Delay compensation in integrated communication and control systems. I - Conceptual development and analysis

A procedure for compensating for the effects of distributed network-induced delays in integrated communication and control systems (ICCS) is proposed. The problem of analyzing systems with time-varying and possibly stochastic delays could be circumvented by use of a deterministic observer which is designed to perform under certain restrictive but realistic assumptions. The proposed delay-compensation algorithm is based on a deterministic state estimator and a linear state-variable-feedback control law. The deterministic observer can be replaced by a stochastic observer without any structural modifications of the delay compensation algorithm. However, if a feedforward-feedback control law is chosen instead of the state-variable feedback control law, the observer must be modified as a conventional nondelayed system would be. Under these circumstances, the delay compensation algorithm would be accordingly changed. The separation principle of the classical Luenberger observer holds true for the proposed delay compensator. The algorithm is suitable for ICCS in advanced aircraft, spacecraft, manufacturing automation, and chemical process applications.

Feedforward/feedback control synthesis for performance and robustness

Both feedforward and feedback control approaches for uncertain dynamical systems are investigated. The control design objective is to achieve a fast settling time (high performance) and robustness (insensitivity) to plant modeling uncertainty. Preshapong of an ideal, time-optimal control input using a 'tapped-delay' filter is shown to provide a rapid maneuver with robust performance. A robust, non-minimum-phase feedback controller is synthesized with particular emphasis on its proper implementation for a non-zero set-point control problem. The proposed feedforward/feedback control approach is robust for a certain class of uncertain dynamical systems, since the control input command computed for a given desired output does not depend on the plant parameters.

Decoupling control synthesis for an oblique-wing aircraft

Interest in oblique-wing aircraft has surfaced periodically since the 1940's. This concept offers some substantial aerodynamic performance advantages but also has significant aerodynamic and inertial cross-coupling between the aircraft longitudinal and lateral-directional axes. This paper presents a technique for synthesizing a decoupling controller while providing the desired stability augmentation. The proposed synthesis procedure uses the concept of a real model-following control system. Feedforward gains are selected on the assumption that perfect model-following conditions are satisfied. The feedback gains are obtained by using eigensystem assignment, and the aircraft is stabilized by using partial state feedback. The effectiveness of the control laws developed in achieving the desired decoupling is illustrated by application to linearized equations of motion of an oblique-wing aircraft for a given flight condition.

Design of force/position controllers for manipulators

The paper presents simple methods for the design of adaptive force and position controllers for robot manipulators within the hybrid control architecture. The force controller is composed of an adaptive PID feedback controller, an auxiliary signal and a force feedforward term, and achieves tracking of desired force setpoints in the constraint directions. The position controller consists of adaptive feedback and feedforward controllers and an auxiliary signal; and accomplishes tracking of desired position trajectories in the free directions. The controllers are capable of compensating for dynamic cross-couplings that exist between the position and force control loops in the hybrid control architecture. The adaptive controllers do not require knowledge of the complex dynamic model or parameter values of the manipulator or the environment. The proposed control schemes are computationally fast and suitable for implementation in on-line control with high sampling rates.

Real time thermal imaging of high temperature semiconductor melts

A real time thermal imaging system with temperature resolution better than + or - 1 C and spatial resolution of better than 0.5 mm was developed and applied to the analysis of melt surface thermal field distributions in both Czochralski and liquid encapsulated Czochralski (LEC) growth configurations. The melt is viewed in near normal incidence by a high resolution charge coupled device camera to which is attached a very narrow bandpass filter. The resulting image is digitized and processed using a pipelined pixel processor operating at an effective 40 million operations per second thus permitting real time high frequency spatial and temporal filtering of the high temperature scene. A multi-pixel averaging algorithm was developed which permits localized, low noise sensing of temperature variations at any location in the hot zone as a function of time. This signial is used to implement initial elements of a feedforward growth control scheme which is aimed at reducing disturbances to the melt caused by the batch nature of the growth process. The effect of magnetic melt stabilization on radial melt temperature distributions was measured using this technique. Problems associated with residual internal reflections and non-optimized path geometry are discussed.

On the validity of the double integrator approximation in deep space formation flying

Free-flying models are commonly used f o r path planning and open loop control design (i. e., guidance design) and translational feedback control design (i. e., control design) for deep space precision formation flying. The free flying model, essentially a double integrator, results from discarding small terms in the relative spacecraft equations of motion. While the magnitude of these discarded terms may be small, one must show that their dynamic effects are small as compared to the precision performance requirements. We do so by deriving a theoretical method for bounding the difference between the solution of a nonlinear truth model of the relative translational spacecraft dynamics and a Simplified linear time-invariant model. Presently, the method incorporates feedforward and static output feedback control. The method is applied to a Terrestrial Planet Finder- based example. Using only feedforward control (guidance) the free-flying model and a Hill- Clohessy- Wiltshire Equations-based model are shown to be accurate to 1 c m for up to 4 and 30 hours, respectively. Also shown is that the simplest free-flying model may not be sufficient for low-gain feedback control design-closed-loop tracking errors can be as large as 8 meters.

