Nonlinear Drift-Kinetic Equation in the Presence of a Circularly Polarized Wave

Equations of the single particle motion and nonlinear kinetic equation for plasma in the presence of a circularly polarized wave of arbitrary frequency in the drift approximation are presented. The nonstationarity and inhomogeneity of the plasma-wave system are taken into account. The time dependent part of the ponderomotive force is discussed.

Circularly Polarized Antenna with Wide Projection and Range: A Concept

The slotted antenna structure discussed in this tech brief radiates a circularly polarized beam pattern over a wide angle. The basic structure, composed of waveguide slots, can be flush mounted in an airplane or spacecraft, and could be used in the communication link between an airplane and an air traffic satellite.

Circularly polarized antennas with controlled radiation patterns

Log-helix conical antennas were examined as a way to satisfy the requirement for circular polarization of antennas for spacecraft use. It was concluded that a multiple-helix antenna which allows the helix lead angle to be changed can be used when the radiation and directivity in the direction of the reception point must be changed during flight.

Asymmetric photolysis of /RS/-leucine with circularly polarized ultraviolet light

(RS)-leucine in 0.1 M HCl solution has been subjected to photolysis with 212.8-nm right (R-) and left circularly polarized light (LCPL) obtained from a laser source. RCPL preferentially photolyzed the (R)-leucine component and LCPL the (S)-leucine component of the RS substrate. The enantiomeric excess produced were 1.98% for the 59% conversion with RCPL and 2.50% for the 75% conversion with LCPL. These 'equal and opposite' effects represent the second highest enantiomeric enrichments yet reported for an asymmetric photolysis and the first ever reported for a prebiotically important substrate - an amino acid. Implications regarding the origin of optical activity are briefly discussed.

Suspended Patch Antennas With Electromagnetically Coupled Inverted Microstrip Feed for Circular Polarization

The paper demonstrates a suspended nearly square patch antenna with offset feed and a square patch antenna with truncated corners for circular polarization. The antennas are excited by an electromagnetically coupled inverted microstrip feed. In addition a new transition between conventional microstrip and inverted microstrip is proposed. The measured results include the axial ratio and the impedance bandwidth of the antennas.

Nonlinear evolution of a large-amplitude circularly polarized Alfven wave: High beta

The nonlinear dynamics following saturation of the parametric instabilities of a monochromatic field-aligned large-amplitude circularly polarized Alfven wave is investigated via direct numerical simulation in the case of high plasma beta and no wave dispersion. The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) code permits nonlinear couplings in the parallel direction to the ambient magnetic field and one perpendicular direction. Compressibility is included in the form of a polytropic equation of state. Turbulent cascades develop after saturation of two coupled oblique three-wave parametric instabilities; one of which is an oblique filamentationlike instability reported earlier. Remnants of the parametric processes, as well as of the original Alfven pump wave, persist during late nonlinear times. Nearly incompressible MHD features such as spectral anisotropies appear as well.

Nonlinear evolution of a large-amplitude circularly polarized Alfven wave: Low beta

The nature of turbulent cascades arising from the parametric instabilities of a monochromatic field-aligned large-amplitude circularly polarized Alfven wave is investigated via direct numerical simulation for the case of low plasma Beta and no wave dispersion. The magnetohydrodynamic code permits nonlinear couplings in the parallel direction to the ambient magnetic field and one perpendicular direction. Compressibility is included in the form of a polytropic equation of state. Anisotropic turbulent cascades, similar to those found in early incompressible two-dimensional simulations, occur after nonlinear saturation of the parallel propagating decay instability. The turbulent spectrum can be divided into three regimes: the lowest wave numbers are dominated by lower sideband remnants of the parametric process, intermediate wave numbers display nearly incompressible dynamics, and the highest wave numbers are dominated by acoustic turbulence.

Reconfigurable Wideband Circularly Polarized Stacked Square Patch Antenna for Cognitive Radios

An almost square patch, a square patch and a stacked square patch with corner truncation for circular polarization (CP) are researched and developed at X-band for cognitive radios. Experimental results indicate, first, that the impedance bandwidth of a CP almost square patch fed from the edge by a 50 ohm line is 1.70% and second, that of a CP square patch fed from the ground plane side by a surface launch connector is 1.87%. Third, the impedance bandwidth of a CP stacked square patch fed by a surface launch connector is 2.22%. The measured center frequency for the CP square patch fed by a surface launch connector without and with an identical stacked patch is 8.45 and 8.1017 GHz, respectively. By stacking a patch, separated by a fixed air gap of 0.254 mm, the center frequency is observed to shift by as much as 348.3 MHz. The shift in center frequency, brought about by the reconfiguring of the physical layer antenna, can be exploited in a cognitive system since it expands the usable frequency spectrum for software reconfiguration in the presence of interference. In addition, varying the fixed air gap in the stacked antenna geometry by increments of 0.254 mm further expands the usable frequency spectrum.

An almost square patch, a square patch and a stacked square patch with corner truncation for circular polarization (CP) are researched and developed at X-band for cognitive radios. Experimental results indicate, first, that the impedance bandwidth of a CP almost square patch fed from the edge by a 50 ohm line is 1.70 percent and second, that of a CP square patch fed from the ground plane side by a surface launch connector is 1.87 percent. Third, the impedance bandwidth of a CP stacked square patch fed by a surface launch connector is 2.22 percent. The shift in the center frequency can be exploited to reconfigure the operating frequency by mechanically increasing the air gap. The results indicate that a tuning bandwidth of about 100 MHz can be achieved when the distance of separation between the driven patch and the stacked patch is increased from its initial setting of 0.254 to 1.016 mm.

Mechanisms for the circular polarization of astrophysical OH masers in star-forming regions and the inferred magnetic fields

Results of further calculations to explore the cause for the circular polarization of astrophysical OH masers in regions of star formation are presented. Calculations are given for both the nonlinear, Zeeman overlap mechanishm, and the Cook mechanism. The previous result that magnetic field strengths of a few milligauss or greater are required, still survives.

Discovery of interstellar circular polarization in the direction of the Crab Nebula.

A search in many small regions of the Crab Nebula has resulted in the detection of a small component of circular polarization. The variation of the sign and magnitude with position in the Nebula indicates that the polarization is of interstellar origin. On the basis of the polarity, strength, and colour dependence, it is concluded that the composition of the aligned grains causing this polarization is dielectric. Metallic particles are clearly ruled out. Some stars have also been observed with negative results.

New measurements of circular polarization and an ephemeris for the variable white dwarf G195-19.

Observations of the white dwarf G195-19 made for over a year show that the periodic variation in circular polarization continues with constant frequency and amplitude; an accurate value of 1.3309 plus or minus 0.0004 days is obtained for the period. While the variation in blue-green light is sinusoidal, extensive measurements in red light show an asymmetric curve, reaching a minimum about 6 hours earlier than in the blue-green.

Parametric instabilities of circularly polarized Alfven waves in high-beta plasmas

CGL relations including the effect of finite ion Larmor radius are used to consider a class of parametric instabilities of finite-amplitude, circularly polarized Alfven waves in high-beta plasmas. The disperison relation governing the instabilities is a sixth-order polynomial which is solved numerically. There are two types of instabilities: a modulational instability at k is less than k(0) and a relatively weak and narrow bandwidth instability at k is less than approximately k(0), where k and k(0) are the wavenumbers of the unstable density fluctuation and the 'pump' wave, respectively. It is shown that these instabilities can occur for left-handed pump waves and that the modulational instability is unstable over a very broad band in k with a maximum growth rate at finite k is not equal to 0.
