Medium-Entropy Engineering of Magnetism in Layered Antiferromagnet Cu x Ni 2(1- x ) Cr x P 2 S 6

Antiferromagnetic van der Waals-type M 2 P 2 X 6 compounds provide a versatile material platform for studying 2D magnetism and relevant phenomena. Establishing ferromagnetism in 2D materials is technologically valuable. Though magnetism is generally tunable via a chemical way, it is challenging to induce ferromagnetism with isovalent chalcogen and bimetallic substitutions in M 2 P 2 X 6 . Here, we report co-substitution of Cu 1+ and Cr 3+ for Ni 2+ in Ni 2 P 2 S 6 , creating Cu x Ni 2(1-x) Cr x P 2 S 6 medium-entropy alloys spanning a full substitution range (x = 0 to 1). Such substitution strategy leads to a unique evolution in crystal structure and magnetic phases that are distinct from traditional isovalent bimetallic doping, with Cu and Cr co-substitution enhancing ferromagnetic correlations and generating a weak ferromagnetic phase in intermediate compositions. This aliovalent substitution strategy offers a universal approach for tuning layered magnetism in antiferromagnetic systems, which along with the potential for light-matter interaction and high-temperature ferroelectricity, can enable multifunctional device applications.

Computational Spectroscopy of the Cr–Cr Bond in Coordination Complexes

In this work, we report the accurate computational vibrational analysis of the Cr–Cr bond in dichromium complexes using second-order multireference complete active space methods (CASPT2), allowing direct comparison with experimental spectroscopic data both to facilitate interpreting the low-energy region of the spectra and to provide insights into the nature of the bonds themselves. Recent technological development by the authors has realized such computation for the first time. Accurate simulation of the vibrational structure of these compounds has been hampered by their notorious multiconfigurational electronic structure that yields bond distances that do not correlate with bond order. Some measured Cr–Cr vibrational stretching modes, ν(Cr 2 ), have suggested weaker bonding, even for so-called ultrashort Cr–Cr bonds, while others are in line with the bond distance. Here, we optimize geometries and compute ν(Cr 2 ) with CASPT2 for three well-characterized complexes, Cr 2 (O 2 CCH 3 ) 4 (H 2 O) 2 , Cr 2 (mhp) 4 , and Cr 2 (dmp) 4 . We obtain CASPT2 harmonic ν(Cr 2 ) modes in good agreement with experiment at 282 cm –1 for Cr 2 (mhp) 4 and 353 cm –1 for Cr 2 (dmp) 4 , compute 50 Cr and 54 Cr isotope shifts, and demonstrate that the use of the so-called IPEA shift leads to improved Cr–Cr distances. Additionally, normal mode sampling was used to estimate anharmonicity along ν(Cr 2 ), leading to an anharmonic mode of 272 cm –1 for Cr 2 (mhp) 4 and 333 cm –1 for Cr 2 (dmp) 4 .

Microstructural examination of interactions between chromia-based refractory and nuclear glass in a melter

This study shows the effects of nuclear waste glass production on Monofrax K-3 refractory corrosion. A continuously fed research-scale melter containing an Fe- and Ni-rich simulated nuclear waste feed with borosilicate glass-forming chemicals was cyclically melted at 1150°C and idled at 1050°C for a total of 11 weeks. Chemical maps using scanning electron microscopy show the interactions between the quenched melt and the refractory. Nanoscale X-ray-computed tomography was used for a three-dimensional visualization of certain parts of the interface. Unreacted K-3 consists of primarily corundum (Al,Cr) 2 O 3 and spinel (Fe 2+ ,Mg)(Al,Cr) 2 O 4 interlocking crystalline phases. Some of the Cr from the refractory interacts with the Ni and Fe from the melt to form a reaction layer comprising (Ni,Fe 2+ )(Cr,Fe 3+ ) 2 O 4 spinel crystals. Simultaneously, melt components (Na,Si) infiltrate into the refractory. This interaction proceeds at the expense of the integrity of the refractory structure. Intact refractory grains (e.g., (Al,Cr) 2 O 3 ) as well as the reaction layer itself can lose mechanical integrity and spall off into the melt, especially near the top of the melter. As the reaction layer can be a protective boundary for the refractory against further melt infiltration, a reduction in the reaction layer thickness allows an increase in refractory corrosion.
