Systematic exploration of the thermochemistry for a set of peroxy hydroperoxy-alkyl radicals

Here, the thermochemistry of peroxy hydroperoxy-alkyl ($\overline{O}$OQOOH) radicals has a significant influence on the reactivity of fuels and on the formation of highly oxygenated molecules (HOMs) in the atmosphere. Theoretical characterization of these radicals can be arduous due to their molecular size and complex fundamental interactions, such as hydrogen-bonding and torsional anharmonicity, and difficult to validate in the absence of any direct experimental thermochemical data. In this work, we systematically explore the thermochemistry of a set of $\overline{O}$OQOOH radicals with five increasingly affordable approaches with considerations for these interactions. In doing so, we present a novel conformer selection approach suited to predict properties at combustion temperatures. As a corollary, we also highlight the shortcomings in the standard choice of the ground conformer as the reference. The set of molecules is comprised of 149 C 2 -C 8 $\overline{O}$OQOOH radicals, selected to encompass a wide variety of branching and substitution patterns. Comparisons amongst the approaches help quantify the errors arising from various simplifying assumptions. For the largest of these radicals, and with the most affordable approach, final predictions of Gibbs energies are assigned a 2 σ uncertainty of 4 kcal mol -1 in the negative temperature coefficient region.

Cyclic (Alkyl)- and (Aryl)-(amino)carbene Coinage Metal Complexes and Their Applications

Cyclic (alkyl)- and (aryl)-(amino)carbenes (CAACs and CAArCs) are stronger σ-donors and π-acceptors than imidazol-2-ylidenes and imidazolidin-2-ylidenes, the well-known N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs). Consequently, they form strong bonds with coinage metals and stabilize both low and high oxidation states. This Review shows that CAACs and CAArCs have allowed for the isolation of copper and gold complexes that were believed to be only transient intermediates. Here, this has not only allowed for a better understanding of the mechanism of known processes but has also led to the development of novel coinage metal-catalyzed reactions. In addition to their role in homogeneous catalysis, CAAC and CAArC coinage metal complexes have recently found applications in medicinal chemistry, as well as in materials science. When possible, the performance of CAAC and CAArC ligands are compared with those of classical NHCs.

Structure and Magnetic Properties of Homoleptic Trivalent Tris(alkyl)lanthanides

Six new solvent-free, homoleptic paramagnetic tris(alkyl)lanthanides Ln{C(SiHMe 2 ) 3 } 3 (1Ln) and Ln{C(SiHMe 2 ) 2 Ph} 3 (2Ln) (Ln = Gd, Dy, and Er) were synthesized to investigate the magnetic properties of 4f organometallic compounds stabilized by secondary Ln←H–Si and benzylic interactions. The unit cell of 1Gd contains one independent molecule (Z = 2), while 1Dy and 1Er crystallize with four independent isostructural molecules per unit cell (Z = 16). In all molecules, as in other 1Ln compounds, the three tris(dimethylsilyl)methyl ligands form a trigonal planar LnC 3 core, and six secondary interactions involving Ln←H–Si bonding in Ln{C(SiHMe 2 ) 3 } 3 form above and below the equatorial plane. Two and five crystallographically independent molecules of each 2Ln (2Gd, Z = 8; 2Dy, Z = 20) form with three π-coordinated phenyl groups in addition to either one or two secondary Ln←H–Si interactions per molecule. The packing of these midseries organolanthanide compounds contrasts the single crystallographically unique molecules in previously reported La{C(SiHMe 2 ) 3 } 3 (1La, Z = 2, Z' = 1) and La{C(SiHMe 2 ) 2 Ph} 3 (2La, Z = 2, Z' = 1/3). 2La doped with 2Dy can adopt the crystallographic structure of 2La, which promotes magnetic properties, namely a higher χ m T value at low temperatures as well as stronger magnetic anisotropy. The ac susceptibility data for 10% 2Dy doped into 2La suggests slow relaxation at low temperatures with a relaxation barrier of ~45 K. The computed saturated magnetization of 1Er (M ≈ 4.5 μ B ) and 1Dy (M ≈ 6 μ B ) matches the experimental values, while the computed value for 2Dy better matches the value measured for 2Dy diluted in 2La (M ≈ 5 μ B ). Gas-phase calculations predict that the ground-state and first excited-state multiplet separations are larger for 1Er than 2Er, while the ordering for dysprosium is 1Dy > 2Dy.

