Effects of transverse shear on large deflection random response of symmetric composite laminates with mixed boundary conditions

Nonlinear equations of motion of symmetrically laminated anisotropic plates are derived considering von Karman strains and transverse shear effects. Using a single-mode Galerkin procedure, the nonlinear modal equation is obtained. The direct equivalent linearization method is employed for solution of this equation. The effects of transverse shear on large deflection vibration of laminated plates with mixed boundary support conditions under random excitation are studied. Mean-square deflections and mean-square inplane strains are obtained for symmetric graphite-epoxy laminates. Using equilibrium equations and the continuity requirements, the mean-square transverse shear stresses are calculated. The results obtained will be useful in the sonic fatigue design of composite aircraft panels. The analysis is presented in detail for plates with two opposing edges simply supported and the remaining edges clamped.

Moment distributions around holes in symmetric composite laminates subjected to bending moments

An analytical investigation of the effects of holes on the moment distribution of symmetric composite laminates subjected to bending moments is described. A general, closed-form solution for the moment distribution of an infinite anisotropic plate is derived, and this solution is used to determine stress distributions both on the hole boundary and throughout the plate. Results are presented for several composite laminates that have holes and are subjected to either pure bending or cylindrical bending. Laminates with a circular hole or with an elliptical hole are studied. Laminate moment distributions are discussed, and ply stresses are described.

Crack Turning Mechanics of Composite Wing Skin Panels

The safety of future composite wing skin integral stiffener panels requires a full understanding of failure mechanisms of these damage tolerance critical structures under both in-plane and bending loads. Of primary interest is to derive mathematical models using fracture mechanics in anisotropic cracked plate structures, to assess the crack turning mechanisms, and thereby to enhance the residual strength in the integral stiffener composite structures. The use of fracture mechanics to assess the failure behavior in a cracked structure requires the identification of critical fracture parameters which govern the severity of stress and deformation field ahead of the flaw, and which can be evaluated using information obtained from the flaw tip. In the three-year grant, the crack-tip fields under plane deformation, crack-tip fields for anisotropic plates and anisotropic shells have been obtained. In addition, methods for determining the stress intensity factors, energy release rate, and the T-stresses have been proposed and verified. The research accomplishments can be summarized as follows: (1) Under plane deformation in anisotropic solids, the asymptotic crack-tip fields have been obtained using Stroh formalism; (2) The T-stress and the coefficient of the second term for sigma(sub y), g(sub 32), have been obtained using path-independent integral, the J-integral and Betti's reciprocal theorem together with auxiliary fields; (3) With experimental data performed by NASA, analyses indicated that the mode-I critical stress intensity factor K(sub Q) provides a satisfactory characterization of fracture initiation for a given laminate thickness, provided the failure is fiber-dominated and crack extends in a self-similar manner; (4) The high constraint specimens, especially for CT specimens, due to large T-stress and large magnitude of negative g(sub 32) term may be expected to inhibit the crack extension in the same plane and promote crack turning; (5) Crack turning out of crack plane in generally anisotropic solids under plane deformation has been studied; (6) The role of T-stress and the higher-order term of sigma(sub y) on the crack turning and stability of the kinked crack has been quantified; (7) Asymptotic crack-tip fields including the effect of transverse shear deformation (Reissner plate theory) in an anisotropic plate under bending, twisting moments, and transverse shear loads has been presented; (8) The expression of the path-independent J-integral in terms of the generalized stress and strain has been derived; (9) Asymptotic crack-tip fields including the effect of transverse shear deformation (Reissner shallow shell theory) in a general anisotropic shell has been developed; (10) The Stroh formalism was used to characterize the crack tip fields in shells up to the second term and the energy release rate was expressed in a very compact form.

Buckling and Vibration of Fiber Reinforced Composite Plates With Nanofiber Reinforced Matrices

Anisotropic composite plates were evaluated with nanofiber reinforced matrices (NFRM). The nanofiber reinforcement volumes ratio in the matrix was 0.01. The plate dimensions were 20 by 10 by 1.0 in. (508 by 254 by 25.4 mm). Seven different loading condition cases were evaluated for buckling: three for uniaxial loading, three for pairs of combined loading, and one with three combined loadings. The anisotropy arose from the unidirectional plates having been at 30 from the structural axis. The anisotropy had a full 6 by 6 rigidities matrix which were satisfied and solved by a Galerkin buckling algorithm. For vibration the same conditions were used with the applied cods about a small fraction of the buckling loads. The buckling and vibration results showed that the NFRM plates buckled at about twice those with conventional matrix.

