Multikilowatt hydrogen-nickel oxide battery system

The potential of the H2-NiO battery for terrestrial applications was assessed. A multicell design approach that differs significantly from the aerospace individual pressure vessel was used. A number of experimental 100-Ah cells were built to evaluate the new design concepts and components. The experimental cells provided the input needed for a multicell battery design. It is found that new multicell H2-NiO battery has a number of potential advantages for aerospace applications such as the manned space station. The advantages are discussed, and a design concept is presented for a multikilowatt battery in a lightweight pressure vessel.

Progress in electrochemical storage for battery systems

Efforts to improve electrochemical systems for space use relate to: (1) improvement of conventional systems; (2) development of fuel cells to practical power systems; and (3) a search for new systems that provide gains in energy density but offer comparable life and performance as conventional systems. Improvements in sealed conventional systems resulted in the areas of materials, charge control methods, cell operations and battery control, and specific process controls required during cell manufacture. Fuel-cell systems have been developed for spacecraft but the use of these power plants is limited. For present and planned flights, nickel-cadmium, silver-zinc, and silver-cadmium systems will be used. Improvements in nickel-cadmium batteries have been applied in medical and commercial areas.

Galileo probe battery systems design

NASA's Galileo mission to Jupiter will consist of a Jovian orbiter and an atmospheric entry probe. The power for the probe will be derived from two primary power sources. The main source is composed of three Li-SO2 battery modules containing 13 D-size cell strings per module. These are required to retain capacity for 7.5 years, support a 150 day clock, and a 7 hour mission sequence of increasing loads from 0.15 to 9.5 amperes for the last 30 minutes. This main power source is supplemented by two thermal batteries (CaCrO4-Ca) for use in firing the pyrotechnic initiators during the atmospheric staging events. This paper describes design development and testing of these batteries at the system level.

Investigation of neutron noise in a micro-scale, natural circulation molten salt fission battery system

The Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) concept is a rapidly evolving Generation IV design that has recently attracted favorable attention due to the potential for reducing waste generation, realizing passive safety features, and seizing on the opportunity for cost effective economics. A specific novel micro-MSR, natural circulation, battery design concept involves placing all primary components within a single reactor vessel containment without the need of primary forced pumping. This small modular, integral design presents potential cost savings while producing safety, reliable, and transportable carbon-free power for decades. This investigation evaluates the neutron noise induced by density and flow fluctuations in a natural circulation MSR battery concept being developed at the University of Idaho. This study finds numerical solutions to the one-dimensional, one-group, coupled diffusion equations for a bare, homogeneous core, and evaluates neutron flux and delayed neutron precursor concentration noise due to core flow and fuel salt density perturbation sources. Noise analysis shows both point kinetic and space-dependent behavior is present despite the small size, low-flow, closely-coupled nature of the natural circulation MSR concept. Analysis shows that the low flow of the convective system results in noise behavior typically representative of a larger forced-circulation MSR system. Finally, noise techniques may also be useful in MSR core diagnostics as a non-invasive, low-cost radiological option to traditional monitoring schemes.

Experimental considerations and applications for time-resolved impedance on silicon-anode battery systems

Dynamic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (dEIS) utilizes a superimposed multi-sinusoidal waveform and enables temporally resolved investigations on various electrochemical processes; however, the signal-to-noise ratio must be maximized while retaining linearity and stationarity within the system. In the present work, we probe the impact of the waveform’s total amplitude as well as the waveform and phase profiles. The equal amplitude multi-sinusoidal waveform with 35 mV total amplitude (<1 mV per frequency) and random phase profile exhibits the lowest impedance noise. This input signal is sufficient in avoiding the high frequency signal attenuation from the potentiostat’s low-pass filter. Additionally, we demonstrate the optimized dEIS waveform’s utility in investigating surface passivation within thin-film and composite silicon (Si) anodes. Within a two-electrode Si-lithium metal coin cell, the charge transfer resistance (RCT) associated with alloying kinetics dominates the overall impedance. RCT increases with state of charge indicating a kinetic bottleneck at higher lithiation states. To explore this further, we utilize a three-electrode Si-LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 pouch cell to deconvolute the Si impedance contributions. The evolution of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and charge transfer resistances correlate to specific Li–Si alloy phases. We attribute this to the influence of Si particle volume expansion on SEI instabilities and a kinetic bottleneck at higher lithiation states.

Study of the zinc-silver oxide battery system

Theoretical and experimental models for the evaluation of current distribution in flooded, porous electrodes are discussed. An approximation for the local current distribution function was derived for conditions of a linear overpotential, a uniform concentration, and a very conductive matrix. By considering the porous electrode to be an analog of chemical catalyst structures, a dimensionless performance parameter was derived from the approximated current distribution function. In this manner the electrode behavior was characterized in terms of an electrochemical Thiele parameter and an effectiveness factor. It was shown that the electrochemical engineering approach makes possible the organizations of theoretical descriptions and of practical experience in the form of dimensionless parameters, such as the electrochemical Thiele parameters, and hence provides useful information for the design of new electrochemical systems.
