Magnetic susceptibility of Inconel alloys 718, 625, and 600 at cryogenic temperatures

After a hydrogen fuel bleed valve problem on the Discovery Space Shuttle was traced to the strong magnetization of Inconel 718 in the armature of the linear variable differential transformer near liquid hydrogen temperatures, the ac magnetic susceptibility of three samples of Inconel 718 of slightly different compositions, one sample of Inconel 625, and on sample of Inconel 600 were measured as a function of temperature. Inconel 718 alloys are found to exhibit a spin glass state below 16 K. Inconel 600 exhibits three different magnetic phases, the lowest-temperature state (below 6 K) being somewhat similar to that of Inconel 718. The magnetic states of the Inconel alloys and their magnetic susceptibilities appear to be strongly dependent on the exact composition of the alloy.

Strong Ferromagnetic Exchange Coupling and Single-Molecule Magnetism in MoS 4 3– -Bridged Dilanthanide Complexes

We report the synthesis and characterization of the trinuclear 4d-4f compounds [Co(C 5 Me 5 ) 2 ][(C 5 Me 5 ) 2 Ln(μ-S) 2 Mo(μ-S) 2 Ln(C 5 Me 5 ) 2 ], 1-Ln (Ln = Y, Gd, Tb, Dy), containing the highly polarizable MoS 4 3 - bridging unit. UV-Vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectra and DFT calculations of 1-Ln reveal a low-energy metal-to-metal charge transfer transition assigned to charge transfer from the singly occupied 4d z 2 orbital of Mo V to the empty 5d orbitals of the lanthanides (4d in the case of 1-Y ), mediated by sulfur-based 3p orbitals. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectra collected for 1-Y in a tetrahydrofuran solution show large 89 Y hyperfine coupling constants of A ⊥ = 23 MHz and A || = 26 MHz, indicating the presence of significant yttrium-localized unpaired electron density. Magnetic susceptibility data support similar electron delocalization and ferromagnetic Ln-Mo exchange for 1-Gd , 1-Tb , and 1-Dy . This ferromagnetic exchange gives rise to an S = 15/2 ground state for 1-Gd and one of the largest magnetic exchange constants involving Gd III observed to date, with J Gd-Mo = +16.1(2) cm -1 . Additional characterization of 1-Tb and 1-Dy by ac magnetic susceptibility measurements reveals that both compounds exhibit slow magnetic relaxation. Although a Raman magnetic relaxation process is dominant for both 1-Tb and 1-Dy , an extracted thermal relaxation barrier of U eff = 68 cm -1 for 1-Dy is the largest yet reported for a complex containing a paramagnetic 4d metal center. Furthermore, these results provide a potentially generalizable route to enhanced n d-4f magnetic exchange, revealing opportunities for the design of new n d-4f single-molecule magnets and bulk magnetic materials.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Cooperative 3d–5d Magnetism in Rock Salt Type Li 4 NiOsO 6 and Li 3 Ni 2 OsO 6

Two new transition metal oxides with the nominal chemical compositions of Li 4 NiOsO 6 and Li 3 Ni 2 OsO 6 were successfully synthesized. Both compounds crystallize in an ordered rock salt structure type in the monoclinic C2/m space group. The crystal structures were determined using both synchrotron X-ray and time-of-flight neutron, powder diffraction data. In both phases, Ni2+ ions are present while oxidation states of osmium are +6 and +5 in Li 4 NiOsO 6 and Li 3 Ni 2 OsO 6 , respectively. Ni2+ ions in the hypothetical fully ordered phase form a honeycomb arrangement in the ab crystallographic plane and these hexagons are centered by osmium ions. Furthermore, the magnetic layers are separated along the c axis by the octahedra, which are centered by Li+ (or Li+/Ni 2+ , depending on the chemical compositions). Crystal structure refinements reveal that there is some degree of mixed occupancy in cationic positions. Temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility data for both phases show ferrimagnetic transitions with predominant antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions among 3d electrons of nickel and Sd electrons of osmium. Iso-thermal magnetization loops as a function of the applied magnetic field below the transition temperatures confirm the ferrimagnetic nature in magnetic transitions. Temperature dependent heat capacity data, however, did not exhibit any anomaly in either phase, indicating the absence of long-range magnetic ordering. The lack of long-range order for both Os 5+ and Os 6+ -based compounds was also confirmed by low temperature neutron diffraction data down to 10 K. Temperature dependent AC magnetic susceptibility data in various frequencies for both samples indicate that Li 4 NiOsO 6 exhibits spin-glass-like behavior, while the transition temperature for Li 3 Ni 2 OsO 6 is nearly frequency independent.

