Nuclear safety Enhanced: A Deep dive into current and future RAVEN applications

As the horizon of nuclear energy expands with the advent of small modular reactors, IV generation reactors, and fusion reactors, there is a growing perspective that the licensing process could benefit from a more comprehensive approach. Moving beyond traditional deterministic and PRA analysis might pave the way for a novel safety analysis paradigm propelled by the increasing computational power at our disposal. This paper explores different methodologies that can improve the outcomes of nuclear safety analysis. These range from uncertainty quantification techniques, aimed at enhancing the precision of safety margins, to deploying dynamic event trees by driving system code simulations, capturing the potential evolutions of severe accidents. These methodologies introduce innovative dimensions to safety analysis, considering the consequences of postulated events and the dynamics of accident sequences. However, they also bring forth challenges, especially in managing the complexity and sheer volume of potential scenarios. The paper touches upon some strategies to counter these challenges, emphasizing the importance of adaptability and continuous evolution in the face of emerging nuclear safety concerns. Additionally, the paper sheds light on the need for advanced tools to apply these methodologies. Among these tools is RAVEN, an open-source software designed for parametric and probabilistic analyses. Its core components, including distribution, sampler, and reduced order model, enable various applications, from risk assessment and mitigation to dynamic learning and plant control logic simulations.

A Dive into Underwater Solar Cells

Our oceans are vast, mostly unexplored and difficult to monitor. Large-scale implementation of a fully autonomous 'Internet of Underwater Things' would transform how we collect and share data from this domain; however, deployment is prohibited by the lack of persistent power sources. In principle, underwater solar-energy generation can complement the use of batteries and provide a solution, although dedicated research is needed since traditional silicon solar cells do not perform well underwater due to water's strong absorption of near-infrared light. In this Perspective we present examples of solar-powered underwater applications and discuss which types of solar-harvesting materials could be appropriate, including GaInP variants, CdTe, organic semiconductors, and perovskite semiconductors. We also discuss challenges that need to be addressed, such as the development of effective antifouling coatings and new certification standards given that underwater conditions are starkly different from those in terrestrial environments.

What do Coulombic Efficiency and Capacity Retention Truly Measure? A Deep Dive into Cyclable Lithium Inventory, Limitation Type, and Redox Side Reactions

Here, the battery performance metrics of Coulombic efficiency (CE) and capacity retention (CR) are derived in terms of cycling current and side-reaction currents at each electrode. A cyclable lithium inventory (CLI) framework is developed to explain the fundamental differences between inventory-limited and site-limited cells. The otherwise unmeasurable oxidation and reduction side-reaction currents are expressed in terms of cycling current, CE, and CR for both limitation types. Important conclusions regarding cyclable lithium inventory, limitation type, and the interpretation of CE and CR are discussed. From the framework, CE depends on either the oxidation side-reaction current or the reduction side-reaction current, but not both. CE and CR depend on cell limitation type and are increased by faster cycling. Experiments are presented to support the framework and demonstrate that cells can transition between limitation types. These conclusions are presented in terms of lithium-ion batteries, but this framework may be extended to describe other battery systems.

ESS-DIVE File Level Metadata Extractor

The File-level Metadata (FLMD) parser is a lightweight python script that can produce a summary of fields based on column headers within a Comma-separated Values (CSV) file. The script enables a way to extract certain metadata fields from CSV data files. An optional configuration file can be used to select specific column headers to extract a smaller subset of values. The script can be used on a single file, or it can be given a directory to process groups of files in bulk. The FLMD parser outputs the metadata as a JSON and can be configured to updated the source file or produce an external companion file.

ESS-DIVE reporting format for field measurements of soil respiration

This is a new data and metadata reporting format for soil respiration data, based on engagement with a wide range of researchers in the earth and ecological sciences as well as expert advisory panels. Reporting formats are intended to be ‘bottom-up’, community-developed documents and templates that can enable consistent, findable, accessible, interoperable, and reproducible (FAIR) data; our goal was a reporting format that would be relevant and useful for synthesis activities, optimizing data discoverability and usability while not placing an undue burden on data contributors. The format is split into two levels of information—metadata about chambers (used to measure soil respiration in the field), and the measured data themselves. The file data_reportingformat_template.xlsx contains information on how the data table should be structured, including field names, field descriptions, and units; the chammetadata_reportingformat_template.xlsx file contains similar information for the chamber-level metadata. Fundamentally, this format aims to enable FAIR data through an easy-to-use guide for data providers interested in formatting their data in a common way, and provide ‘future-proofing’ capabilities to support reanalyses of soil respiration data, a globally-important component of the carbon cycle.

ESS-DIVE Reporting Format for Amplicon Abundance Table

While standardized sequencing data is available in public repositories and efforts such as MIxS for common sample collection and processing metadata are well established, the lack of common bioinformatic processing metadata has hindered the ability to do large-scale metaanalyses and the potential for data re-use by non-experts such as ecosystem, watershed, or earth system modelers. To address this need for Department of Energy researchers, we have developed an amplicon reporting format which captures both sample preparation and bioinformatic processing metadata and stores processed amplicon data as a paired abundance table and sequencing file to maximize the potential for re-use of these data. To aid in the adoption of accessible and reproducible analysis workflows, this reporting format was developed in concert with amplicon functionality within the Department of Energy’s Systems Biology Knowledgebase (KBase) to ensure common data and metadata requirements and facilitate seamless transfer between these platforms. This dataset contains support documentation for the amplicon reporting format (README.md and instructions.md), templates for both bioinformatic and sequencing metadata (amplicon_bioinformatic_metadata_template_2021_10_03.csv and amplicon_sequencing_metadata_template_2021_10_03.csv), a crosswalk indicating how this reporting format relates to the current MIxS format (ESSDIVE-MIxS_crosswalk.csv), a list of available instrument terms (amplicon_seq_instrument_terms_2021_10_03.csv), a map between QIIME2 parameter settings and metadata fields (amplicon_qiime2_plugin_metadata_map.csv), a data dictionary (amplicon_CSV_dd.csv), and file-level metadata (amplicon_FLMD.csv).

Diving into a holographic superconductor

Charged black holes in anti-de Sitter space become unstable to forming charged scalar hair at low temperatures T < T_\text{c} T < T c . This phenomenon is a holographic realization of superconductivity. We look inside the horizon of these holographic superconductors and find intricate dynamical behavior. The spacetime ends at a spacelike Kasner singularity, and there is no Cauchy horizon. Before reaching the singularity, there are several intermediate regimes which we study both analytically and numerically. These include strong Josephson oscillations in the condensate and possible `Kasner inversions’ in which after many e-folds of expansion, the Einstein-Rosen bridge contracts towards the singularity. Due to the Josephson oscillations, the number of Kasner inversions depends very sensitively on T T , and diverges at a discrete set of temperatures \{T_n\} { T n } that accumulate at T_c T c . Near these T_n T n , the final Kasner exponent exhibits fractal-like behavior.
