Liquid desiccant based dehumidification and cooling system

A liquid desiccant system including a high desorber, a low desorber, and an absorber that are in fluid communication with a working solution, where the high desorber provides rejected water vapor from the working fluid for condensation in a condenser of the low desorber that provides heat for rejection of additional water from the working solution in the low desorber effectively multiplying the heat provided for desorption. The low desorber provided the concentrated working solution to the absorber where water from ambient air is condensed into the concentrated working solution to provide a dilute working solution within a working solution conduit of the absorber that is thermally coupled to an internal cooler of the absorber. In some embodiments, the working solution can be an aqueous solution of at least one ionic liquid.

Cytology of long-term desiccation in the desert cyanobacterium Chroococcidiopsis (Chroococcales)

Young and old cultures (up to 66 months) of two Chroococcidiopsis sp. strains isolated from the Negev desert, Israel, were examined by epifluorescence and electron microscopy. In old cultures, cell viability and autofluorescence were lower than in young cultures. An increase was seen with age in the polysaccharide content of the sheaths of nanocytes and nanocyte mother cells, and a decrease of phycobiliproteins was also seen. In the oldest cultures most of the cells were dead and in various stages of degeneration. Single living cells were scattered among the dead ones. No resting cells were formed in the oldest cultures, but many cell groups showed highly electron-dense sheaths and, in the cytoplasm, ribosomes and glycogen. These changes in cell structure may have a role in preventing water loss from the cell.

Adhesion-force micro-scale study of desiccating granular material

Experiments on five-, four-, three- and two-wet-hydrophilic-grain clusters were performed to investigate evolution of adhesion of granular media during drying on the micro-scale. The experiments show that the adhesion-force of a cluster initially grows at most to three times the original value before decreasing to zero by the end of evaporation. The adhesion-force is composed of capillary pressure force acting over the liquid/solid contact surface area, and surface tension forces acting over the three-phase contact perimeter length. This is in contrast with most macro-scale phenomenological models, in which the only desaturation process variables affecting strength are suction and saturation. Both the contact surface area and contact perimeter length are reduced to zero upon complete liquid evaporation. The morphology of an evaporating water body evolves through slow flow controlled by evaporation rate, interrupted by various modes of fast air entry, which are non-equilibrium jumps of liquid/gas interfaces (Haines jumps). The instabilities involve large adhesion force discontinuities and substantial water mass reconfiguration with water flow in an extremely short time, which makes the process transient. The reconfigurations can reduce the original multi-grain water clusters to four-, three- and two-grain clusters by way of three different instability modes: of thin-sheet instability, or meniscus snap-through instability, depending on the sign of the Gauss curvature of the liquid surface, or finally, for two-grain bridges only, a liquid wire pinch-off. For larger meso-scale assemblies, however, the global adhesion-force evolution is little affected by the jumps. The air entries are potential sites for drying cracks. The (approximately) calculated capillary pressure for two- and three-grain clusters, in no cases is seen to reach high values, predicted from water retention curves.

Hydrogen/Metal Hydride Based Heat Pump System for Large HVAC Applications Utilizing an Ionic Liquid Desiccant Subsystem [Slides]

A multi-stage electrochemical hydrogen compressor incorporates membrane-electrode-assemblies (MEAs) separated by proton exchange membranes (PEMs) in series to reach higher pressures, when a current is passed through the MEA protons and electrons are generated at the anode. The protons are electrochemically driven across the membrane to the cathode, after which they combine with the rerouted electrons to form hydrogen, which is fed to the hydrogen compressor to be oxidized at the anode of each cell to form protons and electrons. This type of compressor has no moving parts and can be applied to refrigeration systems technologies. This project investigated the viability of commercialization of heat pumps based on electrochemical compressor technology.

Next-Generation Desiccant-Based Gas Clothes Dryer Systems

The goal of the project is to develop an advanced gas clothes dryer system demonstrating significant improvements in fuel efficiency and drying performance compared to current gas clothes dryer technologies. The new system decouples latent and sensible loads to effectively utilize the latent heat associated with laundry moisture as an advantageous energy source. In other words, the system captures the waste latent heat from moisture produced during the fabric-drying process and reuses it to improve drying efficiency.

Survival of soil bacteria during prolonged desiccation.

A determination was made of the kinds and numbers of bacteria surviving when two soils were maintained in the laboratory under dry conditions for more than half a year. Certain non-spore-forming bacteria were found to survive in the dry condition for long periods. A higher percentage of drought-tolerant than drought-sensitive bacteria was able to grow at low water activities. When they were grown in media with high salt concentrations, bacteria generally became more tolerant of prolonged drought and they persisted longer. The percent of cells in a bacterial population that remained viable when exposed to drought stress varied with the stage of growth.