Local imaging of diamagnetism in proximity-coupled niobium nanoisland arrays on gold thin films.

In this work, we study the effect of engineered disorder on the local magnetic response of proximity-coupled superconducting island arrays by comparing scanning superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) susceptibility measurements to a model in which we treat the system as a network of one-dimensional (1D) superconductor-normal-metal-superconductor Josephson junctions, each with a Josephson coupling energy E-J determined by the junction length or distance between islands. We find that the disordered arrays exhibit a spatially inhomogeneous diamagnetic response which, for low local applied magnetic fields, is well described by this junction network model, and we discuss these results as they relate to inhomogeneous 2D superconductors. Our model of the static magnetic response of the arrays does not fully capture the onset of nonlinearity and dissipation with increasing applied field, as these effects are associated with vortex motion due to the dynamic nature of the scanning SQUID susceptometry measurement. This work demonstrates a model 2D superconducting system with engineered disorder, and it highlights the impact of dissipation on the local magnetic properties of 2D superconductors and Josephson junction arrays.

Néel-type antiferromagnetic order and magnetic field–temperature phase diagram in the spin-1/2 rare-earth honeycomb compound YbCl 3

Most of the searches for Kitaev materials deal with 4 d / 5 d magnets with spin-orbit-coupled J = 1 / 2 local moments such as iridates and α - RuCl 3 . Here we propose the monoclinic YbCl 3 with a Yb 3 + honeycomb lattice for the exploration of Kitaev physics. We perform thermodynamic, a c susceptibility, angle-dependent magnetic torque, and neutron diffraction measurements on YbCl 3 single crystal. We find that the Yb 3 + ion exhibits a Kramers doublet ground state that gives rise to an effective spin J eff = 1 / 2 local moment. Additionally, the compound exhibits short-range magnetic order below 1.20 K, followed by a long-range Néel-type antiferromagnetic order at 0.60 K, below which the ordered Yb 3 + spins lie in the a c plane with an angle of 16(11) ° away from the a axis. These orders can be suppressed by in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields at around 6 and 10 T, respectively. Moreover, the Néel temperature varies nonmonotonically under the out-of-plane magnetic fields, suggesting a reduced spin dimensionality. Finally, together with the strong in-plane magnetic anisotropy and the reduced order moment 0.8(1) μ B at 0.25 K, all indicate that YbCl 3 could be a two-dimensional spin system to proximate the Kitaev physics.

Structure and properties of NdCuGa 3 single crystals

Here this manuscript reports on the structural and magnetic properties of NdCuGa 3 using powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), zero-field single crystal neutron diffraction, magnetization, and specific heat measurements. Our XRD on a single crystal specimen of NdCuGa3 confirmed that it crystallizes in the tetragonal BaNiSi 3 -type structure. A magnetic phase transition at T N = 3.3 K is assessed using specific heat and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements. No additional anomaly below T N down to 50 mK was detected by performing specific heat measurements. Neutron single crystal diffraction data collected at T = 300 mK confirm the antiferromagnetic phase below T N = 3.3 K with the propagation vector $\vec{\tau}$ = (0.2, 0, 0). Possible magnetic structure solutions of NdCuGa 3 are discussed

Analysis of spin frustration in an Fe III 7 cluster using a combination of computational, experimental, and magnetostructural correlation methods