Probing the Redox Reactivity of Alkyl Bound Astatine: A Study on the Formation and Cleavage of a Stable At–C Bond

The formation of a stable alkyl At–C bond occurs during the shipment of 211 At on a 3-octanone-impregnated column and the reactivity of 211 At stripped from columns has been studied. The 211 At could not be recovered from the 3-octanone organic phase using nitric acid or sodium hydroxide, even up to 10 and 15.7 M, respectively. Several reducing and oxidizing agents, including hydrazine, hydroxylamine, ascorbic acid, ceric ammonium nitrate, potassium permanganate, sodium hypochlorite, and calcium hypochlorite were used to promote the recovery of 211 At. The most effective reducing agent was hydroxylamine, where ~70% of the 211 At was recovered, while among oxidizing agents ceric ammonium nitrate, potassium permanganate, and sodium hypochlorite all showed near quantitative recovery of 211 At. These results indicate an At–C bond is being formed during the shipment of the column and a redox reaction is required for bond cleavage to occur. Furthermore, DFT calculations have been used to propose several products of an AtO + -3-octanone reaction, with 4-astato-5-hydroxy-octa-3-one being the most probable.

How Do Ionic Liquids “Fold” Ionenes? Computational and Experimental Analysis of Imidazolium Polymers Based on Ether and Alkyl Chain Variations Dissolved in an Ionic Liquid

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and complementary experiments are used here to understand the inter- and intramolecular structure and conformational properties of ionenes (i.e., cationic polymers formed from condensation reactions) dissolved in an ionic liquid (IL), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bistriflimide [C 2 mim + ][Tf 2 N - ]. The simulated structural properties are benchmarked against experimental analyses of these same polymers, mainly using dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments. Four different imidazolium ionenes are considered, corresponding to variations in the chemistry and structure of the repeat units including: (1) poly (decylimidazolium) (PD 10 ); (2) poly (tetraethyleneglycolimidazolium) (PE 10 ); (3) alternating copolymer (P(ED) 5 ); and (4) a block copolymer (PE 5 D 5 ). Detailed computational analyses of the polymer structure and conformational properties were performed, including the radius of gyration, end-to-end distance, torsional distributions, and site-site and spatial distribution functions. Overall, there is a competition between intramolecular associations between the imidazolium groups and the ether sites in the polymers versus the intermolecular interactions of the polymer imidazolium groups with the surrounding anion molecules. The polymer with only ether linkages (PE 10 ) results in the most intramolecular interactions, leading to significant coiling behavior and chain contraction. These strong interactions reduce chain flexibility, but they also result in much more linear chain configurations and alignment of the imidazolium groups. The polymer structure is strongly affected as the concentration of alkyl groups is increased, and we find that the polymer architecture (alternating versus block copolymer) also has an important influence. Furthermore, these detailed observations are important for understanding the connection between the molecular design of imidazolium polymers and their emergent structural properties, which could lead to unique opportunities for creating polymer composites.

Alkyl-Substituted Polycaprolactone Poly(urethane-urea)s as Mechanically Competitive and Chemically Recyclable Materials

We report the mechanical performance and chemical recycling advantages of implementing alkyl-substituted poly(ε-caprolactones) (PCLs) as soft segments in thermoplastic poly(urethane-urea) (TPUU) materials. Poly(4-methylcaprolactone) (P4MCL) and poly(4-propylcaprolactone) (P4PrCL) were prepared, reacted with isophorone diisocyanate, and chain-extended with water to form TPUUs. The resulting materials’ tensile properties were similar or superior to a commercially available polyester thermoplastic poly(urethane) and had superior elastic recovery properties compared to a PCL analogue due to the noncrystalline nature of P4MCL and P4PrCL. Additionally, monomers were recovered from the TPUU materials in high yields via ring-closing depolymerization using a reactive distillation approach at an elevated temperature and a reduced pressure (240–260 °C, 25–140 mTorr) with zinc chloride (ZnCl 2 ) as the catalyst. The thermodynamics of polymerization were estimated using Van’t Hoff analyses for 4MCL and 4PrCL; these results indicated that the propyl group in 4PrCL results in a lower practical ceiling temperature (T c ) for P4PrCL.

