Elucidating Actinide–Pertechnetate and Actinide–Perrhenate Bonding via a Family of Th–TcO 4 and Th–ReO 4 Frameworks and Solutions

Technetium-99, a β-emitter produced from 235 U fission, poses a challenge for the nuclear industry due to co-extraction of pertechnetate (TcO 4 – ) with the actinides (An) during nuclear fuel reprocessing. Previous studies suggested that direct coordination of pertechnetate with An plays an important role in the coextraction process. However, few studies have provided direct evidence for An–TcO 4 – bonding in the solid state, and even fewer in solution. The present study describes synthesis and structural elucidation of a family of thorium(IV)-pertechnetate/perrhenate (ReO 4 – , nonradioactive surrogate) compounds, which is obtained by dissolution of thorium oxyhydroxide in perrhenic/pertechnic acid followed by crystallization, with or without heating. For reaction ratios of 3:1, 4:1, and 6:1 MO 4 – /Th(IV) (M = Tc, Re), the crystallized compounds reflect the same ratio, suggesting facile and flexible coordination. Furthermore, nine structures reveal 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional frameworks with varying topologies. While a multitude of compounds isolated from 4:1 (and 6:1) reaction solutions feature Th monomers linked by MO 4 – , the 3:1 reaction solution yielded the well-known dihydroxide-bridged thorium dimer, linked, and capped by MO 4 – . Density functional theory calculations on ReO 4 – /TcO 4 – isomorphs suggest similar bonding characteristics in the solid state, but experimental solution characterization noted differences. Specifically, small-angle X-ray scattering studies suggest the bonding of Th–TcO 4 – persists in solution, while Th–ReO 4 – bonding is less apparent.

Inverse Design of Ultralow Lattice Thermal Conductivity Materials via Materials Database Screening of Lone Pair Cation Coordination Environment

The presence of lone pair (LP) electrons is strongly associated with the disruption of lattice heat transport, which is a critical component of strategies to achieve efficient thermoelectric energy conversion. By exploiting an empirical relationship between lattice thermal conductivity, κ L , and the bond angles of pnictogen group LP cation coordination environments, we develop an inverse design strategy based on a materials database screening to identify chalcogenide materials with ultralow κ L for thermoelectrics. Screening the ~635 000 real and hypothetical inorganic crystals of the Open Quantum Materials Database based on the constituent elements, nominal electron counting, LP cation coordination environment, and synthesizability, we identify 189 compounds expected to exhibit ultralow κ L . As a validation, we explicitly compute the lattice dynamical properties of two of the compounds (Cu 2 AgBiPbS 4 and MnTl 2 As 2 S 5 ) using first-principles calculations and successfully find both achieve ultralow κ L values at room temperature of ~0.3-0.4 W/(m·K) corresponding to the amorphous limit. Furthermore, our data-driven approach provides promising candidates for thermoelectric materials and opens new avenues for the design of phononic properties of materials.

First-Row Transition Metals Complexes with Fused Oxazolidine (FOX) Ligands

In this comprehensive study, we report the syntheses and crystal structures of 6 fused oxazolidine (FOX) bicycles and 22 complexes with FOX ligands. The structures are compared to the few FOX complexes found in literature. For our investigations, we developed synthetic strategies to selectively synthesize chiral or achiral FOX bicycles with pyridyl substituents. The coordination chemistry of the chiral and achiral FOX compounds with first-row transition metals is discussed in an indepth analysis of the crystal structures. We found that the binding modes of the ligands are dependent on the configuration of the FOX backbone and on the steric demand of the substituents which were introduced to the pyridyl groups. Here, the configuration of the FOX ligands is retained during the coordination of metal(II) ions such as Mn 2+ , Fe 2+ , Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , Cu 2+ . Reactions of these metal ions with chiral FOX ligands lead to the formation of chiral complexes. In contrast, stronger Lewis acidic metal(III) ions, such as Fe 3+ or Al 3+ , induce an isomerization of the chiral FOX ligands to their achiral diastereomers.

