractive field correctors for the Starlab ultraviolet telescope

Field correctors for a one-meter, f/15 cassegrainian telescope were designed as part of a NASA-funded study of an astronomical obervatory on board of the Space Shuttle. By means of a Gasgoigne corrector and a biconcave field flattener, astigmatism and field curvature are corrected in a 0.6 deg field. Applicable wavelength ranges are limited by chromatic aberrations. The upper wavelength is selected to match a photocathode response limit. The lower wavelength limit is defined by a filter. Examples of usable wavelength ranges are: 210 nm - 1100 nm (multialkali photocathode, fused-silica corrector elements), 177 nm - 320 nm (cesium telluride photocathode, calcium fluoride correctors); and possibly 134 nm - 190 nm (cesium iodide photocathode, lithium fluoride correctors). Residual rms lateral color is smaller than 0.02 arc sec, and axial color is smaller than 0.25 arc sec (blur diameter at the ends of the wavelength range). The correctors introduce a small amount of coma. This is compensated by adjustment of the conic constants of the telescope mirrors.

Observations of the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere using the urbana coherent-scatter radar

The Urbana coherent-scatter radar was used to observe the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere, and 134 hours of data were collected. Horizontal wind measurements show good agreement with balloon-measured winds. Gravity waves were frequently observed, and were enhanced during convective activity. Updrafts and downdrafts were observed within thunderstorms. Power returns are related to hydrostatic stability, and changes in echo specularity are shown.

On the need for spectroscopic data in ultraviolet stellar spectral synthesis calculations

A general discussion of the quality of spectroscopic data for ultraviolet (less than 3000 A) spectral synthesis calculations is presented. It is pointed out that progress in the generation of complete and accurate lists of atomic lines, and in the computation and measurement of accurate transition probabilities of the spectra of many elements is lagging behind current and near-term observational capabilities. Theoretical syntheses of the line profiles in the spectra of three middle-to-late B type stars (Pi Cet, 134 Tau, and vCap) are computed. The computations are found to be complicated and ambiguous due to the low accuracy of the oscillator strengths used in the analysis. Some characteristics of star-to-star variations in elemental abundances are discussed.

A study of the Armstrong Whitworth swing beam engine for automotive application

The introduction of ceramics to those parts suffering high thermal loading was successfully demonstrated, and there is no question that the 100 kw (134 hp) naturally aspirated engine of the future will be developed to produce up to 300 kw (402 hp) by the application of turbocharging or its equivalent. However, at the 60 - 80 kw (80 - 107 hp) size needed for the economic automotive engine, scaling down the 300 kw (402 hp) is beset by the laws of scale. The conventional four stroke diesel was not shown to be successful at the small high speed engine size. The opposed piston two stroke engine does not suffer the same laws of scale and engines in the low power range have already been marketed successfully. The half liter/cylinder Armstrong Whitworth Swing Beam Engine is the latest to be designed with the automotive market in mind. Its low noise structure and balanced linkage system coupled with advantages for easy start and potential use of low grade fuels, derived from its variable compression ratio and slow piston motion, qualifies it for the application.

Cosmic ray sidereal diurnal variation of galactic origin observed by neutron monitors

Cosmic ray sidereal diurnal variations observed by neutron monitors are analyzed for the period 1961 to 1978, by adding 134 station years data to the previous paper (Nagashima, et al., 1983). Also the dependence of the sidereal variations on Sun's polar magnetic field polarity is examined for two periods; the period of negative polarity in the northern region, 1961 to 1969 and the period of positive polarity, 1970 to 1978. It is obtained that for the former period, the amplitude A=0.0203 + or 0.0020% and the phase phi=6.1 + or - 0.4 h LST and for the latter period, 0.0020% and phi=8.6 + or - 4 h LST, respectively.

A search for quasars in the Virgo cluster region

Using objective-prism plates taken with the 44-arcmin objective prism mounted on the UK Schmidt telescope, 53 emission-line quasar candidates and 29 ultraviolet-excess objects (possible low-redshift quasars) have been found in a 5 x 5-degree field centered on 12 h 27 m, + 13 deg 30 min (1950) in the Virgo cluster of galaxies. Eighteen of these 82 candidates were observed using the double spectrograph on the Palomar 5-meter telescope; 13 of the observed objects proved to be quasars. The broad-absorption-line QSO Q1232 + 134 is the first example of the class to show broad low-ionization absorption lines (such as Mg II 2798 A) in addition to the usual high-excitation lines such as Nv 1240 A. Although no conclusive evidence for quasar-galaxy associations is found in this field, there do exist nonuniformities in the distribution of the quasar candidates which may merit further investigation. These objects will provide a useful network of probes for absorbing material in the Virgo cluster. The lines-of-sight to two of the confirmed quasars pass very close to NGC galaxies; the respective projected QSO-galaxy separations are only 4 and 11 kpc at the assumed distance of the Virgo cluster.

An improved APU for the Space Shuttle Orbiter

The Space Shuttle Orbiter Auxiliary Power Unit has operated successfully on all four orbiter vehicles and all missions. The current Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) operational life is limited to 12 missions, and the APU turnaround time between flights is longer than originally anticipated. The objective of the Improved APU program is to increase life to 50 missions, reduce installed vehicle weight by 134 lb., and reduce turnaround time. This paper describes the design changes incorporated into the improved APU and the associated development testing.

