Impact of Mg Substitution on the Structure, Stability, and Properties of the Na 2 Fe 2 F 7 Weberite Cathode

Of the few weberite-type Na-ion cathodes explored to date, Na 2 Fe 2 F 7 exhibits the best performance, with capacities up to 184 mAh/g and energy densities up to 550 Wh/kg reported for this material. However, the development of robust structure–property relationships for this material is complicated by its tendency to form as a mixture of metastable polymorphs, and transform to a lower-energy Na y FeF 3 perovskite compound during electrochemical cycling. Our first-principles-guided exploration of Fe-based weberite solid solutions with redox-inactive Mg 2+ and Al 3+ predicts an enhanced thermodynamic stability of Na 2 Mg x Fe 2–x F 7 as the Mg content is increased, and the x = 0.125 composition is selected for further exploration. We demonstrate that the monoclinic polymorph (space group C2/c) of Na 2 Fe 2 F 7 (Mg0) and of a new Mg-substituted weberite composition, Na 2 Mg 0.125 Fe 1.875 F 7 (Mg0.125), can be isolated using an optimized synthesis protocol. The impact of Mg substitution on the stability of the weberite phase during electrochemical cycling, and on the extent and rate of Na (de)intercalation, is examined. Irrespective of the Mg content, we find that the weberite phase is retained when cycling over a narrow voltage window (2.8–4.0 V vs Na/Na+). Over a wider voltage range (1.9–4.0 V), Mg0 shows steady capacity fade due to its transformation to the NayFeF3 perovskite phase, while Mg0.125 displays more reversible cycling and a reduced phase transformation. Yet, Mg incorporation also leads to kinetically limited Na extraction and a reduced overall capacity. These findings highlight the need for the continued compositional optimization of weberite cathodes to improve their structural stability while maximizing their energy density.

Structure of the Polymer Backbones in polyMOF Materials

The molecular connectivity of polymer–metal–organic framework (polyMOF) hybrid materials was investigated using density functional theory calculations and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. The architectural constraints that dictate the formation of polyMOFs were assessed by examining poly(1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid) (pbdc) polymers in two archetypical MOF lattices (UiO-66 and IRMOF-1). Modeling of the polyMOFs showed that in the IRMOF-1-type lattice, six, seven, and eight methylene (–CH 2 –) groups between 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (terephthalate, bdc 2– ) units can be accommodated without significant distortions, while in the UiO-66-type lattice, an optimal spacing of seven methylene groups between bdc 2– units is needed to minimize strain. Solid-state NMR supports these predictions and reveals pronounced spectral differences for the same polymer in the two polyMOF lattices. With seven methylene groups, polyUiO-66-7a shows 7 ± 3% of uncoordinated terephthalate linkers, while these are undetectable (<4%) in the corresponding polyIRMOF-1-7a. Additionally, NMR-detected backbone mobility is significantly higher in the polyIRMOF-1-7a than in the corresponding polyUiO-66-7a, again indicative of taut chains in the latter.

The solution structures and relative stability constants of lanthanide–EDTA complexes predicted from computation

Ligand selectivity to specific lanthanide (Ln) ions is key to the separation of rare earth elements from each other. Ligand selectivity can be quantified with relative stability constants (measured experimentally) or relative binding energies (calculated computationally). The relative stability constants of EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) with La 3+ , Eu 3+ , Gd 3+ , and Lu 3+ were predicted from relative binding energies, which were quantified using electronic structure calculations with relativistic effects and based on the molecular structures of Ln–EDTA complexes in solution from density functional theory molecular dynamics simulations. The protonation state of an EDTA amine group was varied to study pH ~7 and ~11 conditions. Further, simulations at 25 °C and 90 °C were performed to elucidate how structures of Ln–EDTA complexes varying with temperature are related to complex stabilities at different pH conditions. Relative stability trends are predicted from computation for varying Ln 3+ ions (La, Eu, Gd, Lu) with a single ligand (EDTA at pH ~11), as well as for a single Ln 3+ ion (La) with varying ligands (EDTA at pH ~7 and ~11). Changing the protonation state of an EDTA amine site significantly changes the solution structure of the Ln–EDTA complex resulting in a reduction of the complex stability. As a result, increased Ln–ligand complex stability is correlated to reduced structural variations in solution upon an increase in temperature.

