Refractory-metal compound impregnation of polytetrafluoroethylene

Process impregnates polytetrafluoroethylene /PTFE/ with rhenium or molybdenum compounds. The refractory metals impregnated PTFE combines chemical inertness with electrical conductivity. They are useful for electro-chemical cells, chemical processing equipment, catalysts, electrostatic charge removal, RF gasketing, and cable shielding.

Flat conductor cable connector with contact separation seal

Cable connector is developed in which each pair of contact elements is isolated by plastic cells and the mating interface is sealed by an elastic gasket. So insulated, the connector may be operated under high vacuum conditions at voltages up to 600 V ac without electrical leakage or intercontact ionization.

Random excitation of a panel-cavity system

An experimental investigation of the influence of random external sound field on cavity pressure and panel vibration is presented. The panel used was 10 in. x 20 in. x 0.05 in. aluminum alloy plate that was bonded onto a rectangular frame consisting of aluminum channel members welded together at their ends. By bonding the plate to the cavity in this way, a clamped edge boundary condition was approximated. A sealed cavity was constructed beneath the panel in such a way that the cavity depth could be varied in 2 in. increments from 12 in. to 2 in. deep. In order to vary the cavity depth, the cavity was built in sections. Each 2 in. section of the cavity was bolted to the other sections with rubber gaskets between them. The panel was excited acoustically by a Wolverine LS15, 20 watt loudspeaker driven by a B and K random noise generator, Type 1402. The external sound field was measured on the panel surface, using the 6 percent bandwidth of the frequency analyzer.

Refurbishment cost study of the thermal protection system of a space shuttle vehicle, phase 2

Labor costs and techniques associated with the refurbishment of representative TPS and their attach concepts suitable for space shuttle application have been identified on the basis of experimental tests. Ablative and reusable surface insulation TPS configurations were designed, fabricated, and tested on a full-scale mockup. The TPS attachment methods investigated included pi-strap, multiple mechanical fasteners, key/keyway, and direct bond concepts. Techniques for performing installation, inspection, repair and replacement of TPS components were studied by examining a variety of shop procedures. Major problem areas associated with these procedures and the designs to which they were applied were analyzed for several significant parameters such as handling, gaskets between joints, repair techniques, ablator plugs, etc. Results of time and motion studies of specific maintenance tasks, simulating operational procedures, were obtained. Using these data, refurbishment labor cost projections were generated for a representative Space Shuttle orbiter.

Thermal anomalies in stressed Teflon.

In the course of testing polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon) as a calorimetric gasketing material, serendipity revealed a thermal anomaly in stressed film that occurs concomitantly with the well-documented 25 C transition. The magnitude of the excess energy absorption - about 35 cal/g - is suggested to be related to the restricted thermal expansion of the film.

Low-closing-force seal

Compress soft, inert metal gasket between cone and corresponding socket to attach tubes to vessels containing gas samples. Technique effects seals with minimum of applied force and does not contaminate contents. Seal is formed when port connector is pushed firmly into its socket. Gold washer is deformed and forced to flow into imperfections in surfaces.

Soft, thermally conductive material

Silicon rubber filled with high percentage of silver-plated copper microspheres provides soft, thermally conductive seat for thermal switch. Material also could be used in thin sheet form to prevent corrosion between dissimilar metals while maintaining good thermal communication. It could be used as thermal gasketing.

Method of laminating structural members

A laminate is obtained by providing a lightweight core material, such as a honeycombed plastic or metal, within the cavity defined by an annular mold cavity frame. Face sheets, which are to be bonded to the core material, are provided on opposite sides of the frame and extend over the frame, thus sealing the core material in the cavity. An adhesive is provided between the core material and the face sheets and the combined thickness of the core material and adhesive is a close fit within the opposed face sheets. A gas tight seal, such as an O-ring gasket, is provided between the frame and the face sheet members to form a gas tight cavity between the face sheet members and the frame. External heat and pressure are used to bond the face sheets to the core material. Gas pressure is introduced into the sealed cavity to minimize out-gasing of the adhesive.

Evaluation of soft rubber goods

The performance of rubber goods suitable for use as O-rings, seals, gaskets, bladders and diaphragms under conditions simulating those of the space shuttle were studied. High reliability throughout the 100 flight missions planned for the space shuttle was considered of overriding importance. Accordingly, in addition to a rank ordering of the selected candidate materials based on prolonged fluid compatibility and sealability behavior, basic rheological parameters (such as cyclic hysteresis, stress relaxation, indicated modulus, etc.) were determined to develop methods capable of predicting the cumulative effect of these multiple reuse cycles.

Polyphosphazenes - New polymers with inorganic backbone atoms

Unique and useful properties of the class of nonhydrocarbon, nonhalocarbon, nonsilicone polymers known as polyphosphazenes are discussed at length. These polymers, with molecular weights to 4 million (degree of polymerization 15,000), can be fabricated as tubes, fibers, woven fabrics, flexible films, or plates, and many variants are stable to attack by water, bases, aqueous acids, jet fuels, oils, hydraulic fluids, gasoline, or other hydrocarbons. Rubbery polymers with these properties can be fashioned into flexible hose, fuel hose, gaskets, or O-rings. Since they do not provoke clotting reactions in blood, and reveal no carcinogenic effects to date, they are considered for internal prosthetic applications (replacement bone, temporary skin, heart valves), as biodegradable suturing material, as carriers for slow release of drugs, and as carriers for chemotherapeutic agents against cancers.

Advanced solid electrolyte cell for CO2 and H2O electrolysis

A solid electrolyte cell with improved sealing characteristics was examined. A tube cell was designed, developed, fabricated, and tested. Design concepts incorporated in the tube cell to improve its sealing capability included minimizing the number of seals per cell and moving seals to lower temperature regions. The advanced tube cell design consists of one high temperature ceramic cement seal, one high temperature gasket seal, and three low temperature silicone elastomer seals. The two high temperature seals in the tube cell design represent a significant improvement over the ten high temperature precious metal seals required by the electrolyzer drum design. For the tube cell design the solid electrolyte was 8 mole percent yttria stabilized zirconium oxide slip cast into the shape of a tube with electrodes applied on the inside and outside surfaces.