Variable hydrazine coordination modes from reactions with dichlorotris(triphenylphosphine)ruthenium(II)

The reactivity of the prominent ruthenium(II) catalyst and precursor, RuCl 2 (PPh 3 ) 3 , was explored with hydrazine and its derivatives. The reactions produced 6-coordinate ruthenium(II) products that bond with the hydrazine moiety in bridging (NH 2 NH 2 or NH 2 NHMe), end-on (NH 2 NHMe, NH 2 NHPh, or NH 2 NMe 2 ), or side-on (NH 2 NMe 2 ) fashions. The products have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction and 31 P NMR spectroscopy. With NH 2 NH 2 , the dimeric product, [RuCl 2 (PPh 3 ) 2 ] 2 ($μ$-N 2 H 4 ) 2 , was formed under all conditions used. For other hydrazines, the reaction stoichiometry governed product formation to yield either bimetallic or monomeric products. When the RuCl 2 (PPh 3 ) 3 to hydrazine derivative ratio was 1:1 or lower, bimetallic complexes were formed while a 1:2 ratio produced monomeric compounds. The exception to the latter occurs with the production of the monomeric compound, RuCl 2 (PPh 3 ) 2 ($η$ 2 -NH 2 NMe 2 ), that forms employing a 1:1 ratio. In addition to stoichiometry, steric factors and hydrogen bonding played a significant role in dictating the bonding mode of hydrazines. The bimetallic complexes were further reacted to yield the corresponding monomeric products, adopting the form RuCl 2 (PPh 3 ) 2 (L) 2 (L = NH 2 NHMe, NH 2 NHPh, or NH 2 NMe 2 ). Reactions utilizing less than a 1:2 ratio of RuCl 2 (PPh 3 ) 3 to NH 2 NMe 2 produced a mixture of products that appear to be in equilibrium. In conclusion, FT calculations were performed to gain insight into the reaction energetics and molecular stability.

Crystallographic Evidence for Formation of M 6 O 8 /M 6 O 9 f-Element Clusters in Hydrolysis Reactions

In this contribution, we have conducted an examination of crystallographic data which includes 184 4f- and 5f-structures containing the M 6 O 8 or M 6 O 9 moiety. Since much of the work in this field has actually been done to explore the formation and properties of metal organic frameworks (MOFs), we hope that this collection can be used by actinide scientists to further investigate structural and mechanistic trends and gain insight into the formation of these compounds. Here we discuss the general trends in coordination, ligands used, and bonding within the M 6 O 8 or M 6 O 9 core in the hope that further computational work can benefit.

Machine learning of 27Al NMR electric field gradient tensors for crystalline structures from DFT

NMR crystallography has emerged as a promising technique for the determination and refinement of atomic coordinates in crystal structures. The crystal structure of compounds containing quadrupolar nuclei, such as 27Al, can be improved by directly comparing solid-state NMR measurements to DFT computations of the electric field gradient (EFG) tensor. The non-negligible computational cost of these first-principles calculations limits the applicability of this method to all but the most well-defined structures. We developed a fast, low-cost machine learning model to predict EFG parameters based on local structural motifs and elemental parameters. We computed 8081 EFG tensors from 1681 27Al crystalline solids using DFT and benchmarked them against 105 experimentally measured 27Al sites. Surprisingly, simple local geometric features dominate the predictive performance of the resulting random-forest model, yielding an R2 value of 0.98 and an RMSE of 0.61 MHz for CQ, the quadrupolar coupling constant. This model accuracy should enable pre-refining future structural assignments before finally validating with first-principles calculations. Such a catalogue of 27Al NMR tensors can serve as a tool for researchers assigning complex NMR spectra influenced by the nuclear electric quadrupole interaction.

Heterometallic UO 2 2+ /Ag + Complexes: Structural Design and Luminescence Properties

Reported here are the synthesis, structural characterization, and luminescence properties of 11 novel UO 2 2+ /Ag + heterometallic complexes. Halogenated benzoic acids (2,6-dihalobenzoic acid (halo = F, Br), 3,5-dichlorobenzoic acid, and 3-halobenzoic acid (halo = Br, I)) and N-donor polycyclic ligands (2,2′-bipyridine, 2,2’;6′,2″-terpyridine, 1,10-phenanthroline, 2,2′-bipyrimidine) were employed to synthesize a set of compounds and induce structural diversity. The primary mode of coordination with the uranyl cation is hexagonal bipyramidal monomeric units with three halobenzoate ligands in the equatorial plane, though 1-D chains with pentagonal bipyramidal uranyl centers also form. The Ag + cations coordinate preferentially to the N-donor ligands and serve as counter-cations for the anionic uranyl motifs. The soft ligand character of the N-donor molecules is found to be a requirement for the inclusion of the Ag + cation into the structures. Anionic uranyl units and cationic silver units assemble via noncovalent interactions between π systems on adjacent rings and between halogens (when Br and I are present). Solid-state emission spectra display the usual uranyl band with superimposed vibronic fine structure, except for that of compound 1 , which shows emission from the 2,2′-bipyridine center. This family of compounds represents a substantial contribution to the already rich library of UO 2 2+ /Ag + compounds, and the synthetic parameters discussed within reveal a platform for the design of new heterometallic uranyl-containing materials.

