IBM powerPC 405 SEU mitigation using processor voting techniques in Xilinx Virtex-I1 pro FPGA

Not until recently, Xilinx has developed a new field programmable gate array (FPGA) device family, Virtex-I1 Pro. In this single device, not only dies it have density logic cells (3K to125K), gigabit connectivity, on chip memory, digital clock management, but also it can have up to four IBM PowerPC 405 Processor hard cores, running up to 400MHz and 633 Mbps. To utilize this cutting edge device in space applications, a few Single Event Upset (SEU) mitigation techniques need to be implemented to a design for the device. At Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), we have successfully demonstrated the feasibility of running multiple processors running in a lock step fashion to accomplish SEU mitigation and fault tolerance.

Impacts of the IBM Cell Processor to Support Climate Models

NASA is interested in the performance and cost benefits for adapting its applications to the IBM Cell processor. However, its 256KB local memory per SPE and the new communication mechanism, make it very challenging to port an application. We selected the solar radiation component of the NASA GEOS-5 climate model, which: (1) is representative of column physics (approximately 50% computational time), (2) has a high computational load relative to transferring data from and to main memory, (3) performs independent calculations across multiple columns. We converted the baseline code (single-precision, Fortran) to C and ported it with manually SIMDizing 4 independent columns and found that a Cell with 8 SPEs can process 2274 columns per second. Compared with the baseline results, the Cell is approximately 5.2X, approximately 8.2X, approximately 15.1X faster than a core on Intel Woodcrest, Dempsey, and Itanium2, respectively. We believe this dramatic performance improvement makes a hybrid cluster with Cell and traditional nodes competitive.

IBM Watson Supporting Space Radiation

The NASA Human Research Program (HRP) Space Radiation (SR) Program Element has been working with IBM Watson Explorer (WEX) to create a tool that allows researchers to search the NASA SR-funded research corpus to help streamline research and maximize efficiency. The entire corpus of publications from research funded by the NASA SR Program Element has been ingested into WEX to allow for examination of: synergies across funded research areas, gaps in research, and collaboration opportunities. This information will be valuable to both scientists and managers as it will allow analysis related to specific scientific questions, inform key decisions and support cross validation of study results. NASA will also evaluate the potential to make WEX publicly available in order to facilitate proposal generation and to enhance collaborations within and across disciplines.

Mission and data operations IBM 360: User's guide

The purpose of this manual is to serve as an introduction to the M&DO computer systems and to supplement all other relevant documentation to be referenced. Because of its index structure, the user will be able to reference those sections pertinent to his needs. This is not a programming manual; where a user needs to learn a language or a system, it will be necessary to review the referenced documents.

NASIS data base management system: IBM 360 TSS implementation. Volume 4: Program design specifications

The design specifications for the programs and modules within the NASA Aerospace Safety Information System (NASIS) are presented. The purpose of the design specifications is to standardize the preparation of the specifications and to guide the program design. Each major functional module within the system is a separate entity for documentation purposes. The design specifications contain a description of, and specifications for, all detail processing which occurs in the module. Sub-models, reference tables, and data sets which are common to several modules are documented separately.