The synthesis, structure, and magnetic properties are reported for [Fe 7 O 3 (O 2 C t Bu) 9 (mda) 3 (H 2 O) 3 ] ( 1 ), where mdaH 2 is N -methyldiethanolamine. 1 was prepared from the reaction of [Fe 3 O(O 2 C t Bu) 6 (H 2 O) 3 ](NO 3 ) with mdaH 2 in a 1:~3 ratio in MeCN. The core of 1 consists of a central octahedral Fe III ion held within a non-planar Fe 6 loop by three μ 3 -O 2- and three μ 2 -RO - arms from the three mda 2- chelates. Variable-temperature dc and ac magnetic susceptibility studies revealed dominant antiferromagnetic coupling, leading to a ground state spin of S = 5 / 2 . The ground state was confirmed by a fit of magnetization data collected in the 0.1–7.0 T and 1.8–10.0 K ranges. The four Fe 2 pairwise exchange parameters ( J 1 - J 4 ) were estimated by independent methods: theoretical calculations using either broken symmetry energy differences (-46.3, -16.2, -3.9, and - 28.1 cm -1 , respectively) or Green’s function approximation methods (-41.4, -14.8, -13.2, and - 24.7 cm -1 ), and a magnetostructural correlation (MSC) previously developed for high nuclearity Fe III /O complexes (-39.5, -13.8, -6.7, and - 23.5 cm -1 ). Additionally, the J 1 - J 4 obtained from the MSC and theoretical methods were used with the program PHI to both simulate χ M T vs T as well as to serve as reasonable input values to fit the experimental data (-41.0, -11.4, -5.0, and - 27.3 cm -1 ). Analysis of the J ij led to identification of the spin frustration effects operative and the resultant spin vector alignments at each Fe III ion, thus allowing for the rationalization of the experimental ground state.

Iron(III)–Oxo Cluster Chemistry with Dimethylarsinate Ligands: Structures, Magnetic Properties, and Computational Studies

A program has been initiated to develop Fe III /oxo cluster chemistry with the ‘pseudo-carboxylate’ ligand dimethylarsinate (Me 2 AsO 2 - ) for comparison with the well investigated Fe III /oxo/carboxylate cluster area. The synthesis and characterization of three polynuclear Fe III complexes are reported, [Fe 12 O 4 (O 2 C t Bu) 8 (O 2 AsMe 2 ) 17 (H 2 O) 3 ]Cl 3 (1), Na 2 [Fe 12 Na 2 O 4 (O 2 AsMe 2 ) 20 (NO 3 ) 6 (Me 2 AsO 2 H) 2 (H 2 O) 4 ](NO 3 ) 6 (2) and [Fe 3 (O 2 AsMe 2 ) 6 (Me 2 AsO 2 H) 2 (hqn) 2 ](NO 3 ) (3), where hqn is 8-hydroxyquinoline. The Fe 12 core of 1 is a type never previously encountered in Fe III carboxylate chemistry, consisting of two Fe 6 units each of which comprises two {Fe 3 (μ 3 -O 2- )} units bridged by three Me 2 AsO 2 - groups and linked into an Fe 12 loop structure by two anti-anti η 1 :η 1 :μ Me 2 AsO 2 - groups, a bridging mode extremely rare with carboxylates. 2 also consists of two Fe 6 units, differing in their ligation from those in 1, and this time linked together into a linear structure by a central {Na 2 (NO 3 ) 2 } bridging unit. 3 is a linear Fe 3 complex with no monoatomic bridges between Fe III ions, a very rare situation in Fe III chemistry with any ligands, and unprecedented in Fe carboxylate chemistry. The distinct differences observed in arsinate vs carboxylate ligation modes are rationalized largely based on the greater basicity of the former vs the latter. Variable-temperature dc and ac magnetic susceptibility data reveal all Fe 2 pairwise interactions to be antiferromagnetic. For 1 and 2, the different J ij couplings were estimated by use of a magnetostructural correlation for high nuclearity Fe III -oxo clusters and by density functional theory calculations using broken symmetry methods, allowing identification of their relative spin vector alignments and thus rationalization of their S = 0 ground states. The J ij values were then used as input values to give excellent fits of the experimental χM T vs T data. For 3, the fits of the experimental χM T vs T data to the Van Vleck equation or with PHI gave a very weak J 12 = -0.8(1) cm -1 (H = –2JŠ i ·Š j convention) between adjacent Fe III ions, and an S = 5/2 ground state. Furthermore, these initial Fe III arsinate complexes also provide structural parameters that help validate literature assignments of arsinate binding modes to iron oxide/hydroxide minerals as part of environmental concerns of using arsenic-containing herbicides in agriculture.

