Advances in pyroelectric infrared detectors.

Recent improvements in the pyroelectric detector have been due to the development of locked-in polarization, further reduction of the FET leakage current, and reduction of short circuit noise. The pyroelectric detector has been successfully employed in these typical applications: (1) thermograph using a single detector and X-Y scanner, (2) focal plane reticle scanner, (3) linear array thermal imaging system, (4) pyroelectric image tube, (5) radiometers (vertical temperature profile radiometer, carbon dioxide sensor), (6) high speed spectrometer, and (7) laser detector.

Shakhbazian I - A distant cluster of compact galaxies.

Shakhbazian (1957) reported a cluster of red objects which he interpreted to be a cluster of stars in Ursa Major at a distance of 130 kpc. Spectra obtained with an image-tube scanner for 5 members of this cluster show that they are all galaxies with a redshift corresponding to a radial velocity 29.700 km/sec. The remaining 12 members of the group appear to be diffuse, and are probably also galaxies.

Cathodochromic storage device

A memory and display device has been developed by combing a fast phosphor layer with a cathodochromic layer in a cathode ray tube. Images are stored as patterns of electron beam induced optical density in the cathodo-chromic material. The stored information is recovered by exciting the backing, fast phosphor layer with a constant current electron beam and detecting the emitted radiation which is modulated by absorption in the cathodochromic layer. The storage can be accomplished in one or more TV frames (1/30 sec each). More than 500 TV line resolution and close to 2:1 contrast ratio are possible. The information storage time in a dark environment is approximately 24 hours. A reconstituted (readout) electronic video signal can be generated continuously for times in excess of 10 minutes or periodically for several hours.

Spectrophotometry of comets

Photoelectric spectrophotometric- and image tube equipped spectrographic-studies on comets are used to formulate a new model for the cometary nucleus that is physically similar to the icy-conglomerate. Absolute flux distributions of the principal spectral features for five comets of different compositions and heliocentric distances were evaluated. Comparison of visible and infrared brightnesses was used to calculate the optical albedos of observed particles.

The scattering mean free path in the Uranian atmosphere

New measurements of the equivalent widths of the 4.0 S(0) and S(1) H2 quadrupole lines in the Uranian spectrum have been obtained using high dispersion (4.12 A/mm) image-tube spectrography. The measured equivalent widths are 62 plus or minus 19 mA and 58 plus or minus 13 mA for the S(0) and S(1) lines, respectively. Curve-of-growth analysis in terms of a reflecting layer model yields an H2 column density of 780 (+940 or -330) km amagat and a temperature of 78 (+80 or -24) K. Interpretation using a semiinfinite, homogeneous, isotropically scattering model for line formation yields a scattering mean free path at 6400 A of 550 plus or minus 250 km amagat. Quoted errors for both the H2 column density and the scattering mean free path include the effect of uncertainty in the choice of atmospheric temperature. The results are discussed in terms of current models for the Uranian atmosphere.

Development and test of video systems for airborne surveillance of oil spills

Five video systems - potentially useful for airborne surveillance of oil spills - were developed, flight tested, and evaluated. The systems are: (1) conventional black and white TV, (2) conventional TV with false color, (3) differential TV, (4) prototype Lunar Surface TV, and (5) field sequential TV. Wavelength and polarization filtering were utilized in all systems. Greatly enhanced detection of oil spills, relative to that possible with the unaided eye, was achieved. The most practical video system is a conventional TV camera with silicon-diode-array image tube, filtered with a Corning 7-54 filter and a polarizer oriented with its principal axis in the horizontal direction. Best contrast between oil and water was achieved when winds and sea states were low. The minimum detectable oil film thickness was about 0.1 micrometer.

Experiments on the use of CCD's to detect photoelectron images

Image tube design and processing requirements for building an ICCD are discussed. Work is under way at EVC for building an ICCD using the Fairchild CCD 201 (100 x 100) array, and progress will be reported. Demountable tests have been made, exposing parts of a CCD 201 to 15 kilovolt electrons over five radiation levels from approximately 10 to 1 million rads. Other tubes built by EVC over the last few years which successfully use semiconductors to detect photoelectrons will be described briefly.