Charge completeness and the massless charge lattice in F-theory models of supergravity

We prove that, for every 6D supergravity theory that has an F-theory description, the property of charge completeness for the connected component of the gauge group (meaning that all charges in the corresponding charge lattice are realized by massive or massless states in the theory) is equivalent to a standard assumption made in F-theory for how geometry encodes the global gauge theory by means of the Mordell-Weil group of the elliptic fibration. This result also holds in 4D F-theory constructions for the parts of the gauge group that come from sections and from 7-branes. We find that in many 6D F-theory models the full charge lattice of the theory is generated by massless charged states; this occurs for each gauge factor where the associated anomaly coefficient satisfies a simple positivity condition. We describe many of the cases where this massless charge sufficiency condition holds, as well as exceptions where the positivity condition fails, and analyze the related global structure of the gauge group and associated Mordell-Weil torsion in explicit F-theory models.

Label-Free Profiling of up to 200 Single-Cell Proteomes per Day Using a Dual-Column Nanoflow Liquid Chromatography Platform

Single-cell proteomics (SCP) has great potential to advance biomedical research and personalized medicine. The sensitivity of such measurements increases with low-flow separations (<100 nL/min) due to improved ionization efficiency, but the time required for sample loading, column washing, and regeneration in these systems can lead to low measurement throughput and inefficient utilization of the mass spectrometer. Herein, we developed a two-column liquid chromatography (LC) system that dramatically increases the throughput of label-free SCP using two parallel subsystems to multiplex sample loading, online desalting, analysis, and column regeneration. The integration of MS1-based feature matching increased proteome coverage when short LC gradients were used. The high-throughput LC system was reproducible between the columns, with a 4% difference in median peptide abundance and a median CV of 18% across 100 replicate analyses of a single-cell-sized peptide standard. An average of 621, 774, 952, and 1622 protein groups were identified with total analysis times of 7, 10, 15, and 30 min, corresponding to a measurement throughput of 206, 144, 96, and 48 samples per day, respectively. When applied to single HeLa cells, we identified nearly 1000 protein groups per cell using 30 min cycles and 660 protein groups per cell for 15 min cycles. Finally, we explored the possibility of measuring cancer therapeutic targets with a pilot study comparing the K562 and Jurkat leukemia cell lines. This work demonstrates the feasibility of high-throughput label-free single-cell proteomics.

Crystal structure of elvitegravir Form II, C 23 H 23 ClFNO 5

The crystal structure of elvitegravir Form II has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional theory techniques. Elvitegravir Form II crystallizes in space group P2 1 (#4) with a = 11.54842(7), b = 14.04367(5), c = 13.33333(8) Å, β = 90.0330(6)°, V = 2162.427(14) Å 3 , and Z = 4. The crystal structure consists of alternating layers of parallel molecules perpendicular to the b-axis. The mean planes of the oxoquinoline ring systems in molecules 1 and 2 are 1(22)-1 and -1(22)1. Between the stacks are layers of the halogenated phenyl rings. These exhibit herringbone stacking. In each molecule, the carboxylic acid group forms a strong intramolecular O–H∙∙∙O hydrogen bond to the nearby carbonyl group. The hydroxyl group of each molecule forms a strong hydrogen bond to the carbonyl group of the carboxylic acid of the other molecule. These O–H∙∙∙O hydrogen bonds link the molecules into dimers, with a graph set R2,2(18) > a > c. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™ (PDF®).

Tunable Crosslinked Ether Polymer Network Electrolytes for High‐Performance All‐Solid‐State Sodium Batteries

All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) are critical for achieving high energy density and enhanced safety. Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) offer key advantages over other electrolytes, including improved safety, flexibility, and interfacial contact. Among the SPEs, ether-based polymers are widely studied due to their ease of processing and high ionic conductivity (σi) in the amorphous state. In this work, the introduction of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMEMA) into an SPE matrix composed of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA), poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG2k), and sodium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (NaFSI) salt is investigated to facilitate the formation of amorphous, high σ i SPEs through end-group engineering and polymer ratio optimization. PEGMEMA enhances structural integrity via crosslinking with PEGDA through its methacrylate group, while its methyl end group aids ion conduction. A 2:1:7 ratio of PEGDA:PEGMEMA:PEG2k exhibits a σi of 1.16 x 10 -4 S cm -1 and oxidative stability up to 4.4 V at 60 °C. A solid-state cell incorporating this SPE, a Na 2/3 Ni 1/3 Mn 2/3 O 2 (NM12) cathode, and a sodium-metal anode demonstrates excellent cycling stability, retaining over 80 % of its initial capacity for 150 cycles at 60 °C. The findings highlight the potential of end-group engineering in improving the electrochemical performance of SPEs.