Nearly Identical but Not Isotypic: Influence of Lanthanide Contraction on Cs 2 NaLn(PS 4 ) 2 (Ln = La–Nd, Sm, and Gd–Ho)

The effect of the lanthanide contraction often results in topological and symmetry changes in compounds with the same compositions as a function of lanthanide cation size. Here we report on the first example of a lanthanide thiophosphate exhibiting a change in the lanthanide cation environment without any topological or symmetry change. A series of new lanthanide thiophosphates with mixed alkali cations was obtained via a flux crystal growth technique using a CsI flux. The obtained compounds Cs 2 NaLn(PS 4 ) 2 (Ln = La–Nd, Sm, Gd–Ho) were grown as large single crystals (~0.1–1 mm 3 ) and characterized using single crystal X-ray diffraction and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Moving across the series, the structural studies revealed a change in the lanthanide coordination environment dependent upon the identity of the lanthanide. Although all compounds in the Cs 2 NaLn(PS 4 ) 2 series crystallize in the same space group and have the same Wyckoff positions of the atoms, a slight size change between Sm 3+ and Gd 3+ causes a subtle change in coordination number from 9 (for Ln = La–Sm) to 8 (for Ln = Gd–Ho), resulting in two distinct but virtually identical structure types. Ab initio calculations were performed, and the observed experimental trend was corroborated computationally. Finally, magnetic measurements performed on the Cs 2 NaLn(PS 4 ) 2 (Ln = Ce, Pr, Nd, Gd, and Tb) compounds revealed paramagnetic behavior.

Substituent size versus metal binding of inhibitors with variants of influenza endonuclease

The influenza virus causes a significant burden of illness each year. Although vaccination is the most effective method to prevent seasonal influenza infection, viral escape mechanisms make vaccine composition difficult to predict. Antivirals are crucial for decreasing rates of morbidity and mortality from influenza viral infection. The newest anti-influenza drugs target the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase acidic N-terminal (PA N ) endonuclease, a critical component of influenza viral replication machinery. This study examines the structure of inhibitors of PAN that utilize a hydroxypyridinone-based metal-binding pharmacophore (MBP). Specifically, this report explores how the size of substituent groups impacts the binding conformation and affinity of a series of compounds against both wild-type (WT) and resistance mutant strains, I38T and E23K. Co-crystal structures revealed that the distance between compounds and enzyme residue 38 was conserved to maintain strong interactions, resulting in deviations from ideal coordination geometries at the active site metal centers. This suggests the interactions with residue 38 with each compound is important and can impact inhibitor potency as a consequence of distortions in the metal binding geometry of the compounds.

Homologous Alkali Metal Copper Rare-Earth Chalcogenides A 2 Cu 2 n Ln 4 Q 7+ n ( n = 1, 2, 3)

Twenty-seven new members of the A 2 Cu 2n Ln 4 Q 7+n (A = Cs, Rb; Ln = La-Nd, Sm, Gd-Yb; Q = S, Se) homologous series were synthesized in one of three structural types (indicated by n = 1, 2, 3). All the compounds contained 3D frameworks with alkali-metal-containing tunnels. For each increment in n, one Cu 2 Q was added, which was incorporated into the framework as an edge-sharing tetrahedron by replacing a square planar chalcogenide site. High-throughput DFT calculations predicted many of the phases to be thermodynamically stable. These predictions were compared with the synthesis results for the phases formed in each composition space. In the syntheses, heavier lanthanides showed a preference to start forming the n = 3 ACu 3 Ln 2 Q 5 , which is consistent with the predictions. RbCuNd 2 Se 4 and RbCuTb 2 Se 4 were found to be thermally stable under vacuum at temperatures up to 1000 °C. Optical measurements revealed band gaps of 1.55(5) and 1.62(5) eV for CsCuCe 2 Se 4 and RbCuTb 2 Se 4 , respectively, and a work function of 4.83(5) eV for CsCuPr 2 Se 4 . Additionally, some n = 3 ACu 3 Ln 2 Qs compounds exhibit a negative phonon mode because of a copper atom coordination, which may distort to a trigonal planar geometry at sufficiently low temperatures. The dynamic instabilities and the predicted distortion in the copper tetrahedra for the n = 3 ACu 3 Ln 2 Q 5 compounds were found to have a linear relationship with the atomic number of the lanthanides and the electronegativity of the lanthanides. In conclusion, the A 2 Cu 2 n Ln 4 Q 7+n compounds can potentially find application as high-temperature thermoelectric materials and other semiconductors.