Flutter and buckling of general laminated plates

An anisotropic buckling and flutter analysis is developed with allowance for both bending-extensional coupling and bending-twisting coupling within the framework of linear small deflection theory for simply supported general laminated plates. The extended Galerkin method is used to obtain approximate solutions to the coupled governing equations. The effects of various anisotropic stiffness parameters on the static and dynamic stability of laminated plates are evaluated, with particular emphasis on assessing the range of applicability of classical orthotropic plate theory. It is shown that bending-extensional coupling and bending-twisting stiffness terms have a destabilizing effect on buckling and flutter, the effect being more pronounced for a small number of layers. For symmetric plates, the number of layers required for orthotropic plate theory to be applicable is generally less for the buckling problem than for flutter. For square plates, aligning the fibers with the direction of airflow over the plate surface results in the highest flutter dynamic pressure.

Free vibrations of laminated composite elliptic plates

The free vibrations are studied of laminated anisotropic elliptic plates with clamped edges. The analytical formulation is based on a Mindlin-Reissner type plate theory with the effects of transverse shear deformation, rotary inertia, and bending-extensional coupling included. The frequencies and mode shapes are obtained by using the Rayleigh-Ritz technique in conjunction with Hamilton's principle. A computerized symbolic integration approach is used to develop analytic expressions for the stiffness and mass coefficients and is shown to be particularly useful in evaluating the derivatives of the eigenvalues with respect to certain geometric and material parameters. Numerical results are presented for the case of angle-ply composite plates with skew-symmetric lamination.

Sinusoidal response of composite-material plates with material damping.

A general forced-vibration analysis is presented for laminated anisotropic rectangular plates including material damping. The theory used is the laminated version of the Mindlin plate theory and includes thickness-shear flexibility and rotatory and coupling inertia. A solution is obtained by the Rayleigh-Ritz method, extended to include the energy dissipated and the work done by the excitation. The analysis is applied to prediction of the resonant frequencies and associated nodal patterns and damping ratios of the first five modes for a series of rectangular plates with free edges. The plates considered consist of unidirectional boron-fiber/epoxy composite material with respective fiber orientations of 0, 10, 30, 45, 60, and 90 deg.

Magneto-thermo-elastokinetics of geometrically nonlinear laminated composite plates. Part 2: vibration and wave propagation

In Part 1 of this paper, the governing equations of geometrically nonlinear, anisotropic composite plates incorporating magneto-thermo-elastic effects have been derived. In order to gain insight into the implications of a number of geometrical and physical features of the system. three special cases are investigated: (i) free vibration of a plate strip immersed in a transversal magnetic field; (ii) free vibration of the plate strip immersed in an axial magnetic field; (iii) magneto-elastic wave propagations of an infinite plate. Within each of these cases, a prescribed uniform thermal field is considered. Special coupling characteristics between the magnetic and elastic fields are put into evidence. Extensive numerical investigations are conducted and pertinent conclusions which highlight the various effects induced by the magneto-elastic couplings and the finite electroconductivity, are outlined.

Analysis of laminated composite plates using a higher-order shear deformation theory

A higher-order deformation theory is used to analyse laminated anisotropic composite plates for deflections, stresses, natural frequencies and buckling loads. The theory accounts for parabolic distribution of the transverse shear stresses, and requires no shear correction coefficients. A displacement finite element model of the theory is developed, and applications of the element to bending, vibration and stability of laminated plates are discussed. The present solutions are compared with those obtained using the classical plate theory and the three-dimensional elasticity theory.

Response of Composite Plates with Inclined Elliptical Notches and Subjected to Axial Compression

An analysis method for predicting the inplane stress states in anisotropic finite plates with an elliptical notch is presented. This method can be used to analyze plates with arbitrary notch orientations with respect to the plate material axes. The analysis results have been validated using finite element analysis results for unnotched composite plates and experimental and finite element analysis results for stiffened composite panels with a skin that has orthotropic properties. The good agreement between these results, until the panel exhibits nonlinear response either due to bending or initiation of damage, indicates that the present analysis method can be used to determine accurately the inplane stress states and stress concentrations at and around an elliptical notch.

