A Deep Space Optical Communications Demonstration with the Galileo Spacecraft on its Way to Jupiter (abstract)

The GOPEX (Galileo Optical communications from an Earth-based transmitter) demonstration was performed from transmitter sites at Table Mountain Observatory, CA and Starfire Optical Range, NM. The experiment was done over an eight day period, December 9 through December 16 as Galileo receded from Earth on its way to Jupiter. At a range of 6 million kilometers (15 times the Earth-Moon distance), the transmission from Table Mountain Observatory eight days after Earth-flyby represents the longest range for laser transmission and detection.

Deep space optical communications link availability and data volume

Optical links from a spacecraft at planetary distance to a ground-based receiver presume a cloud free line of site (CFLOS). Future ground-based optical reeiving networks, should they be implemented, will rely on site diversity of could cover to increase link availability.

Dual-Pulse Pulse Position Modulation (DPPM) for Deep-Space Optical Communications: Performance and Practicality Analysis

Due to its simplicity and robustness against wavefront distortion, pulse position modulation (PPM) with photon counting detector has been seriously considered for long-haul optical wireless systems. This paper evaluates the dual-pulse case and compares it with the conventional single-pulse case. Analytical expressions for symbol error rate and bit error rate are first derived and numerically evaluated, for the strong, negative-exponential turbulent atmosphere; and bandwidth efficiency and throughput are subsequently assessed. It is shown that, under a set of practical constraints including pulse width and pulse repetition frequency (PRF), dual-pulse PPM enables a better channel utilization and hence a higher throughput than it single-pulse counterpart. This result is new and different from the previous idealistic studies that showed multi-pulse PPM provided no essential information-theoretic gains than single-pulse PPM.

Photonic Lanterns Applied to Deep Space Optical Communication Receivers

This presentation will begin with an introduction to the design aspects of photon counting optical communications light coupling to detectors. The discussion will continue an introduction to the trade space of light coupling and detector architectures; including solutions that use a photonic lantern. The explored features of the alternative designs will be presented as well as a discussion of remaining aspects that need to be explored.