An Enzymatic Platform for Primary Amination of 1-Aryl-2-alkyl Alkynes

Propargyl amines are versatile synthetic intermediates with numerous applications in the pharmaceutical industry. An attractive strategy for efficient preparation of these compounds is nitrene propargylic C(sp 3 )–H insertion. However, achieving this reaction with good chemo-, regio-, and enantioselective control has proven to be challenging. Here, we report an enzymatic platform for the enantioselective propargylic amination of alkynes using a hydroxylamine derivative as the nitrene precursor. Cytochrome P450 variant PA-G8 catalyzing this transformation was identified after eight rounds of directed evolution. A variety of 1-aryl-2-alkyl alkynes are accepted by PA G8, including those bearing heteroaromatic rings. This biocatalytic process is efficient and selective (up to 2610 total turnover number (TTN) and 96% ee) and can be performed on preparative scale.

Alkyl decorated metal–organic frameworks for selective trapping of ethane from ethylene above ambient pressures

Here the trapping of paraffins is beneficial compared to selective olefin adsorption for adsorptive olefin purification from a process engineering point of view. Here we demonstrate the use of a series of Zn 2 (X-bdc) 2 (dabco) (where X-bdc 2- is bdc 2- = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate with substituting groups X, DM-bdc 2- = 2,5-dimethyl-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate or TM-bdc 2- = 2,3,5,6-tetramethyl-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate and dabco = diazabicyclo[2.2.2.]octane) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for the adsorptive removal of ethane from ethylene streams. The best performing material from this series is Zn2(TM-bdc)2(dabco) (DMOF-TM), which shows a high ethane uptake of 5.31 mmol g -1 at 110 kPa, with a good IAST selectivity of 1.88 towards ethane over ethylene. Through breakthrough measurements a high productivity of 13.1 L/kg per breakthrough is revealed with good reproducibility over five consecutive cycles. Molecular simulations show that the methyl groups of DMOF-TM are forming a van der Waals trap with the methylene groups from dabco, snuggly fitting the ethane. Further, rarely used high pressure coadsorption measurements, in pressure regimes that most scientific studies on hydrocarbon separation on MOFs ignore, reveal an increase in ethane capacity and selectivity for binary mixtures with increased pressures. The coadsorption measurements reveal good selectivity of 1.96 at 1000 kPa, which is verified also through IAST calculations up to 3000 kPa. This study overall showcases the opportunities that pore engineering by alkyl group incorporation and pressure increase offer to improve hydrocarbon separation in reticular materials.

Regiospecific N -alkyl substitution tunes the molecular packing of high-performance non-fullerene acceptors

The rapid development of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) with strong near-infrared absorption has led to remarkably enhanced short-circuit current density (J sc ) values in organic solar cells (OSCs). NFAs based on the benzotriazole (Bz) fused-ring π-core have great potential in delivering both high J sc and decent open-circuit voltage values due to their strong intramolecular charge transfer with reasonably low energy loss. Here in this work, we have designed and synthesized a series of Bz-based NFAs, PN6SBO-4F, AN6SBO-4F and EHN6SEH-4F, via regiospecific N-alkyl engineering based on the high-performance NFA mBzS-4F that was reported previously. The molecular packing of mBzS-4F, AN6SBO-4F, and EHN6SEH-4F single crystals was analyzed using X-ray crystallography in order to provide a comprehensive understanding of the correlation between the molecular structure, the charge-transporting properties, and the solar cell performance. Compared with the typical honeycomb single-crystal structure of Y6 derivatives, these NFAs exhibit distinctly different molecular packing patterns. The strong interactions of terminal indanone groups in mBzS-4F and the J-aggregate-like packing in EHN6SEH-4F lead to the formation of ordered 3D networks in single-crystals with channels for efficient charge transport. Consequently, OSCs based on mBzS-4F and EHN6SEH-4F show efficient photon-to-current conversions, achieving the highest power conversion efficiency of 17.48% with a Jsc of 28.83 mA cm -2 .

Cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene ruthenium complexes for Z -stereoselective (asymmetric) olefin metathesis

The first Z-stereoselective catechodithiolate ruthenium complexes containing cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene ligands are reported. Isolated in nearly quantitative yields or in situ generated, these catalysts demonstrated remarkable Z selectivity (Z/E ratio up to >98/2) in ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), ring-opening-cross metathesis (ROCM) and cross-metathesis (CM). Thanks to the efficient chiral HPLC resolution of racemic CAAC-complex precursors, optically pure dithiolated complexes were also synthesized allowing to produce enantioenriched Z-ROCM products in >99/1 Z/E with good levels of enantioselectivity.

Microstructure and heteroatom dictate the doping mechanism and thermoelectric properties of poly(alkyl-chalcogenophenes)

Heteroatom substitution can favorably alter electronic transport in conductive polymers to improve their thermoelectric performance. Here we report the spectroscopic, structural, and thermoelectric properties of poly(3–(3',7'-dimethyloctyl) chalcogenophenes) or P3RX doped with 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4TCNQ), where the heteroatom [X = thiophene (T), selenophene (Se), tellurophene (Te)], the doping methodology, and extent of doping are systematically varied. Spectroscopic measurements reveal that while all P3RX polymers are appreciably doped, the doping mechanism is inherently different. Poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT, used as a control) and poly(3–(3',7'-dimethyloctyl)tellurophene) (P3RTe) are doped primarily via integer charge transfer (ICT), whereas poly(3–(3',7'-dimethyloctyl)selenophene) (P3RSe) and poly(3–(3',7'-dimethyloctyl)thiophene) (P3RT) are doped via charge transfer complex (CTC) mechanisms. Despite these differences, all polymers saturate with roughly the same number of F4TCNQ counterions (1 dopant per 4 to 6 heterocycles), reinforcing the idea that the extent of charge transfer varies with the doping mechanism. Grazing incidence wide-angle x-ray scattering measurements provide insight into the structural driving forces behind different doping mechanisms—P3RT and P3RSe have similar microstructures in which F4TCNQ intercalates between the π-stacked backbones resulting in CTC doping (localized carriers), while P3HT and P3RTe have microstructures in which F4TCNQ intercalates in the alkyl side chain region, giving rise to ICT doping (delocalized carriers). These structural and spectroscopic observations shed light on why P3HT and P3RTe obtain electrical conductivities ca. 3 S/cm, while P3RT and P3RSe have conductivities <10–3 S/cm under the same thin film processing conditions. Ultimately, this work quantifies the effects of heteroatom, microstructural ordering, extent of doping, and doping mechanism, thereby providing rational guidance for designing future thermoelectric polymer-dopant systems.

Conical intersection and coherent vibrational dynamics in alkyl iodides captured by attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy

The photodissociation dynamics of alkyl iodides along the C–I bond are captured by attosecond extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) transient absorption spectroscopy employing resonant ∼20 fs UV pump pulses. The methodology of previous experiments on CH3I [Chang et al., J. Chem. Phys. 154, 234301 (2021)] is extended to the investigation of a C–I bond-breaking reaction in the dissociative A-band of C2H5I, i-C3H7I, and t-C4H9I. Probing iodine 4d core-to-valence transitions in the XUV enables one to map wave packet bifurcation at a conical intersection in the A-band as well as coherent vibrations in the ground state of the parent molecules. Analysis of spectroscopic bifurcation signatures yields conical intersection crossing times of 15 ± 4 fs for CH3I, 14 ± 5 fs for C2H5I, and 24 ± 4 fs for i-C3H7I and t-C4H9I, respectively. Observations of coherent vibrations, resulting from a projection of A-band structural dynamics onto the ground state by resonant impulsive stimulated Raman scattering, indirectly reveal multimode C–I stretch and CCI bend vibrations in the A-bands of C2H5I, i-C3H7I, and t-C4H9I.

