Rational QCD loop amplitudes and quantum theories on twistor space

We show how curing an anomaly of the twistor uplift of self-dual Yang-Mills theory implies linear relations among one-loop, n-gluon, color-ordered subamplitudes in QCD, when all n gluon helicities are positive, or when exactly one is negative. We compute the number of linearly independent subamplitudes as determined by these relations, in terms of unsigned Stirling numbers. Then we use a momentum-twistor parametrization to show that there are no further linear dependencies.

On amplitudes and field redefinitions

We derive an off-shell recursion relation for correlators that holds at all loop orders. This allows us to prove how generalized amplitudes transform under generic field redefinitions, starting from an assumed behavior of the one-particle-irreducible effective action. The form of the recursion relation resembles the operation of raising the rank of a tensor by acting with a covariant derivative. This inspires a geometric interpretation, whose features and flaws we investigate.

Symmetry-enriched quantum spin liquids in (3 + 1)d

We use the intrinsic one-form and two-form global symmetries of (3+1)d bosonic field theories to classify quantum phases enriched by ordinary (0-form) global symmetry. Different symmetry-enriched phases correspond to different ways of coupling the theory to the background gauge field of the ordinary symmetry. The input of the classification is the higher-form symmetries and a permutation action of the 0-form symmetry on the lines and surfaces of the theory. From these data we classify the couplings to the background gauge field by the 0-form symmetry defects constructed from the higher-form symmetry defects. For trivial two-form symmetry the classification coincides with the classification for symmetry fractionalizations in (2 + 1)d. We also provide a systematic method to obtain the symmetry protected topological phases that can be absorbed by the coupling, and we give the relative ’t Hooft anomaly for different couplings. We discuss several examples including the gapless pure U(1) gauge theory and the gapped Abelian finite group gauge theory. As an application, we discover a tension with a conjectured duality in (3 + 1)d for SU(2) gauge theory with two adjoint Weyl fermions.

Fermionic shift symmetries in (anti) de Sitter space

We study extended shift symmetries that arise for fermionic fields on anti-de Sitter (AdS) space and de Sitter (dS) space for particular values of the mass relative to the curvature scale. We classify these symmetries for general mixed-symmetry fermionic fields in arbitrary dimension and describe how fields with these symmetries arise as the decoupled longitudinal modes of massive fermions as they approach partially massless points. For the particular case of AdS 4 , we look for non-trivial Lie superalgebras that can underly interacting theories that involve these fields. We study from this perspective the minimal such theory, the Akulov-Volkov theory on AdS 4 , which is a non-linear theory of a spin-1/2 Goldstino field that describes the spontaneous breaking of $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 supersymmetry on AdS 4 down to the isometries of AdS 4 . We show how to write the nonlinear supersymmetry transformation for this theory using the fermionic ambient space formalism. We also study the Lie superalgebras of candidate multi-field examples and rule out the existence of a supersymmetric special galileon on AdS 4 .

Bounding entanglement entropy with Clifford double cosets

Following on our previous work studying the orbits of quantum states under Clifford circuits via reachability graphs, we introduce contracted graphs whose vertices represent classes of quantum states with the same entropy vector. These contracted graphs represent the double cosets of the Clifford group, where the left cosets are built from the stabilizer subgroup of the starting state and the right cosets are built from the entropy-preserving operators. We study contracted graphs for stabilizer states, as well as 𝑊 states and Dicke states, discussing how the diameter of a state's contracted graph constrains the entropic diversity of its two-qubit Clifford orbit. We derive an upper bound on the number of entropy vectors that can be generated using any 𝑛-qubit Clifford circuit, for any quantum state. Here, we speculate on the holographic implications for the relative proximity of gravitational duals of states within the same Clifford orbit. Although we concentrate on how entropy evolves under the Clifford group, our double-coset formalism, and thus the contracted graph picture, is extendable to generic gate sets and generic state properties.

Generalized quasiharmonic approximation via space group irreducible derivatives

The quasiharmonic approximation (QHA) is the simplest nontrivial approximation for interacting phonons under constant pressure, bringing the effects of anharmonicity into temperature-dependent observables. Nonetheless, the QHA is often implemented with additional approximations due to the complexity of computing phonons under arbitrary strains, and the generalized QHA, which employs constant stress boundary conditions, has not been completely developed. In this work we formulate the generalized QHA, providing a practical algorithm for computing the strain state and other observables as a function of temperature and true stress. We circumvent the complexity of computing phonons under arbitrary strains by employing irreducible second-order displacement derivatives of the Born-Oppenheimer potential and their strain dependence, which are efficiently and precisely computed using the lone irreducible derivative approach. We formulate two complementary strain parametrizations: a discretized strain grid interpolation and a Taylor series expansion in symmetrized strain. We illustrate our approach by evaluating the temperature and pressure dependence of select elastic constants and the thermal expansion in thoria (ThO 2 ) using density functional theory with three exchange-correlation functionals. The QHA results are compared to our measurements of the elastic constant tensor using time-domain Brillouin scattering and inelastic neutron scattering. Our irreducible derivative approach simplifies the implementation of the generalized QHA, which will facilitate reproducible, data-driven applications.

