Getting to the bottom of it: do laser-driven coils really work? (Final Technical Report)

Since claims of ultra-high (up to ~ 1.5 kiloTesla) magnetic fields appeared in the scientific literature, it became necessary to conduct controlled experiments to determine the validity of these claims and assess the real capability of laser-driven coils (LDCs) to produce high B-field to be used in HEDP (high energy density physics) experiments. This project assessed the viability of generating magnetic fields using LDCs. This was accomplished with a thorough analysis of several focused experiments on the OMEGA EP laser at LLE designed to measure the magnetic field inside LDCs. We demonstrated how problems with prior diagnostic analyses have led to overestimations of the magnetic fields generated from LDCs.

Producing Dollars from Produced Water: How we Get There and Why we Should

Recent studies have shown that produced water and drill cuttings from the development of unconventional shale in Appalachia has a significant source of valuable critical minerals, including lithium, putting Pennsylvania in a unique position to capitalize. This session presents how we capitalize on this opportunity to produce dollars from produced water, the opportunities, and the challenges.

Getting Started with Evaluations with Means and Uncertainties (EMU 3.0)

One of the most fundamental quantities in nuclear physics is the reaction cross section. A cross section represents the probability that a nuclear reaction will resolve through a given channel given a target nucleus and a projectile with a certain energy. A nuclear evaluation is a set of discrete data and interpolation rules to convert those discrete nuclear reaction data—such as the cross section—into a continuous function at arbitrary energies. Evaluated nuclear data files that can appear in Evaluated Nuclear Data File (ENDF) and Generalized Nuclear Data Structure (GNDS) formats, storing a “most-complete” discretized representation of nuclear data, based on both experimental measurements and theory models.

Longitudinal Solid P Longitudinal Solid Polarized Target for CL get for CLAS12 and Study of Spin AS12 and Study of Spin Structure of Nucleons

A suite of experiments measuring target-spin observables in electron-nucleon scattering (dubbed Run Group C) was conducted at Jefferson Lab's Hall B in Newport News, VA with a new polarized nuclear target known as 'APOLLO' (Ammonia POLarized LOngitudinally). This innovative target is engineered to seamlessly integrate with the advanced 12GeV CEBAF (Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility) accelerator and the Hall B CLAS12 (12 GeV CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer) detector array. The 'APOLLO' target harnesses the power of Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) to achieve longitudinal polarization of solid ammonia, thereby creating a net polarization in both protons (NH3) and deuterons (ND3). These samples are subjected to a 5 Tesla magnetic field produced by the CLAS12 spectrometer central solenoid, cooled to 1 K using helium evaporation, and subsequently exposed to microwave radiation at a frequency of 140 GHz. This project was made possible through a collaborative partnership between the Jefferson Lab Target Group, Old Dominion University, University of Virginia, Christopher Newport University, and the CLAS Collaboration. Integrating the APOLLO target into CLAS12 presented unique challenges because of its specific spatial and dimensional constraints. This dissertation will highlight the innovative solutions developed to address these challenges, including the creation of a new target material transport system, the incorporation of superconducting magnetic correction coils, and the development of a customized Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) system. In addition to a detailed description of the development and operation of APOLLO, and an overview of RGC, this document also describes the global data fitting of proton asymmetries in the Deep Inelastic scattering (DIS) and the Resonance regions, and it offers insights into the comprehensive analysis of target polarization data.

Novel, Simplified Air Delivery System Design Gets Commercialized

Typical air delivery systems require contractors to design systems that are complex, difficult to integrate into the framing and structural components of a home, and often do not meet the optimization demands of newer energy-efficient homes. This complex process can be a burden to already strained construction labor costs. However, a new technology simplifies duct system design to improve comfort and eliminate sources of installation error for residential air delivery systems.

Getting to Zero—and Beyond: California’s aspiration to become the first carbon-negative state appears to be achievable and affordable.

As a response to mounting concerns about the consequences of unabated climate change, California established in 2018 an aspirational goal of achieving a completely carbon-neutral economy by 2045, and becoming carbon negative after that. The state has long championed climate-friendly policies such as using energy more efficiently, generating power from renewable sources, and putting cleaner cars on the road, among other emissions-reduction strategies. Unfortunately, California’s own evaluations indicate that even when these are successful—after intensive electrification of the economy and a drastic shift away from fossil fuels—there will remain substantial greenhouse gas emissions. The residuals come from widespread small sources that are hard to control, and from larger sources that cannot be controlled in time.

Getting to 95

Members of the Tennessee Valley Public Power Association (TVPPA) have the opportunity to interconnect up to 5% of their annual energy requirements in self generation. TVA, their wholesale supplier, is encouraging solar. This presentation introduces IEEE 1547 2018 and provides some high level information on solar cost.
