NOAA's oceanography studies under the Earth Resources Survey Program

Some results are presented of Earth Resources Survey Program studies conducted on: (1) Defining and developing methods of suppressing system noise and cloud contamination in satellite measurements of infrared window radiation. (2) Relating sea surface temperature patterns in the Gulf Stream and Gulf of Mexico to associated thermal front structure with aid of infrared data from Nimbus or ITOS. (3) Testing the feasibility of mapping sea surface roughness and low level wind speed over tropical oceans by means of ATS imagery in sun glitter zones. (4) Microwave radiometer measurements from aircraft and their usefulness and limitations for all-weather mapping of surface roughness, sea ice conditions, and possible surface temperature. (5) Evaluation of scanning radiometer data from ITOS for purposes of mapping snow and ice conditions.

Phase 1 of the earth resources data analysis program

Research completed in the Earth Resources Data Analysis Program is discussed along with recommendations for future study. Projects discussed include use of the Cholesky decomposition in feature selection and classification algorithms; optimal feature selection and extraction, probability density estimation and nonparametric classifiers; use of spatial information in classification; and model for crop row reflectance. The installation of LARSYS on the ICSA's IBM 370/155 is discussed, and a list of technical reports is included.

Sensitometric data for earth resources film

Sensitometry is applied to all photographic earth resources mission film processing. The exposure is made using an intensity modulated sensitometer with a 2850 K source filtered to produce a 5500 K spectral distribution. In addition, any filters used on the sensor are included in the sensitometer filter pack in order to accurately simulate the exposure conditions. The modulator consists of a continuous carbon wedge and a 20-step carbon step tablet.

Earth Resources Laboratory Applications Software (ELAS)

Implementation of the Earth Resources Laboratory applications software (ELAS) system is described. A Data General Eclipse model S/230 minicomputer is employed for image processing of LANDSAT data. A 16 bit word is used, and the smaller addressability necessitates reducing some of the array sizes. All INTEGER*4 variables were changed to REAL. Interfacing the ELAS software to Data General's FORTRAN callable runtime routines required rewriting the input/output routines and the subroutines that bring in the various overlays. Overlay relinking is required when a change is made in resident routines. The ELAS system and its user documentation is evaluated.

An integrated study of earth resources in the state of California using remote sensing techniques

The University of California has been conducting an investigation which seeks to determine the usefulness of modern remote sensing techniques for studying various components of California's earth resources complex. Most of the work has concentrated on California's water resources, but with some attention being given to other earth resources as well and to the interplay between them and California's water resources.

Investigation of transient earth resources phenomena: Continuation study

Calculated sensitivity requirements for an earth resource satellite in a geostationary orbit are reported. Radiance levels at the satellite sensor were computed for twenty top-priority Synchronous Earth Observatory Satellite (SEOS) applications. The observation requirements were reviewed and re-evaluated in terms of spectral band definition, spectral signatures of targets and backgrounds, observation time, and site location. With these data and an atmospheric attenuation and scattering model, the total radiances observed by the SEOS sensor were calculated as were the individual components contributed by the target, target variations, and the atmosphere.

A survey of earth resources on Apollo 9 photography

The types of photography obtained on the Apollo 9 mission and on concurrent flights made by supporting aircraft are described. The need for earth resource surveys and the value of aircraft and spacecraft as the platforms from which to make such surveys are considered along with the rational for using multiband photography and the means by which such photography can be enhanced. Aerial and space photographs are presented and analyzed. The feasibility of conducting earth resource surveys by means of space photography is discussed and results are summarized.

Development of the data base for near-Earth resources

Development of the data base for near-Earth resources was begun. Specific items accomplished were: (1) Definition of data base contents via discussions among the PSI staff and outside scientist such as Lucy McFadden and Mark Skyes; (2) Discussion/demonstration of dBase capabilities and possible organization of file(s) with L. Alvarez, Steward Observatory; (3) Data base entries for near-Earth asteroids consisting of data from the Russian ephemeris, a forthcoming review chapter for the Asteroids 2 book, and other literature; and (4) Development of a list of asteroid observers worldwide to be contacted during the coordinated phase of the project. A copy of the data base as it now exists is included.

The NASA earth resources spectral information system: A data compilation

The NASA Earth Resources Spectral Information System and the information contained therein are described. It contains an ordered, indexed compilation of natural targets in the optical region from 0.3 to 45.0 microns. The data compilation includes approximately 100 rock and mineral, 2600 vegetation, 1000 soil, and 60 water spectral reflectance, transmittance, and emittance curves. Most of the data have been categorized by subject, and the curves in those subject areas have been plotted on a single graph. Those categories with too few curves and miscellaneous categories have been plotted as single-curve graphs. Each graph, composite of single, is fully titled to indicate curve source and is indexed by subject to facilitate user retrieval.
