High laser fluence ITO coatings utilizing a Fabry-Perot thin film filter to reduce effective absorption

Laser-induced damage threshold of transparent conductors, such as Indium Tin Oxide (ITO), is limited by their high optical absorption due to free carriers. However, the effective absorption of a transparent conductor thin film can be reduced by an order of magnitude, without changing the electrical characteristics of the film, when placed in a low electric field section of a multilayer coating. A Fabry-Perot thin film interference filter has both high transmittance and low electric field positions, so it is an ideal thin film structure for this application. Although Fabry-Perot interference filters are not known as particularly high laser-induced damage resistant coatings due to their resonant characteristics, a laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) improvement of up to 8× was observed with this technique compared to single layer ITO coatings fabricated using either radio frequency magnetron sputtering or electron-beam deposition. Additionally, an approximately 4× LIDT improvement for a Fabry-Perot interference filter has been observed by the addition of ITO into the multilayer structure.

Code Development Supporting a Non-Thermal Source of High Fluence Warm X-Ray

A six-month research effort has advanced the hybrid kinetic-fluid modeling capability required for developing non-thermal warm x-ray sources on Z. The three particle treatments of quasi-neutral, multi-fluid, and kinetic are demonstrated in 1D simulations of an Ar gas puff. The simulations determine required resolutions for the advanced implicit solution techniques and debug hybrid particle treatments with equation-of-state and radiation transport. The kinetic treatment is used in preliminary analysis of the non-Maxwellian nature of a gas target. It is also demonstrates the sensitivity of the cyclotron and collision frequencies in determining the transition from thermal to non-thermal particle populations. Finally, a 2D Ar gas puff simulation of a Z shot demonstrates the readiness to proceed with realistic target configurations. The results put us on a very firm footing to proceed to a full LDRD which includes continued development transition criteria and x-ray yield calculation.

Characterizing the flux effect on the irradiation embrittlement of reactor pressure vessel steels using machine learning

In-service exposure to high-energy neutrons embrittles reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steels. An increase in the yield stress (Δσ y ) results in a corresponding increase in the brittle to ductile transition temperature (ΔT c ). Most existing models underpredict ΔT c at higher fluence following accelerated irradiations in test reactors. High fluence, up to 10 20 n/cm 2 in some cases, will be reached over extended RPV vessel operation of 80 years, or more, at low service flux. Embrittlement has been extensively studied in accelerated, higher flux test reaction irradiations. However, the use of test reactor data naturally raises the question of flux effects. Here, this study used a machine learning approach trained on a set of hardening data, covering a wide range of flux, fluence, and steel compositions to determine the interactive effects of both irradiation and material variables on Δσ y . The analysis included machine learning-based cross-plots of the variable dependence of Δσ y for six core steels (i.e., CM6, LC, LD, LG, LH, and LI), with controlled differences in their Cu and Ni contents. A primary objective is to evaluate an effective to actual fluence (Φt e /Φt) ratio, as a function of flux, fluence, and steel composition. This is information critical to properly use intermediate flux-high fluence data in calibrating a low flux-high fluence embrittlement model. The predicted Φt e /Φt is reasonably consistent with estimates previously derived from a physics-based solute recombination trap model.