Strong Axiality in a Dysprosium(III) Bis(borolide) Complex Leads to Magnetic Blocking at 65 K

Substituted dysprosocenium complexes of the type [Dy(Cp R ) 2 ] + exhibit slow magnetic relaxation at cryogenic temperatures and have emerged as top-performing single-molecule magnets. The remarkable properties of these compounds derive in part from the strong axial ligand field afforded by the cyclopentadiene anions, and the design of analogous compounds with even stronger ligand fields is one promising route toward identifying new single-molecule magnets that retain a magnetic memory at even higher temperatures. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of a dysprosium bis(borolide) compound, [K(18-crown-6)][Dy(BC 4 Ph 5 ) 2 ] (1), featuring the dysprosocenate anion [Dy(BC 4 Ph 5 ) 2 ] - with a pseudoaxial coordination environment afforded by two dianionic pentaphenyl borolide ligands. Variable-field magnetization data reveal open magnetic hysteresis up to 66 K, establishing 1 as a top-performing single-molecule magnet among its dysprosocenium analogues. Ac magnetic susceptibility data indicate that 1 relaxes via an Orbach mechanism above ~80 K with U eff = 1500(100) cm -1 and τ 0 = 10 -12.0(9) s, whereas Raman relaxation and quantum tunneling of the magnetization dominate at lower temperatures. Compound 1 exhibits a 100 s blocking temperature of 65 K, among the highest reported for dysprosium-based single-molecule magnets. Ab initio spin dynamics calculations support the experimental U eff and τ 0 values and enable a quantitative comparison of the relaxation dynamics of 1 and two representative dysprosocenium cations, yielding additional insights into the impact of the crystal field splitting and vibronic coupling on the observed relaxation behavior. Importantly, compound 1 represents a step toward the development of alternatives to substituted dysprosocenium single-molecule magnets with increased axiality.

Dynamical ground state in the XY pyrochlore Yb2GaSbO7

Abstract The magnetic ground state of the pyrochlore Yb 2 GaSbO 7 has not been established. The persistent spin fluctuations observed by muon spin-relaxation measurements at low temperatures have not been adequately explained for this material using existing theories for quantum magnetism. Here we report on the synthesis and characterisation of Yb 2 GaSbO 7 to revisit the nature of the magnetic ground state. Through DC and AC magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and neutron scattering experiments, we observe evidence for a dynamical ground state that makes Yb 2 GaSbO 7 a promising candidate for disorder-induced spin-liquid or spin-singlet behaviour. This state is quite fragile, being tuned to a splayed ferromagnet in a modest magnetic field μ 0 H c ~ 1.5 T.

Exchange-biased quantum tunnelling of magnetization in a [Mn 3 ] 2 dimer of single-molecule magnets with rare ferromagnetic inter-Mn 3 coupling

