From ammonium Hexahalorhenates(IV) to nanocrystalline rhenium metal: A combined thermal, diffraction and microscopic analysis

Rhenium metal powder is a material of industrial importance. Several industrial and laboratory methods have been developed for the preparation of ultrafine Re metal powder and nanoparticles. The present study provides a better understanding of the characteristic and formation of Re metal powder from the decomposition of (NH4)2ReX6 salt (X = F, Cl, Br, I) at high temperature in inert atmosphere. Such analysis resulted in the formation of nanocrystalline Re metal as characterized by powder XRD. Williamson-Hall, Scherrer, and Williamson-Smallman methods were employed to study the effect of crystallize size, lattice strain, and dislocation density as analyzed from powder XRD peak broadening. Here, the morphology and composition of the metal were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy.

Anion-exchanged and quaternary ammonium functionalized MIL-101-Cr metal-organic framework (MOF) for ReO 4 – /TcO 4 – sequestration from groundwater

There are few effective technologies for the sequestration of highly water-soluble pertechnetate (TcO 4 – ) from contaminated water despite the urgency of environmental and public health concerns. Here, anion exchanged and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) functionalized MIL-101-Cr-NO 3 were investigated for perrhenate (ReO 4 – ), a surrogate of TcO 4 – , sequestration from artificial groundwater. Cl – , I – , and CF 3 SO 3 – exchanged MIL-101-Cr proved more effective at ReO 4 – removal than the parent MIL-101-Cr-F. Compared to the parent framework, CTAB functionalized MIL-101-Cr-NO 3 increased ReO 4 – removal capacity from 39 to 139 mg/g, improved the reaction kinetics from ~30 to <10 min to reach full adsorption capacity and the selectivity for ReO 4 – over competing NO 3 – , CO 3 2– , SO 4 2– , and Cl – . Spectroscopic data indicated that the chemical speciation of Re in the exchanged MIL-101-Cr remained ReO 4 – , indicating synergistic sequestration through both anion exchange and non-ion exchange binding with the positively charged ligand of CTAB. These studies foreshadow potential applications of MOFs for the remediation of 99 TcO 4 – from contaminated environments.

Oxygen-deficient ammonium vanadate for flexible aqueous zinc batteries with high energy density and rate capability at -30 °C

Aqueous zinc batteries (AZBs) have received significant attention owing to environmental friendliness, high energy density and inherent safety. However, lack of high-performance cathodes has become the main bottleneck of AZBs development. Here, oxygen-deficient NH 4 V 4 O 10–x ·nH 2 O (NVOH) microspheres are synthesized and used as cathodes for AZBs. The experimental test and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the oxygen vacancies in the lattice lower the Zn 2+ diffusion energy barrier, which enables fast Zn 2+ diffusion and good electrochemical performance in a wide temperature range. The suppressed side reactions also can help to improve the low temperature performance. NVOH shows a high energy density of 372.4 Wh kg –1 and 296 Wh kg –1 at room temperature and –30 °C, respectively. Moreover, NVOH maintains a 100% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g –1 and ~94% capacity retention after 2600 cycles at 2 A g –1 and –30 °C. Investigation into the mechanism of the process reveals that the capacity contribution of surface capacitive behaviors is dominant and capacity attenuation is mainly caused by the decay of diffusion-controlled capacity. As a result, flexible AZBs can steadily power portable electronics under different bending states, demonstrating its great potential in wide-temperature wearable device.

Energetic Insights into the Role of Quaternary Ammonium Cations in Zeolite Synthesis

The thermodynamics of partitioning of an organic structure-directing agent (OSDA) between water and an organic solvent such as chloroform or trichloroethane serve as a proxy for energetic interactions during zeolite synthesis. Using several newly synthesized OSDAs, we have extended our earlier calorimetric and partitioning studies of the thermodynamics of transfer to separate effects of charge (C/N + ratio) and structure in a series of structurally related OSDAs. The Gibbs free energies of transfer are close to zero, resulting from a balance of strongly exothermic and relatively similar enthalpies and strongly negative and relatively similar entropies of transfer. There is no obvious correlation between the thermodynamics of transfer and the efficacy of a given OSDA in the zeolite synthesis. Finally, one must conclude that with bulk energetics of transfer being similar in most cases studied, the critical factors in OSDA function in zeolite synthesis are kinetically rather than thermodynamically controlled and arise from differences in activation energies related to details of OSDA structure and interactions during nucleation of possible zeolite precursors.

Corrosion and Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution in Electrochemical Reduction of Ammonium Carbamate on Transition Metal Surfaces

Experiments and theory are combined to search for catalyst activity and stability descriptors for the direct reactive capture and conversion (RCC) of CO 2 in ammonia capture solutions using Cu, Ag, Au, Sn, and Ti electrodes. Two major phenomena emerge in RCC that are not predominant in the electrochemical CO 2 reduction (CO 2 R) reaction, namely, the rapid corrosion and restructuring of the catalyst in the presence of the CO 2 -ammonia adducts and the promotion of the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The prevalence of HER in RCC is correlated to the electrostatic attraction of the protonated amine to the electrode and the repulsion of the captured CO 2 , using the potential of zero charge (PZC). The stability of catalysts under RCC conditions is a function of the applied potential and cannot be readily predicted using binding energy descriptors commonly used in the prediction of CO 2 R activity. Finally, a direct correlation between calculated binding energies of CO 2 R intermediates, atomic oxygen, hydrogen, and ammonia and the activity and stability of transition metals for RCC cannot be found, highlighting the need for descriptors beyond those known for CO 2 R.
