Tree Tops Site - Halo Streamline Scanning Lidar High-Frequency Wind Profile / Derived data

This dataset contains wind profiles retrieved from 6-beam Velocity Azimuth Display (VAD) scans done by a Streamline XR Doppler Lidar operated by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and deployed at the Tree Tops site (1.5 km South-West of MLBS site). The wind components (expressed as zonal, meridional and vertical) are retrieved through the algorithm of Paschke et al. (2015). The quality control of the radial wind speed is performed following the algorithm of Foken et al. (2004).

photoD with Rubin ’s Data Preview 1: First stellar photometric distances and faint blue star deficits

Aims. We investigate the utility of Rubin’s Data Preview 1 (DP1) for estimating stellar number density profiles across the Milky Way halo. Methods. We used stellar broad-band near-UV to near-IR ugrizy photometry released in Rubin’s DP1 to estimate distance and metallicity for blue main sequence stars brighter than r = 24 in three ~1.1 sq. deg. fields at southern Galactic latitudes. Results. Compared to TRILEGAL simulations of the Galaxy’s stellar content, we found a likely deficit of blue main sequence turn-off stars with 22 < r < 24. We interpreted this discrepancy as a signature of a steeper halo number density profile at galactocentric distances 10–50 kpc than the canonical ~1/r 3 profile assumed in TRILEGAL simulations. Conclusions. This interpretation is consistent with earlier suggestions based on observations of more luminous, but much less numerous, evolved stellar populations, along with a few pencil beam surveys of blue main sequence stars in the northern sky. These results bode well for the future Galactic halo exploration with Rubin’s Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST).

ULTRAFAST HIGH-VOLTAGE KICKER SYSTEM HARDWARE FOR ION CLEARING GAPS

Ionization scattering of electron beams with residual gas molecules causes ion trapping in electron rings, both in a collider and electron cooling system. These trapped ions may cause emittance growth, tune shift, halo formation, and coherent coupled bunch instabilities. To clear the ions and prevent them from accumulating turn after turn, the gaps in a temporal structure of the beam are used. Typi- cally, the gap in the bunch train has a length of a few per- cent of the ring circumference. In those regions, the extrac- tion electrodes with high pulsed voltages are introduced. In this paper, we present the design consideration and initial test results of the high-voltage pulsed kicker hardware that includes vacuum device and pulsed voltage driver, capable of achieving over 3 kV of deflecting voltage amplitude, rise and fall times of less than 10 ns, 100 ns flat-top duration at 1.4 MHz repetition rate.

TRACER CLAMPS2 Doppler Lidar Vertical Stare Data

These files contain 24 hour periods of data collected from the CLAMPS2 Halo Streamline XR+ Doppler lidar. While not conducting other scans, the lidar directs the beam to zenith, allowing for the measurement of vertical velocity. These data were collected during the TRACER project.

Ultrafast High-Voltage Kicker System for Ion-Clearing Gaps

Ionization scattering of electron beams with residual gas molecules causes ion trapping in electron rings, both in a collider and electron cooling system. These trapped ions may cause emittance growth, tune shift, halo formation, and coherent coupled bunch instabilities. In order to clear the ions and prevent them from accumulating turn after turn, the gaps in a temporal structure of the beam are typically used. Typically, the gap in the bunch train has a length of a few percent of the ring circumference. In those regions, the extraction electrodes with high pulsed voltages are introduced.

Dark Matter Candidates of a Very Low Mass

We review dark matter (DM) candidates of a very low mass appearing in the window below the traditional weakly interacting massive particle (m χ ≲ 10 GeV) and extending down to m χ ≳ 1 meV, somewhat below the mass limit at which DM becomes wavelike. Such candidates are motivated by hidden sectors such as hidden valleys, which feature hidden forces and rich dynamics, but have evaded traditional accelerator searches for New Physics because of their relatively weak coupling to the Standard Model (SM). Such sectors can still be detected through dedicated low-energy colliders, which, through their intense beams, can have sensitivity to smaller couplings, or through astrophysical observations of the evolution of DM halos and stellar structures, which, through the Universe's epochs, can be sensitive to small DM interactions. We also consider mechanisms whereby the DM abundance is fixed through the interaction with the SM, which directly motivates the search for light DM in terrestrial experiments. The bulk of this review is dedicated to the new ideas that have been proposed for direct detection of such DM candidates of a low mass through nuclear recoils, electronic excitations, or collective modes such as phonons and magnons. The rich tapestry of materials and modes in the condensed matter landscape is reviewed along with specific prospects for detection.
