Comparator With Noise Suppression

Comparator continuously and automatically adjusts noise immunity period. High-gain amplifier used in conjunction with multivibrator 4 to provide clear pulse to multivibrator 1 at first negative-going zero crossing of input signal. Once multivibrator 1 cleared, output goes to zero volts and not retriggered until next time positive input exceeds reference level. Since input signal noise at zero crossing does not exceed reference level, no effect on multivibrator 1 operation. Circuit fabricated using standard solid-state operational amplifiers, multivibrators, OR gates, and passive elements.

Suppression of Biodynamic Interference by Adaptive Filtering

Preliminary experimental results obtained in moving base simulator tests are presented. Both for pursuit and compensatory tracking tasks, a strong deterioration in tracking performance due to biodynamic interference is found. The use of adaptive filtering is shown to substantially alleviate these effects, resulting in a markedly improved tracking performance and reduction in task difficulty. The effect of simulator motion and of adaptive filtering on human operator describing functions is investigated. Adaptive filtering is found to substantially increase pilot gain and cross-over frequency, implying a more tight tracking behavior. The adaptive filter is found to be effective in particular for high-gain proportional dynamics, low display forcing function power and for pursuit tracking task configurations.

Conducting a wind sensing study

Signal-to-noise requirements, and how signal-to-noise determines wind velocity measurement accuracy were studied. A Nd:YAG-based system was found to be competitive with a CO2-based system. Hardware was developed for a coherent Nd:YAG LIDAR system, and is being integrated into a functioning system. A diode-pumped monolithic rod laser to be used as a reference oscillator, a high-power, single-mode ring laser, for use as a master oscillator, and a high-gain, multipass amplifier were constructed.

Electronic readout systems for microchannel plates

The modes of operation of position-sensitive electronic readout systems which use high-gain microchannel plate (MCP) electron multipliers are described, and their performance characteristics, along with those of the MCP, are compared. Among the structures presented are the wedge-and-strip, Codacon, and multilayer coincidence-anode MAMA (Multimode Microchannel Array) arrays. Spatial resolution of 25 x 25 sq microns (coincidence anode arrays) is achieved with an array format of 256 x 1024 pixels. On the basis of the performance data it is concluded that the readout systems using only conducting electrodes offer the best performance characteristics.

Far-field patterns of spaceborne antennas from plane-polar near-field measurements

Certain unique features of a recently constructed plane-polar near-field measurement facility for determining the far-field patterns of large and fragile spaceborne antennas are described. In this facility, the horizontally positioned antenna rotates about its axis while the measuring probe is advanced incrementally in a fixed radial direction. The near-field measured data is then processed using a Jacobi-Bessel expansion to obtain the antenna far fields. A summary of the measurement and computational steps is given. Comparisons between the outdoor far-field measurements and the constructed far-field patterns from the near-field measured data are provided for different antenna sizes and frequencies. Application of the substitution method for the absolute gain measurement is discussed. In particular, results are shown for the 4.8-m mesh-deployable high-gain antenna of the Galileo spacecraft which has the mission of orbiting Jupiter in 1988.

Investigation of limb-sidestick dynamic interaction with roll control

A fixed-base simulation has been carried out to investigate and quantify limb/manipulator dynamics and interactions between the neuromuscular subsystem, force sensing sidestick configuration, high-gain command augmentation, and command filtering, and also to investigate possible relationships between these interactions and the roll ratchet phenomenon. The data obtained support the suggestion that the roll ratchet phenomenon is a closed-loop pilot-vehicle system interaction in which the pilot's neuromuscular system dynamics play a central role. Ratchet tendencies are shown to be most severe on force sensing sidestick manipulators with small stick deflections.

Microchannel plates and image detection at soft X-ray wavelengths

Detector systems based on the high-gain microchannel plate (MCP) electron multiplier have been used extensively for imaging at soft X-ray wavelengths both on the ground and in space. The latest pulse-counting electronic readout systems provide zero readout-noise, spatial resolutions (FWM) of 25 microns or better and can determine the arrival times of detected photons to an accuracy of the order of 100 ns. These systems can br developed to produce detectors with active areas of 100 mm in diameter or greater. The use of CsI photocathodes produces very high detective quantum efficiencies to wavelengths between about 100 and 1A (0.1 to 10 keV) with moderate energy resolution. The operating characteristics of the different types of soft X-ray MCP detector systems are described, and the prospects for future developments are discussed.

The Galileo attitude and articulation control system - A radiation-hard, high precision, state-of-the-art control system

The Galileo mission and spacecraft, consisting of a Jupiter-orbiter and an atmospheric entry probe, are discussed. Components will include: magnetometers and plasma-wave antennas on a boom, high-gain antenna, probe vehicle, two different bus electronics packages, and a radioisotope thermoelectric generator. Instruments, investigators and objectives are tabulated for both probe science and orbiter science investigations. Requirements in the design of the attitude and articulation control system are very stringent because of the complex dynamics, flexible body effects, the need for autonomy, and the severe radiation environment in the Jupiter nighborhood. Galileo was intended to be ready for launch via Space Shuttle in May of 1986.

Imaging by time-tagging photons with the multi-anode microchannel array detector system

The capability and initial use of the Multi-Anode Microchannel Array (MAMA) detector in the time-tag mode is reported. The detector hardware currently in use consists of a visible-light detector tube with a semitransparent photocathode proximity-focused to a high-gain curved-channel microchannel plate MCP. The photoevents are detected by a (256 x 1024)-pixel coincidence-anode array with pixel dimensions of 25 x 25 microns connected to charge-sensitive amplifiers and event-detection circuitry. In the time-lag mode, the detector delivers the pixel address and the time of arrival for each detected photon to an accuracy of 10 microns. The maximum count rate is limited by the speed of data-acquisition hardware. The MAMA detector in the time-lag mode is currently being evaluated in programs of astrometry and speckle imaging.

Frequency addressable beams for land mobile communications

Satellites used for mobile communications need to serve large numbers of small, low cost terminals. The most important parameters affecting the capacity of such systems are the satellite equivalent isotropically radiated power (EIRP) and gain to noise temperature ratio (G/T) and available bandwidth. Satellites using frequency addressed beams provide high EIRP and G/T with high-gain antenna beams that also permit frequency reuse over the composite coverage area. Frequency addressing is easy to implement and compatible with low-cost terminals and offers higher capacity than alternative approaches.

System level comparison of FDMA vs. CDMA (under conference guideline constraint)

The margin that is required to mitigate the near-far problem in a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) mobile satellite system is determined by the radio-propagation model selected, the distribution of the users in clear and shadowed environments, and implementation techniques. The use of revenue potential as a means of evaluating the relative merits of CDMA and Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) systems is a convenient way to rationalize the performance of systems using high-gain and low-gain antennas. The revenue potential of CDMA is much greater than the revenue potential for FDMA for a particular satellite design considered.

A control scheme for trajectory tracking of robot manipulators

The authors put forward a simple scheme for multivariable control of robot manipulators. The scheme is composed of an inner-loop stabilizing controller and an outerloop tracking controller. The inner loop utilizes a multivariable PD (proportional differential) controller to stabilize the robot by placing the poles at some desired locations. The outer loop uses a multivariable PID (proportional integral differential) controller to achieve input-output decoupling and trajectory tracking. The gains of the PD and PID controllers are related directly to the linearized robot model by simple closed-form expressions. The controller gains are updated online to cope with variations in the robot model for gross motion and payload change. Alternatively, the use of high-gain controllers for gross motion and payload change are discussed.
