Two carrier communication system with single transmitter

A pulse code modulated communication system is disclosed for transmitting two subcarrier modulated carriers from a single transmitter comprising two channels for phase modulating the two carriers independently. The modulating subcarriers are independently modulated by data and/or pseudonoise (PN) codes as desired. The modulated carriers are switched alternately to the single transmitter in synchronism with operation of a PN code generator when PN code modulation is present, as for ranging.

Automatic carrier acquisition system

An automatic carrier acquisition system for a phase locked loop (PLL) receiver is disclosed. It includes a local oscillator, which sweeps the receiver to tune across the carrier frequency uncertainty range until the carrier crosses the receiver IF reference. Such crossing is detected by an automatic acquisition detector. It receives the IF signal from the receiver as well as the IF reference. It includes a pair of multipliers which multiply the IF signal with the IF reference in phase and in quadrature. The outputs of the multipliers are filtered through bandpass filters and power detected. The output of the power detector has a signal dc component which is optimized with respect to the noise dc level by the selection of the time constants of the filters as a function of the sweep rate of the local oscillator.

Carrier tracking, bit synchronization, and coding for S-band communications links

This paper presents the results of a study of the performance of Viterbi-decoded convolutional codes in the presence of nonideal carrier tracking and bit synchronization. A constraint length 7, rate 1/3 convolutional code and parameters suitable for the space shuttle coded communications links are used. Mathematical models are developed and theoretical and simulation results are obtained to determine the tracking and acquisition performance of the system. It is shown that the combined energy-to-noise degradation due to nonideal carrier tracking and bit synchronization over that required for the ideal tracking case can be held to less than 1.5 dB and that combined carrier tracking and bit timing can be acquired in only a few seconds for the parameters and operating ranges of the space shuttle coded communications links.

Determination of Orbiter and Carrier Aerodynamic Coefficients from Load Cell Measurements

A method of determining orbiter and carrier total aerodynamic coefficients from load cell measurements is required to support the inert and the captive active flights of the ALT program. A set of equations expressing the orbiter and carrier total aerodynamic coefficients in terms of the load cell measurements, the sensed dynamics of the Boeing 747 (carrier) aircraft, and the relative geometry of the orbiter/carrier is derived.

Determination of minority-carrier lifetime and surface recombination velocity with high spacial resolution

Quantitative analysis of the electron beam induced current in conjunction with high-resolution scanning makes it possible to evaluate the minority-carrier lifetime three dimensionally in the bulk and the surface recombination velocity two dimensionally, with a high spacial resolution. The analysis is based on the concept of the effective excitation strength of the carriers which takes into consideration all possible recombination sources. Two-dimensional mapping of the surface recombination velocity of phosphorus-diffused silicon diodes is presented as well as a three-dimensional mapping of the changes in the minority-carrier lifetime in ion-implanted silicon.

Method and apparatus for measuring minority carrier lifetimes and bulk diffusion length in P-N junction solar cells

Carrier lifetimes and bulk diffusion length are qualitatively measured as a means for qualification of a P-N junction photovoltaic solar cell. High frequency (blue) monochromatic light pulses and low-frequency (red) monochromatic light pulses were alternately applied to the cell while it was irradiated by light from a solar simulator, and synchronously displaying the derivative of the output voltage of the cell on an oscilloscope. The output voltage is a measure of the lifetimes of the minority carriers (holes) in the diffused N layer and majority carriers (electrons) in the bulk P material, and of the diffusion length of the bulk silicon. By connecting a reference cell in this manner with a test cell to be tested in reverse parallel, the display of a test cell that matches the reference cell will be a substantially zero output.

Costas loop demodulation of suppressed carrier BPSK signals in the DSN environment: Experimental results obtained at TDL

Suppressed carrier binary phase-shift keyed (BPSK) signalling is currently being considered as a design alternative for future DSN telemetry in the multimegabit range. Carrier tracking of such signals is usually achieved by a Costas loop, as opposed to the ordinary phase lock loop. A Costas loop capable of demodulating BPSK signals with data rates up to 1 Msps was designed and constructed and its Doppler tracking performance with respect to a Block 3 receiver was tested at the Telecommunications Development Laboratory (TDL). The compatibility of suppressed carrier signalling with the current radiometric system, specifically Doppler tracking and ranging, was investigated. The experimental results obtained to-date with respect to Doppler tracking are presented.

Application of the concept of dynamic trim control to automatic landing of carrier aircraft

The results of a simulation study of an alternative design concept for an automatic landing control system are presented. The alternative design concept for an automatic landing control system is described. The design concept is the total aircraft flight control system (TAFCOS). TAFCOS is an open loop, feed forward system that commands the proper instantaneous thrust, angle of attack, and roll angle to achieve the forces required to follow the desired trajector. These dynamic trim conditions are determined by an inversion of the aircraft nonlinear force characteristics. The concept was applied to an A-7E aircraft approaching an aircraft carrier. The implementation details with an airborne digital computer are discussed. The automatic carrier landing situation is described. The simulation results are presented for a carrier approach with atmospheric disturbances, an approach with no disturbances, and for tailwind and headwind gusts.

Open-loop radio science with a suppressed-carrier signal

When a suppressed-carrier signal is squared, the carrier reappears in doubled form. An open-loop receiver can be used to deliver a recording of a band-limited waveform containing this carrier, whose amplitude and phase can be tracked by the radio science experimenter.

Effective masses, relaxation times, and carrier mobilities in some chloride intercalants of graphite

The effective masses, carrier scattering times and carrier mobilities have been measured in selected graphite intercalation compounds using the Shubnikov-de Haas effect at a series of temperatures between 4 and 50 K. Effective masses are less than or equal to 0.1 of the free-electron mass, scattering times are about 10 to the -13th/s and carrier mobilities are on the order of 10,000 sq cm/V s.