The multichannel i -propyl + O2 reaction system: A model of secondary alkyl radical oxidation

The i-propyl + O2 reaction mechanism has been investigated by definitive quantum chemical methods to establish this system as a benchmark for the combustion of secondary alkyl radicals. Focal point analyses extrapolating to the ab initio limit were performed based on explicit computations with electron correlation treatments through coupled cluster single, double, triple, and quadruple excitations and basis sets up to cc-pV5Z. The rigorous coupled cluster single, double, and triple excitations/cc-pVTZ level of theory was used to fully optimize all reaction species and transition states, thus, removing some substantial flaws in reference geometries existing in the literature. The vital i-propylperoxy radical (MIN1) and its concerted elimination transition state (TS1) were found 34.8 and 4.4 kcal mol−1 below the reactants, respectively. Two β-hydrogen transfer transition states (TS2, TS2′) lie above the reactants by (1.4, 2.5) kcal mol−1 and display large Born–Oppenheimer diagonal corrections indicative of nearby surface crossings. An α-hydrogen transfer transition state (TS5) is discovered 5.7 kcal mol−1 above the reactants that bifurcates into equivalent α-peroxy radical hanging wells (MIN3) prior to a highly exothermic dissociation into acetone + OH. The reverse TS5 → MIN1 intrinsic reaction path also displays fascinating features, including another bifurcation and a conical intersection of potential energy surfaces. An exhaustive conformational search of two hydroperoxypropyl (QOOH) intermediates (MIN2 and MIN3) of the i-propyl + O2 system located nine rotamers within 0.9 kcal mol−1 of the corresponding lowest-energy minima.

NEXAFS spectroscopy of alkylated benzothienobenzothiophene thin films at the carbon and sulfur K-edges

Alkylated benzothienobenzothiophenes are an important class of organic semiconductors that exhibit high performance in solution-processed organic field-effect transistors. In this work, we study the near-edge x-ray absorption fine-structure (NEXAFS) spectra of 2,7-didecyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (C 10 -BTBT) at both the carbon and sulfur K-edges. Angle-resolved experiments of thin films are performed to characterize the dichroism associated with molecular orientation. First-principles calculations using the density functional theory-based many-body x-ray absorption spectroscopy (MBXAS) method are also performed to correlate the peaks observed and their dichroism with transitions to specific antibonding molecular orbitals. Interestingly, the dichroism of the dominant, lowest energy peak is opposite at the carbon and sulfur K-edges. While the low-energy peak at the carbon K-edge is assigned to carbon 1s → π* transitions with transition dipole moment (TDM) perpendicular to the planar BTBT core, the dominant low energy peak at the sulfur K-edge is assigned to sulfur 1s → σ* transitions with TDM oriented along the long axis of the BTBT core. These differences at the sulfur and carbon K-edges are understood through the MBAXS simulations that find a reordering of the energy of the lowest energy π* and σ* transitions at the sulfur K-edge due to the strong localization of the σ* orbital over the sulfur atom. This work highlights differences in the NEXAFS spectra of organic semiconductors at carbon and sulfur K-edges and provides new insights into peak assignment and x-ray dichroism relevant for studying the molecular orientation of organic semiconductor films.

Al-alkyls as acceptor dopant precursors for atomic-scale devices

Atomically precise ultradoping of silicon is possible with atomic resists, area-selective surface chemistry, and a limited set of hydride and halide precursor molecules, in a process known as atomic precision advanced manufacturing (APAM). It is desirable to expand this set of precursors to include dopants with organic functional groups and in this work we consider aluminium alkyls, to expand the applicability of APAM. We explore the impurity content and selectivity that results from using trimethyl aluminium and triethyl aluminium precursors on Si(001) to ultradope with aluminium through a hydrogen mask. Comparison of the methylated and ethylated precursors helps us understand the impact of hydrocarbon ligand selection on incorporation surface chemistry. Combining scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory calculations, we assess the limitations of both classes of precursor and extract general principles relevant to each.
