Hierarchical quark and lepton masses with sequential U(1) gauge symmetry
Instead of right-handed neutrino singlets, the standard model is extended to include lepton triplets (Σ + , Σ 0 , Σ - ). Each quark and lepton family may now transform under an anomaly-free U(1) X gauge symmetry, known already for many years. A new sequential application is presented, using just the one Higgs doublet of the standard model, together with two U(1) X Higgs singlets. The resulting structure has hierarchical quark and lepton masses, as well as a viable seesaw neutrino mass matrix.

Estimating the color lifetime of energetic quarks
Using a simple geometric framework with a realistic nuclear density distribution, we fit published HERMES data to determine fundamental properties of hadronization using the nuclear medium as a spatial analyzer. Our approach uses a fit to the transverse momentum broadening observable and the hadronic multiplicity ratio; the simultaneous fit to two different observables strongly constrains the outcome. Using the known sizes of the target nuclei, we extract the color lifetime, finding a z h -dependent range of values from 2 to 8 fm/c for these data. We also extract estimates for the qˆ transport coefficient characterizing the strength of the interaction between the quark and the cold nuclear medium, finding an average value of 0.035±0.011 GeV 2 /fm. With a three-parameter model we obtain satisfactory fits to the data with a goodness-of-fit parameter χ 2 /dof of 1.1 or less. In a secondary fit of the results from that model we independently find a value for the Lund String Model string tension of 1.00±0.05 GeV/fm. We evaluated the sensitivity for extracting quark energy loss and effective in-medium hadronic cross sections using four-parameter variants of the model, finding large uncertainties in both cases. Our results suggest that hadronic interaction of forming hadrons in the nuclear medium is the primary dynamical cause of meson attenuation in the HERMES data, with quark energy loss playing a more minor role.

Measurement of proton electromagnetic form factors in the time-like region using initial state radiation at BESIII
The electromagnetic process e + e - → $p\bar{p}$ is studied with the initial-state-radiation technique using 7.5 fb -1 of data collected by the BESIII experiment at seven energy points from 3.773 to 4.600 GeV. The Born cross section and the effective form factor of the proton are measured from the production threshold to 3.0 GeV/c 2 using the $p\bar{p}$ invariant-mass spectrum. The ratio of electric and magnetic form factors of the proton is determined from the analysis of the proton-helicity angular distribution.
Transverse Λ polarization in e + e - collisions
In this paper we study transverse polarization of hyperons in single-inclusive leptonic annihilation. We show that when the transverse momentum of the baryon is measured with respect to the thrust axis, a transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization formalism is required and the polarization is generated by the TMD polarizing fragmentation function (TMD PFF), D 1 T ⊥ . However, when the transverse momentum of the baryon is measured with respect to the momentum of the initial leptons, a collinear twist-3 formalism is required and the polarization is generated by the intrinsic collinear twist-3 fragmentation function D T . Thus while these measurements differ from one another only by a change in the measurement axis, they probe different distribution functions. Recently, Belle measured a significant polarization in single-inclusive baryon production as a function of the transverse momentum with respect to the thrust axis. However, this data can in principle be re-analyzed to measure the polarization as a function of the transverse momentum of the baryon with respect to the lepton pair. This observable could be the first significant probe of the function, D T . In this paper, we first develop a TMD formalism for polarization; we then present a recent twist-3 formalism that was established to describe polarization. Using the TMD formalism, we demonstrate that the polarization at OPAL and Belle can be described using the twist-2 TMD factorization formalism. Finally, we make a theoretical prediction for this polarization in the collinear twist-3 formalism at Belle.