A covalently-linked dimer of two single-molecule magnets (SMMs), [Mn 6 O(O 2 CMe) 6 (1,3-ppmd) 3 ](ClO 4 ) 2 , has been synthesized from the reaction of [Mn 3 O(O 2 CMe) 6 (py) 3 ](ClO 4 ) with 1,3-phenylene-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethanone) dioxime (1,3-ppmdH 2 ). It contains two [Mn III 3 O] +7 triangular units linked by three 1,3-ppmd 2 - groups into an [Mn 3 ] 2 dimer with D 3 symmetry. Solid-state dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements showed that each Mn 3 subunit retains its properties as an SMM with an S = 6 ground state. Magnetization vs. dc field sweeps on a single crystal reveal hysteresis loops below 1.3 K exhibiting exchange-biased quantum tunnelling of magnetization (QTM) steps with a bias field of +0.06 T. This is the first example of a dimer of SMMs showing a positive exchange bias of the QTM steps in the hysteresis loops, and it has therefore been subjected to a detailed analysis. Simulation of the loops determines that each Mn3 unit is exchange-coupled with its neighbour primarily through the 1,3-ppmd 2 - linkers, confirming a weak ferromagnetic inter-Mn 3 interaction of J 12 ≈ +6.5 mK ($\hat{H}= -2J\hat{S}_i·\hat{S}_j$ convention). High-frequency EPR studies of a microcrystalline powder sample enable accurate determination of the zero-field splitting parameters of the uncoupled Mn3 SMMs, while also confirming the weak exchange interaction between the two SMMs within each [Mn 3 ] 2 dimer. The combined results emphasize the ability of designed covalent linkers to generate inter-SMM coupling of a particular sign and relative magnitude, and thus the ability of such linkers to modulate the quantum physics. As such, this article supports the feasibility of using designed covalent linkers to develop molecular oligomers of SMMs, or other magnetic molecules, as multi-qubit systems and/or other components of new quantum technologies.

Coexistence of metamagnetism and slow relaxation of magnetization in ammonium hexafluoridorhenate

The (NH 4 ) 2 [ReF 6 ] (1) salt was studied by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, theoretical calculations, and magnetic measurements. 1 crystallizes in the trigonal space group P$\overline{3}$m1 (Re–F = 1.958(5) Å). In the Raman spectrum of 1, splitting of the observed peaks was observed and correlated to the valence frequencies of vibration of the [ReF 6 ] 2– anion. The study of the magnetic properties of 1, through DC and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements, reveals the coexistence of metamagnetism and slow relaxation of magnetization at low temperature, which is unusual in the molecular systems based on the paramagnetic 5d metal ions reported so far.

In-plane uniaxial-strain tuning of superconductivity and charge-density wave in CsV 3 Sb 5

The kagome superconductor CsV 3 Sb 5 with exotic electronic properties has attracted substantial research interest, and the interplay between the superconductivity and the charge-density wave is crucial for understanding its unusual electronic ground state. In this work, we performed resistivity and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements on CsV 3 Sb 5 single crystals uniaxially-strained along [100] and [110] directions. We find that the uniaxial-strain tuning effect ofT c (dT c /dε) andT CDW (dT CDW /dε) are almost identical along these distinct high-symmetry directions. These findings suggest the in-plane uniaxial-strain-tuning ofT c andT CDW in CsV 3 Sb 5 are dominated by associatedc-axis strain, whereas the response to purely in-plane strains is likely small.

Ferromagnetic moment in the magnetoelectric antiferromagnet Co 4 ⁢Ta 2 ⁢O 9 : Evidence of the 𝑃⁢1 magnetic space group

Exploring ferromagnetic moments in magnetoelectric materials is of both fundamental and technological importance. It enables the control of the correlated state using an uncompensated moment. However, its material realization is challenging owing to its exclusive microscopic mechanisms. Here, we report a nearly isotropic ferromagnetic moment in the magnetoelectric antiferromagnet Co 4 ⁢Ta 2 ⁢O 9 , by performing dc and ac magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and neutron diffraction measurements on identical single crystals. Combined with the group theory analysis, we demonstrate a 𝑃⁢1 magnetic space group. This implies that physical activities can occur along any crystallographic direction, which explains the unusual magnetoelectric property of Co 4⁢ Ta 2⁢ O 9 . The ground state is classified as the M-type altermagnet based on the magnetic point group. Our study provides essential information to resolve the debate on the magnetic ground state and understand the magnetoelectric properties of the related compound with the prospect of observing and examining the 𝑃⁢1 magnetic space group or ferromagnet in ferroelectrics.