Evaluation of a trajectory command concept for manual control of carrier approaches and landings

A novel trajectory control system concept was implemented to provide manual control of a conventional jet aircraft. This concept, called Total Aircraft Flight Control System (TAFCOS), utilizes an inverse model of the aerodynamic and propulsion characteristics and employs feedforward control to provide the required acceleration command. The concept requires on-board digital computations which can easily be handled by a modern airborne computer. The system was studied in a piloted simulation of the carrier approach and landing task with primarily visual flight and guidance cues. The principal modes of vertical flight-path control investigated were vertical velocity command and vertical acceleration command. The study included manual carrier approaches with and without moderate ship motion and associated air disturbances, and tests of the effects of discrete gusts. Manual control of flight path through this new concept was shown to be feasible as an addition to an automatic control system and to have potential as an improved mode of control over conventional control for the carrier approach task.

Influence of radiative recombination on the minority-carrier transport in direct band-gap semiconductors

When a semiconductor sample is irradiated by means of an external source, emitting photons or electrons, excess carriers are produced which distribute themselves throughout the sample. One of the parameters which determine the distribution of the carriers is the surface recombination velocity. The present investigation is concerned with the recombination lifetime tau. The predominant mechanism for recombination in wide band-gap semiconductors is described by the Shockley-Read-Hall (SRH) theory. The transport equations are derived for free carriers and the radiation field. The considered theory is applied to a semiinfinite, one-dimensional semiconductor slab irradiated by light of a given frequency. Some numerical considerations based on n-type GaAs are presented. Attention is given to a determination of the radiation transmitted through the surface of the sample.

Coherent Digital Demodulation of a Residual Carrier Signal Using IF Sampling

An analysis is presented of a digital technique for the coherent demodulation of a residual carrier signal with a biphase modulated square wave subcarrier. The processing technique employs the concept of intermediate frequencies IF sampling. An optimum Costas loop is used for subcarrier demodulation and data-aided carrier tracking, i.e., combined Costas and residual carrier tracking. It is shown that the loops perform essentially the same as the corresponding analog loops in terms of signal-to-noise ratio and loop bandwidth. The sampling does not introduce biases or other significant effects on the loops, provided that the loop bandwidth is very small compared to the symbol rate, and that the number of samples per symbol is large compared to inverse loop bandwidth.

Effects of CW interference on the carrier tracking loop of the deep space network

A radio-frequency interference (RFI) environment can cause serious problems for communications systems, such as the Deep Space Network (DSN). For this reason, it is necessary to determine first the RFI susceptibility characteristics for DSN receiving systgms. The present investigation is concerned with CW RFI's which are close in frequency to the carrier frequency. The carrier tracking loop is highly sensitive, and this type of RFI will degrade the carrier loop performance before saturation effects become noticeable. The investigation has the objective to develop an analytical model which will make it possible to predict the tracking performance of the Block IV receiver when operated in the presence of a CW RFI in the receiver passband. The Block IV receiver represents one of the DSN receivers. Attention is given to the effects of a CW RFI on a phase-locked loop, the effects of a bandpass limiter, numerical results, experimental verification, and aspects of computer simulation.

Method and apparatus for measuring minority carrier lifetime in a direct band-gap semiconductor

A direct band-gap semiconductor is exposed to intensity-modulated photon radiation having a characteristic energy at least as great as the energy gap of the semiconductor. This produces a time dependent concentration of excess charge carriers through the material, producing a luminescence signal modulated at the same frequency as the incident radiation but shifted in phase by an amount related to the lifetime of minority carriers. In a preferred embodiment, the phase shift of the luminescence signal is determined by transforming it to a modulated electrical signal and mixing the electrical signal with a reference signal modulated at the same frequency and having a phase which is known relative to the incident radiation. Minority carrier lifetime is calculated by integrating a direct current component of the mixed signal (F sub dc) over a 2 pi range in phase of the reference signal.

Optimized tracking of RF carriers with phase noise, including Pioneer 10 results

The ability to track very weak signals from distant spacecraft is limited by the phase instabilities of the received signal and of the local oscillator employed by the receiver. These instabilities ultimately limit the minimum loop bandwidth that can be used in a phase-coherent receiver, and hence limit the ratio of received carrier power to noise spectral density which can be tracked phase coherently. A method is presented for near real time estimation of the received carrier phase and additive noise spectrum, and optimization of the phase locked loop bandwidth. The method was used with the breadboard Deep Space Network (DSN) Advanced Receiver to optimize tracking of very weak signals from the Pioneer 10 spacecraft, which is now more distant that the edge of the solar system. Tracking with bandwidths of 0.1 Hz to 1.0 Hz reduces tracking signal threshold and increases carrier loop signal to noise ratio (SNR) by 5 dB to 15 dB compared to the 3 Hz bandwidth of the receivers now used operationally in the DSN. This will enable the DSN to track Pioneer 10 until its power sources fails near the end of the century.

Minority-carrier lifetime analysis of silicon epitaxy and bulk crystals with nonuniformly distributed defects

Existing analyses of the pulsed response of an MOS capacitor for minority-carrier lifetime determination result in a lifetime value averaged over most of the depletion region width. In this report, an analysis of MOS C-t data is presented that enables minority-carrier generation lifetime to be plotted as a function of depletion region depth. The technique is shown to be useful for samples with bulk or buried interfacial layer defects that have defect-free surfaces. Data are presented for intrinsically gettered bulk crystals and extrinsically gettered Si(2-pct Ge) epitaxial layers with misfit dislocations. In addition, for samples that do have uniform lifetimes, the measurement time required for determining carrier lifetime has been reduced by more than an order of magnitude.