Clifford orbits from cayley graph quotients

We describe the structure of the $n$-qubit Clifford group $\mathcal{C}_n$ via Cayley graphs, whose vertices represent group elements and edges represent generators. In order to obtain the action of Clifford gates on a given quantum state, we introduce a quotient procedure. Quotienting the Cayley graph by the stabilizer subgroup of a state gives a reduced graph which depicts the state's Clifford orbit. Using this protocol for $\mathcal{C}_2$, we reproduce and generalize the reachability graphs. Since the procedure is state-independent, we extend our study to non-stabilizer states, including the W and Dicke states. Furthermore, our new construction provides a more precise understanding of state evolution under Clifford circuit action.

Violating Kirchhoff’s Law of Thermal Radiation in Semitransparent Structures

Kirchhoff’s law of thermal radiation imposes a constraint on photon-based energy harvesting processes since part of the incident energy flux is inevitably emitted back to the source. By breaking the reciprocity of the system, it is possible to overcome this restriction and improve the efficiency of energy harvesting. Here, we design and analyze a semitransparent emitter that fully absorbs normally incident energy from a given direction with zero backward and unity forward emissivity. The nearly ideal performance with wavelength-scale thickness is achieved due to the magneto-optical effect and the guided-mode resonance engineered in the emitter structure. We derive the general requirements for the nonreciprocal emitter using the temporal coupled mode theory and the symmetry considerations. As a result, we provide a realistic emitter design based on a photonic crystal slab consisting of a magnetic Weyl semimetal and silicon.

Supramolecular meso -Trick: Ambidextrous Mirror Symmetry Breaking in a Liquid Crystalline Network with Tetragonal Symmetry

Bicontinuous and multicontinuous network phases are among nature's most complex structures in soft matter systems. Here, a chiral bicontinuous tetragonal phase is reported as a new stable liquid crystalline intermediate phase at the transition between two cubic phases, the achiral double gyroid and the chiral triple network cubic phase with an I 23 space group, both formed by dynamic networks of helices. The mirror symmetry of the double gyroid, representing a meso -structure of two enantiomorphic networks, is broken at the transition to this tetragonal phase by retaining uniform helicity only along one network while losing it along the other one. This leads to a conglomerate of enantiomorphic tetragonal space groups, P 4 1 2 1 2 and P 4 3 2 1 2. Phase structures and chirality were analyzed by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS), resonant soft X-ray scattering (RSoXS) at the carbon K-edge, and model-dependent SAXS/RSoXS simulation. In conclusion, our findings not only lead to a new bicontinuous network-type three-dimensional mesophase but also reveal a mechanism of mirror symmetry breaking in soft matter by partial meso -structure racemization at the transition from enantiophilic to enantiophobic interhelical self-assembly.

Report of the Snowmass 2021 Topical Group on Lattice Gauge Theory

Lattice gauge theory continues to be a powerful theoretical and computational approach to simulating strongly interacting quantum field theories, whose applications permeate almost all disciplines of modern-day research in High-Energy Physics. Whether it is to enable precision quark- and lepton-flavor physics, to uncover signals of new physics in nucleons and nuclei, to elucidate hadron structure and spectrum, to serve as a numerical laboratory to reach beyond the Standard Model, or to invent and improve state-of-the-art computational paradigms, the lattice-gauge-theory program is in a prime position to impact the course of developments and enhance discovery potential of a vibrant experimental program in High-Energy Physics over the coming decade. This projection is based on abundant successful results that have emerged using lattice gauge theory over the years: on continued improvement in theoretical frameworks and algorithmic suits; on the forthcoming transition into the exascale era of high-performance computing; and on a skillful, dedicated, and organized community of lattice gauge theorists in the U.S. and worldwide. The prospects of this effort in pushing the frontiers of research in High-Energy Physics have recently been studied within the U.S. decadal Particle Physics Planning Exercise (Snowmass 2021), and the conclusions are summarized in this Topical Report.

Lepton flavor violation by three units

The conservation of lepton flavor is a prediction of the Standard Model and is still an excellent approximate symmetry despite our observation of neutrino oscillations. Lepton flavor violation by one or two units has been discussed for decades, with several dedicated experiments exploring the vast model landscape but no discoveries so far. Here, we explore operators and processes that violate at least one lepton flavor by three units and identify testable signatures. In the Standard Model effective field theory, such operators already arise at mass dimension 7 and can be tested through their contributions to Michel parameters in leptonic decays. True neutrinoless charged-lepton flavor violation arises at mass dimension 10 and can realistically only be seen in the tau decay channels 𝜏 → $𝑒⁢𝑒⁢𝑒⁢\bar{𝜇}⁢\bar{𝜇}$ or 𝜏 → $𝜇⁢𝜇⁢𝜇\bar{𝑒}\bar{𝑒}$, for example in Belle II. Testable rates for these tau decays require light new particles and subsequently predict an avalanche of remarkably clean but so-far unconstrained collider signatures.