Novosphingobium aromaticivorans LigR coordinates transcription of genes involved in metabolism of multiple types of aromatics

Aromatic compounds are a ubiquitous and diverse family of chemicals with functions as biomolecules, natural products, industrial chemicals, and pollutants. Novosphingobium aromaticivorans DSM 12444 uses multiple inducible pathways to catabolize H-, G-, and S-type aromatics that contain zero, one, or two methoxy groups, respectively. Here, we obtain a systems-level view of the transcriptional control of its aromatic metabolic pathways. Several in vitro analyses found that a N. aromaticivorans homolog of the Sphingobium lignivorans SYK-6 transcription factor LigR bound genomic DNA upstream of genes involved in metabolism of multiple aromatic types. We found that a ΔLigR mutant had growth defects on all three types of aromatics as sole carbon sources. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that LigR was required to increase expression of gene products that function in metabolism of all three aromatic types. We also found that, in media containing both glucose and an aromatic carbon source, the ΔLigR mutant directed intermediates through alternative aromatic metabolic pathways. Protein-DNA binding assays showed that N. aromaticivorans LigR binds immediately upstream of promoters of genes involved in aromatic metabolism. We found that N. aromaticivorans LigR coordinates the expression of enzymes that function in the catabolism of H-, G-, and S-type aromatics, and that there are differences in the role of LigR in N. aromaticivorans and S. lignivorans. A comparative genomic analysis predicted that LigR homologs and the aromatic-metabolizing genes that it directly regulates are often co-localized in the genomes of Sphingomonadales, but often not found in this arrangement in many other known aromatic metabolizing bacteria.

Synthesis of Anhydrous Acetates for the Components of Nuclear Fuel Recycling in Dialkylimidazolium Acetate Ionic Liquids [plus supplemental information]

A series of anhydrous acetate salts with uranium {[C 2 C 1 im][UO 2 (OAc) 3 ] (1), [C 2 C 2 im][UO 2 (OAc) 3 ] (2), and [C 4 C 1 im][UO 2 (OAc) 3 ] (3)}, lanthanides {[C 2 C 2 im] 2 [La(OAc) 5 ] (4) and [C 2 C 1 im] 2 [Nd(OAc) 5 ] (5)}, and strontium {[C 2 C 1 im] n [Sr- (OAc) 3 ] n (6)} (where C 2 C 1 im = 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium, C 2 C 2 im = 1,3-diethylimidazolium, C 4 C 1 im = 1-butyl-3-methylimi-dazolium, and OAc = acetate) have been prepared and structurally characterized. Both lanthanides and strontium are common components of the nuclear fuel waste, and their separation from uranium is an important but still challenging task. A new synthetic method with dialkylimidazolium acetate ionic liquids (ILs) as the solvent has been developed for the direct synthesis of homoleptic acetates from the corresponding hydrates and, unexpectedly, hardly soluble f-element oxides. Although the group of characterized compounds shows perfect structural variability, all actinide and lanthanide metal ions form monomeric complex anions where the metal cation coordinates to five ligands including two oxygen atoms in the case of uranium, as is commonly observed for uranyl compounds. Crystallographic analyses revealed that the complex [UO 2 (OAc) 3 ] - anions possess rather standard D 3h symmetry featuring a hexagonal-bipyramidal coordination environment, while the lanthanide anions [Ln(OAc) 5 ] 2- are fully asymmetric and the Ln 3+ cations are 10-coordinated in the form of a distorted bicapped tetragonal antiprism. This is the first report of lanthanide ions coordinated in this fashion. For Sr 2+ , 9-fold coordination through oxygen atoms in the form of a strongly distorted tricapped trigonal prism is observed. Furthermore, the crystallization of anhydrous, homoleptic, anionic acetate complexes from such a large variety of different metal salts appears to be due to the properties of dialkylimidazolium acetate ILs themselves, including enhanced basicity from the high concentration of free anions and their greater affinity for hydrogen-bonding solutes relative to metal cations.

