The Technical and Economic Potential of Hydrogen within the United States

Hydrogen markets have an opportunity to grow as its value as an energy intermediate increases. Hydrogen’s estimated serviceable consumption potential in the United States is 106 MMT/yr which is a ten-fold increase over the current market size. That opportunity is driven primarily by increased demands for metals refining, biofuel and hydrocarbon production, supplementing the natural gas system, seasonal storage for the electricity grid, and fuel cell electric vehicles. The U.S. has many renewable, nuclear, and fossil resources that each could meet that demand itself. The economic potential, which considers both costs to produce hydrogen and willingness of applications to pay for it, is 22 to 41 MMT/yr. The range is impacted by factors that impact the cost to produce including the price of natural gas and the cost of electrolyzers. It is also impacted by competition to provide the same services as hydrogen including electrification.

The Potential of Hydrogen in a Decarbonized Future

Green hydrogen has become an interesting opportunity for utilities especially while considering a decarbonized future. This presentation will discuss how producing green hydrogen can benefit the grid when generation exceeds load and possible applications and markets for green hydrogen including injection into the natural gas system and as a fuel for dispatchable electricity generation during peak times. Technology and market status and challenges will also be identified.

High Efficacy Validation of Hydride Mega Tanks at ARIES Lab (HEVHY METAL)

The High Efficacy Validation of Hydride Mega Tanks at ARIES Lab (HEVHY METAL) project will advance materials-based hydrogen storage technologies by large-scale demonstration and identification of deployment pathways. This includes demonstrating how two metal hydride HY2MEGA subsystems are installed with megawatt-scale green hydrogen infrastructure; validating its performance via rates, capacities, and efficiencies; and investigating supply and demand side techno-economics.

Hydrogen Systems for PERformance-Based Value Stacking

The proposed technology (HYPER-V: HYdrogen Systems for PERformance based Value-stacking) represents a co-optimized control framework to dispatch hydrogen systems for serving complex commercial energy demands. HYPER-V aims at integrating hydrogen systems for a variety of use-cases in all energy markets including (but not limited to) grid services, transportation, and fuels. This presentation is the end-of-the-project merit review describing the outcomes.

Megawatt-Scale Low Temperature Electrolyzer Research Capability

The development and installation of a flexible low-temperature electrolyzer research capability at the multi-MW scale with integrated renewables will help lower the cost barrier to entry for electrolyzer manufactures needing at scale system and stack evaluation and enable more electrolyzer manufactures to accelerate to commercialization with building block scale demonstration and validation. This NREL capability represents a DOE HFTO investment to support the $1B DOE Clean Hydrogen Electrolysis Program working to achieve the Hydrogen Shot goal of $1 for 1 kg hydrogen in 1 decade, lower greenhouse gas emissions and criteria pollutants, build clean energy infrastructure, and provide pathways to private sector uptake.

HydroGEN Consortium: Advancements in Renewable Hydrogen Production

HydroGEN Energy Materials Network (EMN) is an U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) EERE Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO)-funded consortium that aims to accelerate the discovery and development of advanced water splitting materials (AWSM) for clean, low-cost hydrogen production. Materials innovations are key to enhancing performance, durability, and cost of hydrogen generation technologies. HydroGEN is focused on low technology readiness level AWS technologies, including low- (alkaline exchanged membrane electrolysis) and high-temperature electrolysis (proton-conducting solid oxide electrolysis), photoelectrochecmical (PEC) and solar thermochemical (STCH) water splitting. This presentation will provide an overview of the HydroGEN EMN and technical highlights of a few lab-led and FOA-awarded R&D projects. HydroGEN continues to grow its community of industry, university, and national laboratories, forming a national innovation ecosystem focused on renewable hydrogen production.