On dynamics and control of multi-link flexible space manipulators

In this paper dynamics, inverse dynamics, and control problems for multi-link flexible space manipulators are presented. In deriving the flexible manipulator dynamics the following are assumed: flexible deformations are relatively small; angular rates of the links are much smaller than their fundamental frequencies; nonlinear terms (centrifugal and Coriolis forces) in the flexible manipulator model are the same as those in the rigid body model. These assumptions are reasonable for large space manipulators, such as the space crane. Flexible displacements are measured with respect to the rigid body configuration, for which a linear time-varying system is obtained. The inverse dynamics problem consists of determination of joint torques, given tip trajectory, such that joint angles in flexible configuration are equal to the angles in the rigid body configuration. The manipulator control system consists of the feedforward compensation and feedback control loops. Simulation results of a two-link space crane with large payload show that the performance of this linearized dynamics and control approach is reasonable and robust subject to parameter variations during slew operations.

Passivity In Analysis Of Robustness Of A Control System

Robustness margin (measure of degree of passivity) defined. Paper presents new approach to analysis of stability of multivariable feedforward-and-feedback control system consisting of exponentially stable linear time-invariant (LTI) feedforward subsystem and nonlinear time-varying (NTV) or dynamic feedback subsystem. New method based on notion of passivity, quantified by robustness margin. Margin provides bound on magnitudes of perturbations, below which perturbations will not make system unstable.

Control of a flexible bracing manipulator: Integration of current research work to realize the bracing manipulator

All research results about flexible manipulator control were integrated to show a control scenario of a bracing manipulator. First, dynamic analysis of a flexible manipulator was done for modeling. Second, from the dynamic model, the inverse dynamic equation was derived, and the time domain inverse dynamic method was proposed for the calculation of the feedforward torque and the desired flexible coordinate trajectories. Third, a tracking controller was designed by combining the inverse dynamic feedforward control with the joint feedback control. The control scheme was applied to the tip position control of a single link flexible manipulator for zero and non-zero initial condition cases. Finally, the contact control scheme was added to the position tracking control. A control scenario of a bracing manipulator is provided and evaluated through simulation and experiment on a single link flexible manipulator.

Neural controller for adaptive movements with unforeseen payloads

A theory and computer simulation of a neural controller that learns to move and position a link carrying an unforeseen payload accurately are presented. The neural controller learns adaptive dynamic control from its own experience. It does not use information about link mass, link length, or direction of gravity, and it uses only indirect uncalibrated information about payload and actuator limits. Its average positioning accuracy across a large range of payloads after learning is 3 percent of the positioning range. This neural controller can be used as a basis for coordinating any number of sensory inputs with limbs of any number of joints. The feedforward nature of control allows parallel implementation in real time across multiple joints.

Recent National Transonic Facility Test Process Improvements (Invited)

This paper describes the results of two recent process improvements; drag feed-forward Mach number control and simultaneous force/moment and pressure testing, at the National Transonic Facility. These improvements have reduced the duration and cost of testing. The drag feedforward Mach number control reduces the Mach number settling time by using measured model drag in the Mach number control algorithm. Simultaneous force/moment and pressure testing allows simultaneous collection of force/moment and pressure data without sacrificing data quality thereby reducing the overall testing time. Both improvements can be implemented at any wind tunnel. Additionally the NTF is working to develop and implement continuous pitch as a testing option as an additional method to reduce costs and maintain data quality.

Slewing maneuvers and vibration control of space structures by feedforward/feedback moment-gyro controls

This paper presents a moment-gyro control approach to the maneuver and vibration suppression of a flexible truss arm undergoing a constant slewing motion. The overall slewing motion is triggered by a feedforward input, and a companion feedback controller is employed to augment the feedforward input and subsequently to control vibrations. The feedforward input for the given motion requirement is determined from the combined CMG (Control Momentum Gyro) devices and the desired rigid-body motion. The rigid-body dynamic model has enabled us to identify the attendant CMG momentum saturation constraints. The task for vibration control is carried out in two stages; first in the search of a suitable CMG placement along the beam span for various slewing maneuvers, and subsequently in the development of Liapunov-based control algorithms for CMG spin-stabilization. Both analytical and numerical results are presented to show the effectiveness of the present approach.