Quantification of Saint-Venant's Principle for a General Prismatic Member

A semi-analytic finite element method for finding the decay rates of edge effects in anisotropic layered plates was extended to the treatment of prismatic members of an arbitrary cross section composed of any number of anisotropic elements. The displacement fields corresponding to the decay rates with positive real part were determined for a homogenous graphite/epoxy plate two units thick. The behavior of a rectangular beam is also considered.

A three-dimensional nonlinear analysis of cross-ply rectangular composite plates

The results of a three-dimensional, geometrically nonlinear, finite-element analysis of the bending of cross-ply laminated anisotropic composite plates are presented. Individual laminae are assumed to be homogeneous, orthotropic and linearly elastic. A fully three-dimensional isoparametric finite element with eight nodes (i.e. linear element) and 24 degrees of freedom (three displacement components per node) is used to model the laminated plate. The finite element results of the linear analysis are found to agree very well with the exact solutions of cross-ply laminated rectangular plates under sinusoidal loading. The finite element results of the three-dimensional, geometrically nonlinear analysis are compared with those obtained by using a shear deformable, geometrically nonlinear, plate theory. It is found that the deflections predicted by the shear deformable plate theory are in fair agreement with those predicted by three-dimensional elasticity theory; however stresses were found to be not in good agreement.

Three-dimensional finite-element analysis of layered composite plates

Results are presented for an investigation of the three-dimensional, geometrically nonlinear, finite-element analysis of the bending of laminated anisotropic composite plates. The individual laminae are treated as homogeneous, transversely isotropic, and linearly elastic. A fully three-dimensional isoparametric finite element with eight modes (i.e., linear element) and 24 degrees of freedom (three displacement components per node) is used. The numerical results obtained using this linear analysis are compared with the exact solutions given in Pagano (1969, 1970). It is found that the results of the linear analysis converge to the exact solution as the mesh is refined.

Buckling and vibration analysis of laminated panels using VICONOPT

The analysis aspects of the 23,000-line FORTRAN program VIPASA with constraints and optimization (VICONOPT) are described. Overall stiffness matrices assembled from the earlier exact vibration and instability of plate assemblies including shear and anisotropy (VIPASA) flat plate stiffnesses are optionally coupled by Langrangian multipliers to find critical buckling loads, or natural frequencies of undamped vibration, of prismatic assemblies of anisotropic flat plates with arbitrarily located point supports or simple transverse supporting frames. The longitudunal continuity of typical wing and fuselage panels is closely approximated because the solutions are for the infinitely long structure obtained by repeating a bay and its supports longitudinally. Any longitudinally invariant in-plane plate stresses are permitted, and very rapid solutions are guaranteed by numerous refinements, including multilevel substructuring and a method for repetitive cross sections that is exact for regular polygons used to represent cylinders. Modal displacements and stresses in or between plies of laminated plates are calculated and plotted, with values being recovered at all nodes of substructures. Comparison with usual approximate finite-element methods confirms that, for comparably converged solutions, VICONOPT is typically between 100 and 10(exp 4) times faster.

A mixed finite element for the analysis of laminated plates

A new mixed shear-flexible finite element based on the Hellinger-Reissner's variational principle is developed. The element is constructed using a mixed formulation of the shear deformation theory of laminated composite plates, and consists of three displacements, two shear rotations, and three moments as the independent degrees of freedom. The numerical convergence and accuracy characteristics of the element are investigated for bending of laminated anisotropic composite plates. The element is relatively simple to construct and has better accuracy and convergence features when compared to other conventional finite elements.

Lamb wave scattering by a surface-breaking crack in a plate

An NDE method based on finite-element representation and modal expansion has been developed for solving the scattering of Lamb waves in an elastic plate waveguide. This method is very powerful for handling discontinuities of arbitrary shape, weldments of different orientations, canted cracks, etc. The advantage of the method is that it can be used to study the scattering of Lamb waves in anisotropic elastic plates and in multilayered plates as well.