Zero curvature is a necessary and sufficient condition for a spin-orbital decomposition

There has been an extended debate regarding the existence of a spin-orbital decomposition of the angular momentum of photons and other massless particles. It was recently shown that there are both geometric and topological obstructions preventing any such decomposition. Here we show that any geometric connection on a particle’s state space induces a splitting of the angular momentum into two operators. These operators are well-defined angular momentum operators if and only if the connection has zero curvature. Massive particles have two canonical curved connections corresponding to boosts and rotations, respectively. Furthermore, these can be uniquely combined to produce a flat connection, and this gives a novel derivation of the Newton-Wigner position operator and the corresponding spin and orbital angular momenta for relativistic massive particles. When the mass is taken to zero, transverse boosts and rotations degenerate, leaving only a single connection for massless particles. This connection produces a commonly proposed splitting of the massless angular momentum into two operators. However, the connection is not flat, explaining why these operators do not satisfy the angular momentum commutation relations and are thus not true spin and orbital angular momentum operators.

Long-Range Interaction between Molecules with Electronic Degeneracy: Beyond the Born–Oppenheimer Approximation

Long-range intermolecular interaction plays an essential role in (ultra)cold collisions. For monomers with degenerate electronic states, an accurate description of the long-range interaction can be challenging due to the potential breakdown of the Born–Oppenheimer approximation. In this work, we developed a general method to construct long-range interaction potential energy surfaces (IPESs) between arbitrary molecules using the degenerate perturbation theory of Schrödinger. To further simplify the application of this method, a group-theoretical method is introduced to identify nonzero components of electrostatic properties of monomers, especially for the nonlinear molecules. To demonstrate this approach, we report the long-range IPESs of the O( 3 P)–OH( 2 Π) and OH( 2 Π)–OH( 2 Π) systems. The excellent agreement with ab initio calculations in large separations, even near electronic degeneracies, confirms the accuracy of our approach. The method is expected to lay the groundwork for the accurate investigation of (ultra)cold collisional dynamics involving open-shell species.

Pressure–Temperature–Magnetic Field Phase Diagram of Multiferroic (NH 4 ) 2 FeCl 5 ·H 2 O

We combined synchrotron-based infrared absorbance and Raman scattering spectroscopies with diamond anvil cell techniques and a symmetry analysis to explore the properties of multiferroic (NH 4 ) 2 FeCl 5 ·H 2 O under extreme pressure–temperature conditions. Compression-induced splitting of the Fe–Cl stretching, Cl–Fe–Cl and Cl–Fe–O bending, and NH 4 + librational modes defines two structural phase transitions, and a group–subgroup analysis reveals space group sequences that vary depending upon proximity to the unexpectedly wide order–disorder transition. Here, we bring these findings together with prior high-field work to develop the pressure–temperature–magnetic field phase diagram uncovering competing polar, chiral, and magnetic phases in this system.

Inhomogeneous time-reversal symmetry breaking in Sr 2 RuO 4

We show that the observed time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB) of the superconducting state in Sr 2 RuO 4 can be understood as originating from inhomogeneous strain fields near edge dislocations of the crystal. Specifically, we argue that, without strain inhomogeneities, Sr 2 RuO 4 is a single-component, time-reversal symmetric superconductor, likely with d x 2 -y 2 symmetry. However, due to the strong strain inhomogeneities generated by dislocations, a slowly decaying subleading pairing state contributes to the condensate in significant portions of the sample. As it phase winds around the dislocation, time-reversal symmetry is locally broken. Global phase locking and TRSB occur at a sharp Ising transition that is not accompanied by a change of the single-particle gap and yields a very small heat capacity anomaly. Our model thus explains the puzzling absence of a measurable heat capacity anomaly at the TRSB transition in strained samples and the dilute nature of the time-reversal symmetry broken state probed by muon spin rotation experiments. We propose that plastic deformations of the material may be used to manipulate the onset of broken time-reversal symmetry.

Generalized Ginsparg-Wilson relations

We give a general derivation of Ginsparg-Wilson relations for both Dirac and Majorana fermions in any dimension. These relations encode continuous and discrete chiral, parity and time-reversal anomalies and will apply to the various classes of free-fermion topological insulators and superconductors (in the framework of a relativistic quantum field theory in Euclidean spacetime). We show how to formulate the exact symmetries of the lattice action and the relevant index theorems for the anomalies. Published by the American Physical Society 2024