Ultraviolet interstellar absorption toward stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud. III - The structure and kinematics of the Small Magellanic Cloud

The structural and kinematic properties of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) were studied by combining IUE satellite observations of individual bright stars (Sk 159 and HD 5980) with existing optical and radio data. It is shown that the SMC has a complex structure due to gravitational interaction with the Milky Way and the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Stars observed in the southwest regions of the SMC were associated with the 134 km/s H I complex. H II regions in the SMC were distributed according to a rotational velocity of 167 km/s. All IUE high-dispersion targets exhibit ultraviolet absorption near 100 km/s and 200 km/s. It is shown that the absorption arises in the widespread H I complexes at velocities similar to the H II regions. Some possible explanations for the origin of H II and H I regions in the SMC are discussed. The locations of the nine high-dispersion IUE targets in the SMC are given.

Radiation mapping on Spacelab 1: Experiment no. INS006

The first attempt at mapping the radiation environment inside Spacelab is described. Measurements were made by a set of passive radiation detectors distributed throughout the volume inside the Spacelab 1 module, in the access tunnel and outside on the pallet. Measurements of the low linear energy transfer (LET) component obtained from the TLD thermoluminescent detectors (TLD) ranged from 92 to 134 mrad, yielding an average low LET dose rate of 10.0 mrads/day inside the module. Because of the higher inclination orbit, substantial fluxes of highly ionizing (HZE particles) high charge and energy galactic cosmic rays were observed for the first time on an STS flight, yielding an overall average mission dose-equivalent of 295 mrem, or 29.5 mrem/day, which is about three times higher than that measured on previous STS missions. Little correlation is found between measured average dose rates or HZE fluences and the estimates shielding throughout the volume of the module.

Multiband far-infrared observations of the NGC 6334 complex

Multiband far-infrared (20-155 microns) observations of the large H II region/molecular cloud complex NGC 6334 are presented. The observations were performed simultaneously in four bands with effective wavelengths 21, 42, 71, and 134 microns. Eight far-infrared sources were detected which cover the range from sources with little of no continuum radio emission to well-developed H II regions. Maps of dust temperature and far-infrared optical depth of the complex are presented which reveal large-scale variations in the color temperature and optical depth. Star formation in the complex is discussed and it is concluded that a Rayleigh-Taylor instability generated by the gravitational attraction of the galactic plane can explain the regular separation of the far-IR sources.

Shuttle get-away special experiments

This presentation describes two shuttle Get-Away-Special (GAS) experiments built by McDonnell Douglas to investigate low-g propellant acquisition and gaging. The first experiment was flown on shuttle mission 41-G in October 1984. The second experiment has been qualified for flight and is waiting for a flight assignment. The tests performed to qualify these experiments for flight are described, and the lessons learned which can be applied to future GAS experiments are discussed. Finally, survey results from 134 GAS experiments flown to date are presented. On the basis of these results it is recommended that future GAS experiments be qualified to shuttle thermal and dynamic environments through a rigorous series of mission operating tests. Furthermore, should automatic activation of the experiment be required during the boost phase of the mission, NASA-supplied redundant barometric switches should be employed to trigger the activation.

Comparison of flight-measured and calculated temperatures on the space shuttle orbiter

Structural temperatures and thermal protection system surface temperatures were measured on the space shuttle during the flight of STS 5. The measured data are compared with values calculated at wing stations 134, 240, and 328 and at fuselage station 877. The theoretical temperatures were calculated using the structural performance and resizing finite element thermal analysis program. The comparisons show that the calculated temperatures are, generally, in good agreement with the measured data.

A two-spot albedo model for the surface of Pluto

This paper summarizes the work of Marcialis (1983, 1984). A finite-element approach has been used to generate synthetic light curves of an unevenly bright, rotating sphere. Application to the Pluto-Charon system shows that two circular spots (46 and 28 deg in radius, both at south latitude 23 deg, separated by 134 deg in longitude) with albedos half that of the surrounding terrain can accurately reproduce six available photoelectric light curves between 1953 and 1982. A dark equatorial band (extending from south latitude 69 deg to anywhere between 50 and 65 deg north latitude) can be invoked to explain the secular dimming. Constraints on this equatorial band, which may alternatively be viewed as two polar caps, are such that to date its dimensions are not uniquely determined. However, polar caps with albedos near unity serve quite well to explain the 40-percent dimming of Pluto since its discovery in 1930. Hardie's 1964 photoelectric observations are presented for the first time in tabular form.

Separating Isotopes With Laser And Electron Beams

Need for second laser eliminated. In scheme for separation of isotopes, electrons of suitable kinetic energy ionize specific isotope excited by laser beam in magnetic field. Ionization by electron beams cheap and efficient in comparison to ionization by laser beams, and requires no special technical developments. Feasibility of new scheme demonstrated in selective ionization of Ba138, making possible separation of isotope from Ba isotopes of atomic weight 130, 132, 134, 135, 136, and 137.
