Means for mapping radiated fields and for measuring differential movement of antenna elements

Null seeking system uses two transponders located at selected points on dish to detect phase-front of received signal. One signal line has continuously variable phase shifter driven by reversible stepmotor. Each of two transponders on dish is a dipole with mixer crystal between elements. Crystal is driven, in turn, by 181.6MHz signal carried by miniature coaxial cable.

Circuit Methods for VLF Antenna Couplers

The limitations of different E-field antenna coupler or preamplifier circuits are presented. All circuits were evaluated using actual Loran or Omega signals. Electric field whip or wire antennas are the simplest types which can be used for reception of VLF signals in the 10 to 100 kHz range. JFET or MOSFET transistors provide impedance transformation and some voltage gain in simple circuits where the power for operating the preamplifier uses the same coaxial cable that feeds the signal back to the receiver. The circuit techniques provide useful alternative methods for Loran-Omega receiver system designers.

In-place recalibration technique applied to a capacitance-type system for measuring rotor blade tip clearance

The rotor blade tip clearance measurement system consists of a capacitance sensing probe with self contained tuning elements, a connecting coaxial cable, and remotely located electronics. Tests show that the accuracy of the system suffers from a strong dependence on probe tip temperature and humidity. A novel inplace recalibration technique was presented which partly overcomes this problem through a simple modification of the electronics that permits a scale factor correction. This technique, when applied to a commercial system significantly reduced errors under varying conditions of humidity and temperature. Equations were also found that characterize the important cable and probe design quantities.

A high-speed computer link for moderate distances and noisy environments

To satisfy the need for a fully duplex high-speed computer data link for the antenna automation project at DSS 13, a very simple and inexpensive scheme was employed. The link requires two coaxial cables over which is sent a unipolar digital frequency modulated signal in which a logical 1 has twice the frequency of a logical 0. Optical isolators and filters reduce ground loop effects and increase noise immunity. Tests conducted in various environments and over different cable lengths at JPL, DSS 14 and DSS 13 have indicated that the link is highly effective.

Active Antenna for the VLF to HF Observer

A simple and low cost method of fabricating an active antenna preamplifier system covering the range of 10 KHz to 10 MHz for use with tunable communications receivers is described. The same type of system can be used with airborne VLF navigation receivers. By operating a high impedance preamplifier as a wide band device directly at the base of a short vertical antenna, the signal can be driven back to the receiver on a length of coaxial cable. The antenna can be as short as I meter and still give excellent results when the capacity to ground at the antenna is low.

TMS communications hardware. Volume 1: Computer interfaces

A prototpye coaxial cable bus communications system was designed to be used in the Trend Monitoring System (TMS) to connect intelligent graphics terminals (based around a Data General NOVA/3 computer) to a MODCOMP IV host minicomputer. The direct memory access (DMA) interfaces which were utilized for each of these computers are identified. It is shown that for the MODCOMP, an off-the-shell board was suitable, while for the NOVAs, custon interface circuitry was designed and implemented.

TMS communications hardware. Volume 2: Bus interface unit

A prototype coaxial cable bus communication system used in the Trend Monitoring System to interconnect intelligent graphics terminals to a host minicomputer is described. The terminals and host are connected to the bus through a microprocessor-based RF modem termed a Bus Interface Unit (BIU). The BIU hardware and the Carrier Sense Multiple Access Listen-While-Talk protocol used on the network are described.

High-speed data link for moderate distances and noisy environments

A full duplex, high speed data link is described which comprises identical modules at each site for communication over coaxial cables. Each module having a digital frequency modulation (DFM) transmitter with an first-in-first-out (FIFO) data buffer for data from a digital system to be transmitted over a cable and a receiver with an FIFO data buffer for data received for a digital system at the other end of the cable. Data words are preceded by a sync word which enables the receiver. Every word transmitted, including the sync word is stored in the FIFO data buffer. This arrangement using FIFO buffers allows for asynchronous transmission of data with receipt of the data beginning with the very first bit of the sync word.

Pulse switching for high energy lasers

A saturable inductor switch for compressing the width and sharpening the rise time of high voltage pulses from a relatively slow rise time, high voltage generator to an electric discharge gas laser (EDGL) also provides a capability for efficient energy transfer from a high impedance primary source to an intermediate low impedance laser discharge network. The switch is positioned with respect to a capacitive storage device, such as a coaxial cable, so that when a charge build-up in the storage device reaches a predetermined level, saturation of the switch inductor releases or switches energy stored in the capactive storage device to the EDGL. Cascaded saturable inductor switches for providing output pulses having rise times of less than ten nanoseconds and a technique for magnetically biasing the saturable inductor switch are disclosed.

The Lick Observatory charge-coupled device /CCD/ and controller

A description is given of a flexible microprocessor-based controller for charge-coupled device two-dimensional detectors. It is noted that the controller can operate under manual control or as a slave to a remote computer linked by coaxial cable. The system is discussed, together with data taken at the telescope and in the laboratory. The flexibility of the controller derives from its modular form and from the use of a programmable 8-bit microprocessor to control and sequence the electronic logic. The electronic circuits for such functions as signal processing, clock sequencing, voltage level adjustment, and temperature control are on small individual plug-in cards, making future improvements and changes simple. The software of the microprocessor is stored in erasable, programmable, read-only memory. Among the limitations of the controller is a scan speed of roughly 35 microsec per pixel.

An experiment to measure the one-way velocity of propagation of electromagnetic radiation

An experiment involving commercially available instrumentation to measure the velocity of the earth with respect to absolute space is described. The experiment involves the measurement of the one-way propagation velocity of electromagnetic radiation down a high-quality coaxial cable. It is demonstrated that the experiment is both physically meaningful and exceedingly simple in concept and in implementation. It is shown that with currently available commercial equipment one might expect to detect a threshold value for the component of velocity of the earth's motion with respect to absolute space in the equatorial plane of approximately 10 km/s, which greatly exceeds the velocity resolution required to detect the motion of the solar system with respect to the center of the galaxy.