Polaronic transport and thermoelectricity in Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 single crystals

Here, we carried out a comprehensive study of the structural, electrical transport, thermal, and thermodynamic properties in ferrimagnetic Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 single crystals. Mn and Te K -edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy and synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction were measured to provide information on the local atomic environment and the average crystal structure. The dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate a second-order paramagnetic to ferrimagnetic transition at T c ~ 74 K, which is further confirmed by the specific heat measurement. Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 exhibits semiconducting behavior along with a large negative magnetoresistance of -87% at T c and a relatively high value of thermopower up to ~10 mV/K at 5 K. Besides the rapidly increasing resistivity ρ(T) and thermopower S(T) below 20 K, the large discrepancy between the activation energy for resistivity E ρ and thermopower E S above 20 K indicates the polaronic transport mechanism. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity κ(T) of Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 is notably rather low, comparable to Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 , and is strongly suppressed in the magnetic field across T c , indicating the presence of strong spin-lattice coupling, also similar with Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 .

Ground state in proximity to a possible Kitaev spin liquid: The undistorted honeycomb iridate Na x IrO 3 (0.60 ≤ x ≤ 0.80)

Here, we report the results of our study of a recently synthesized honeycomb iridate Na x IrO 3 (0.60 ≤ x ≤ 0.80). Single-crystal Na x IrO 3 adopts a honeycomb lattice noticeably without distortions and stacking disorder inherently existent in its sister compound Na 2 IrO 3 . The oxidation state of the Ir ion is a mixed valence state resulting from a majority Ir 5+ (5d 4 ) ion and a minority Ir 6+ (5d 3 ) ion. Na x IrO 3 is a Mott insulator likely with a predominant pseudospin =1 state. It exhibits an effective moment of 1.1 μB/Ir and a Curie-Weiss temperature of –19 K but with no discernible long-range order above 1 K. The physical behavior below 1 K features two prominent anomalies at T h = 0.9 K and T l = 0.12 K in both the heat capacity and AC magnetic susceptibility. Intermediate between T h and T l lies a pronounced temperature linearity of the heat capacity with a large slope of 77 mJ /mole K 2 , a feature expected for highly correlated metals but not at all for insulators. These results along with a comparison drawn with the honeycomb lattices Na 2 IrO 3 and (Na 0.2 Li 0.8 ) 2 IrO 3 point to an exotic ground state in proximity to a possible Kitaev spin liquid.

Thermodynamic insights into the intricate magnetic phase diagram of EuAl 4

The tetragonal intermetallic compound EuAl 4 hosts an exciting variety of low-temperature phases. In addition to a charge density wave below 140 K, four ordered magnetic phases are observed below 15.4 K. Recently, a skyrmion phase was proposed based on Hall effect measurements under a c-axis magnetic field. Here, we present a detailed investigation of the phase transitions in EuAl 4 under c-axis magnetic field. Our dilatometry, heat-capacity, DC magnetometry, AC magnetic susceptibility, and resonant ultrasound spectroscopy measurements reveal three magnetic phase transitions not previously reported. The first key result is a detailed H ∥ [001] magnetic phase diagram mapping the seven phases we observe. Second, we identify a high-field phase, phase VII, which directly corresponds to the region were skyrmions have been previously suggested. Our results provide guidance for future studies exploring the complex magnetic interactions and spin structures in EuAl 4 .

Experimental observation of spin glass state in the highly disordered quaternary Heusler alloy FeRuMnGa

The realization of the spin-glass (SG) state in Heusler alloys is very rare despite the presence of inherent structural and elemental disorder in those compounds. Although a few half- and full-Heusler alloys are known to exhibit the SG state, there is hardly any manifestation of the same in cases of quaternary Heusler compounds. Here we report the observation of a SG state in a highly disordered equiatomic quaternary Heusler compound: FeRuMnGa where the SG state is in between the canonical SG and the cluster glass. Different intricate features of the SG state including nonequilibrium magnetic dynamics at low temperatures in the compound are unveiled through our comprehensive magnetic, heat capacity, and neutron-diffraction studies. Further the structural disorder in the sample is neither conventional A2 - nor B2 -type whereas those two types are commonly observed for Heusler compounds. The presence of disorder also plays a significant role in electron transport properties of the alloy, which is reflected in its exhibition of semimetallic behavior and anomalous Hall effect at low temperatures.
