Electron-He(+) P-wave Elastic Scattering and Photoabsorption in Two-electron Systems

In a previous paper [Bhatia, Phys. Rev. A 69,032714 (2004)], electron-hydrogen P-wave scattering phase shifts were calculated using the optical potential approach based on the Feshbach projection operator formalism. This method is now extended to the singlet and triplet electron-He(+) P-wave scattering in the elastic region. Phase shifts are calculated using Hylleraas-type correlation functions with up to 220 terms. Results are rigorous lower bounds to the exact phase shifts and they are compared to phase shifts obtained from the method of polarized orbitals and close-coupling calculations. The continuum functions calculated here are used to calculate photoabsorption cross sections. Photoionization cross sections of He and photodetachment cross sections of H(-) are calculated in the elastic region, i.e. leaving He(+) and H in their respective ground states, and compared with previous calculations. Radiative attachment rates are also calculated.

D-Wave Electron-H, -He+, and -Li2+ Elastic Scattering and Photoabsorption in P States of Two-Electron Systems

In previous papers [A. K. Bhatia, Phys. Rev. A 85, 052708 (2012); 86, 032709 (2012); 87, 042705 (2013)] electron-H, -He+, and -Li2+ P-wave scattering phase shifts were calculated using the variational polarized orbital theory. This method is now extended to the singlet and triplet D-wave scattering in the elastic region. The long-range correlations are included in the Schrodinger equation by using the method of polarized orbitals variationally. Phase shifts are compared to those obtained by other methods. The present calculation provides results which are rigorous lower bonds to the exact phase shifts. Using the presently calculated D-wave and previously calculated S-wave continuum functions, photoionization of singlet and triplet P states of He and Li+ are also calculated, along with the radiative recombination rate coefficients at various electron temperatures.

Elastic scattering of 400-MeV protons by Pb-208

Cross-section and analyzing-power angular distributions for elastic scattering of 400-MeV protons by Pb-208 have been measured between 3 and 51 deg. Results have been compared to second-order Kerman-McManus-Thaler (1959) calculations of the optical potential. There is evidence that free nucleon-nucleon scattering amplitudes do not adequately describe nucleon propagation in nuclear matter at this energy.

Efficient Computation of Doppler-Broadened Elastic Scattering Kernel Moments Using Ladder-Operator Formulation

Anefficient routine for computing Legendre moments of the Doppler-broadened elastic scattering kernel, including resonance scattering effects, has been implemented in the ISOXML module of Griffin. Isotropic scattering in the center-of-mass system and the ideal gas model for target motion are assumed. A ladder-operator formulation is introduced to compute all Legendre moments from order 0 to N simultaneously, enabling near-linear scaling of computational cost with respect to the maximum Legendre order. A physics-based strategy for constructing outgoing energy grids has also been developed, in which a tailored base grid is combined with adaptive refinement to maintain accuracy while limiting the number of outgoing energy points. For energies between resonances, a constant cross-section model is employed to further reduce computational cost. In addition, a quantitative criterion is derived to determine isotope-wise cut-off incident energies based on a prescribed up-scattering probability coverage. For 238U, up to incident energies of approximately 75, 230, and 661 eV at 294, 900, and 2500 K (corresponding to a 2% up-scattering probability threshold), computation of P0 kernels requires 1–8 s and computation of P0–P5 kernels requires 0.4–4 min using a single thread, while maintaining 1–3% relative error in up-scattering probability. These results demonstrate that the proposed formulation enables accurate and computationally practical Doppler-broadened kernel generation for online multigroup cross-section production in Griffin.

Quantum mechanical study of elastic scattering and rotational excitation of CO by electrons

Coupling calculations of differential, integral, and momentum transfer cross sections for pure elastic scattering and rotational excitation of CO by electron impact are reported. The calculations are based on a static charge distribution that has correct dipole and quadrupole moments, has cusps at the nuclei, and is augmented by an SCF treatment of charge polarization and a local approximation for exchange. The rotationally summed cross sections, with no adjustable parameters in the scattering calculation, are in reasonably good agreement with the experimental cross sections but are somewhat larger at small scattering angles.