Strong Electronic and Magnetic Coupling in M 4 (M = Ni, Cu) Clusters via Direct Orbital Interactions between Low-Coordinate Metal Centers

In this report we present an extensive study of tetranuclear transition-metal cluster compounds M 4 (NP t Bu 3 ) 4 and [M 4 (NP t Bu 3 ) 4 ][B(C 6 F 5 ) 4 ] (M = Ni, Cu; t Bu = tert -butyl), which feature low-coordinate metal centers and direct metal-metal orbital overlap. X-ray diffraction, electrochemical, magnetic, spectroscopic, and computational analysis elucidate the nature of the bonding interactions in these clusters and the impact of these interactions on the electronic and magnetic properties. Direct orbital overlap results in strongly coupled, large-spin ground states in the [Ni 4 (NP t Bu 3 ) 4 ] +/0 clusters and fully delocalized, spin-correlated electrons. Correlated electronic structure calculations confirm the presence of ferromagnetic ground states that arise from direct exchange between magnetic orbitals, and, in the case of the neutral cluster, itinerant electron magnetism similar to that in metallic ferromagnets. The cationic nickel cluster also possesses large magnetic anisotropy exemplified by a large, positive axial zero-field splitting parameter of D = +7.95 or +9.2 cm -1 , as determined by magnetometry or electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, respectively. The [Ni 4 (NP t Bu 3 ) 4 ] + cluster is also the first molecule with easy-plane magnetic anisotropy to exhibit zero-field slow magnetic relaxation, and under a small applied field, it exhibits relaxation exclusively through an Orbach mechanism with a spin relaxation barrier of 16 cm -1 . The S = 1 / 2 complex [Cu 4 (NP t Bu 3 ) 4 ] + exhibits slow magnetic relaxation via a Raman process on the millisecond time scale, supporting the presence of slow relaxation via an Orbach process in the nickel analogue. Overall, this work highlights the unique electronic and magnetic properties that can be realized in metal clusters featuring direct metal-metal orbital interactions between low-coordinate metal centers.

Temperature‐Programmed Separation of Hexane Isomers by a Porous Calcium Chloranilate Metal‐Organic Framework

Abstract The full separation of alkane isomers as a function of different degrees of branching remains a daunting challenge due to its stringent requirement with respect to pore dimensions of the adsorbents. In this work, we report a novel microporous coordination network built on calcium (II) and chloranilate. The compound has a flexible framework and exhibits temperature‐dependent adsorption behavior toward hexane isomers. At 30 °C, it accommodates substantial amounts of linear and monobranched hexanes but fully excludes their dibranched isomer, and at elevated temperatures such as 150 °C, it acts as a splitter for linear and branched alkanes. Its capability of efficient discrimination of hexane isomers as a function of branching is verified by experimental breakthrough measurements. Ab initio calculations have uncovered the underlying selective size‐exclusion separation mechanism.

Elucidation of Active Oxygen Sites upon Delithiation of Li 3 IrO 4

Transformational increases in the storage capacity of battery cathodes could be achieved by tapping into the redox activity at oxide ligands in addition to conventional transition metal couples. However, the key signatures that govern such lattice oxygen redox (LOR) have not been ascertained. Li 3 IrO 4 has the largest reversible LOR, rendering it a unique model system. Here, X-ray spectroscopy and computational simulations reveal that LOR in Li 3 IrO 4 is selectively compensated via O sites with three lone pairs, which are activated by Li/Ir disorder. The two-electron LOR can be reversed to regenerate the initial state without unlocking competing bulk reactions observed in many other compounds. We uncover an intricate interplay between stoichiometry, O coordination, and nonbonding states in LOR and pinpoint spectroscopic signatures. This interplay is indispensable for designing materials with 3d metals that fulfill the promise of LOR to overcome the bottlenecks of current cathodes for future implementation in practical batteries.