Analytic evaluation of hydrogen neutron elastic scattering moments with free-gas thermal treatment compared to NJOY

In this article, we present an analytic approach to evaluate Legendre moments of hydrogen neutron elastic scattering differential cross section, with and without free-gas thermal treatment. The results for the zero-th (P 0 ) and first (P 1 ) moments are given and compared against a 138-group cross sections produced by NJOY. An MCNP thin-wire test was employed as an independent verification for our analytic model for the free-gas zero-th moment. Excellent agreement was observed between the analytic result and MCNP prediction. They both suggest that an increased thermal cut-off in NJOY THERMR module is advisable for higher accuracy. Discrepancy was also found between the analytic model and NJOY multi-group cross section for the first order Legendre moments of the differential cross section, which might indicate a numerical anomaly in NJOY.

Inversion problem for ion-atom differential elastic scattering.

The paper describes a practical application of Remler's (1971) method by which one constructs a set of phase shifts from high resolution measurements of the differential elastic scattering of protons by rare-gas atoms. These JWKB phase shifts are then formally inverted to determine the corresponding intermolecular potentials. The validity of the method is demonstrated by comparing an intermolecular potential obtained by direct inversion of experimental data with a fairly accurate calculation by Wolniewicz (1965).

Elastic scattering and rotational excitation of H 2 by electron impact: Convergent close-coupling calculations

We apply the adiabatic-nuclei molecular convergent close-coupling (MCCC) method to the study of elastic scattering and rotational excitation of H 2 by 0.01–20-eV electrons. Integral cross sections are presented for all rotational transitions with |Δ⁢N| ≤ 2 and N i = 0–31 within the v = 0 vibrational level and differential cross sections for a selection of transitions. Agreement with the available measurements and previous calculations is mostly excellent, depending on the transition and incident energy. Finally, we suggest possible reasons, and argue for the accuracy of the MCCC data.

From Elastic Scattering to Central Exclusive Production: Physics with Forward Protons at RHIC

In this work, we describe a physics program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) with tagged forward protons. The program started with the proton-proton elastic scattering experiment (PP2PP), for which a set of Rosman Pot stations was built. The PP2PP experiment took data at RHIC as a dedicated experiment at the beginning of RHIC operations. To expand the physics program to include non-elastic channels with forward protons, like Central Exclusive Production (CEP), Central Production (CP) and Single Diffraction DIssociation (SD), the experiment with its equipment was merged with the STAR experiment at RHIC. Consequently the expanded program, which included both elastic and inelastic channels became part of the physics program and operations of the STAR experiment. In this paper we shall describe the physics results obtained by the PP2PP and STAR experiments to date.

Evaluation of phase shifts for nonrelativistic elastic scattering using quantum computers

Simulations of scattering processes are essential in understanding the physics of our universe. Computing relevant scattering quantities from ab initio methods is extremely difficult on classical devices because of the substantial computational resources needed. Here, this work reports the development of an algorithm that makes it possible to obtain phase shifts for generic nonrelativistic elastic scattering processes on a quantum computer. This algorithm is based on extracting phase shifts from the direct implementation of the real-time evolution. The algorithm is improved by a variational procedure making it more accurate and resistant to the quantum noise. The reliability of the algorithm is first demonstrated by means of classical numerical simulations for different potentials and later tested on existing quantum hardware, specifically on IBM quantum processors.

Nonlocal Structure of the Leading Order ab initio Effective Potentials for Proton Elastic Scattering from Light Nuclei

Based on the spectator expansion of the multiple scattering series we employ a chiral next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) nucleon-nucleon interaction on the same footing in the structure as well as in the reaction calculation to obtain an in leading-order consistent effective potential for nucleon-nucleus elastic scattering, which includes the spin of the struck target nucleon. Here, as an example we present proton scattering off $^{12}$C.

Positron-inert gas differential elastic scattering

Measurements are being made in a crossed beam experiment of the relative elastic differential cross section (DCS) for 5 to 300 eV positrons scattering from inert gas atoms (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe) in the angular range from 30 to 134 deg. Results obtained at energies around the positronium (Ps) formation threshold provide evidence that Ps formation and possibly other inelastic channels have an effect on the elastic scattering channel.