The spectrum of OH 471 /0642+44/

Results of image-tube and Digicon spectroscopy of OH 471 (0642+44) are reported. Wavelengths of 89 stronger absorption features in the range 4000-6000 A are given, and a number of absorption redshift systems are suggested. The lack of radiation shortward of 4000 A is attributed to Lyman continuum absorption in the gas giving rise to the various absorption-line systems.

The nature of BL Lacertae

Spectrophotometric measurements of the nebula around BL Lacertae have been made with the Lick image-tube scanner on the 3-m telescope. No absorption features were seen, and, although the nebular spectrum is curved and steeper than that of BL Lac itself, it is not a good match to the energy distribution of a normal elliptical galaxy. Thus we do not confirm the observations by Oke and Gunn in which absorption features were seen corresponding to those in the redshifted spectrum of an elliptical galaxy. We have found no evidence that the nebula around BL Lac is a normal galaxy of stars.

The peculiar object HD 44179 /'The red rectangle'/

A strong infrared source detected in the AFCRL sky survey is confirmed, and is identified with the binary star HD 44179, embedded in a peculiar nebula. UBVRI and broad-band photometry between 2.2 and 27 microns are combined with blue, red, and near-infrared spectra, polarimetry and spectrophotometry of the star, and a range of direct and image-tube photographs of the nebula, to suggest a composite model of the system. In this model, the infrared radiation derives from thermal emission by dust grains contained in a disklike geometry about the central object, which appears to be of spectral type B9-A0 III and which may be in pre-main-sequence evolution. Two infrared emission features are found, peaking at 8.7 and 11.3 microns, the latter corresponding to the feature seen in the spectrum of the planetary nebula NGC 7027. The complex nebular structure is discussed on the basis of photographs through narrow-band continuum and emission-line filters. The polarization data support the suggestion of a disk containing some large particles. No radio continuum emission is detected.

Spectroscopic studies of very old hot stars. I - NGC 246 and its exciting star

The planetary nebula NGC 246 and its exciting stars were studied, using an image-tube spectrograph at the Cassegrain focus of a 36-inch telescope. Observations of the central star indicate that it has one of the most highly excited spectra known to optical astronomers. The only lines definitely present in the spectrum are lines of C IV and O VI, although lines of He II are probably present. Since nitrogen lines (in any ionization state) are absent, the stellar spectrum suggests that the star has experienced the triple-alpha process. Nebular observations were used to estimate the atmospheric properties of the exciting star by the Zanstra method. The results are found to correlate well with the spectral appearance of the star. Comparison of the properties of the star and surrounding nebula with Paczynski's evolutionary tracks for planetary nuclei suggests that the star is very near the point of exhaustion of its nuclear fuels.

The nebulosity around 3C 48

Results are reported for spectrophotometric measurements of the nebulosity around the quasar 3C 48 which were made with an image-tube scanner on a 3-m telescope. The forbidden emission lines of O III (5007 and 4959 A), Ne III (3869 A), and O II (3727 A) are detected in the nebulosity north of the quasar nucleus and are found to be narrower than those present in the nucleus, but with larger equivalent widths and a slightly larger redshift. No emission lines are detected south of the nucleus, and the continuum on the north is shown to be dominated by scattered continuum radiation from the central quasar. It is suggested that the hot gas responsible for the emission lines may be either part of a shell or disk rotating about the quasar or gas ejected from it.

Metal abundances of RR Lyrae stars in galactic globular clusters

Results are reported for image-tube scanner measurements of Preston's (1959) metal-abundance indicator and metallic-line absorption in the G-band region (4285 to 4317 A) of 47 RR Lyrae stars in 12 galactic globular clusters and 67 RR Lyrae field stars. The relationship (Fe/H) is defined and determined from curve-of-growth analyses of 13 RR Lyrae field stars, while a comparison of metal-abundance vs metallic-line absorption relationships derived for the field and cluster stars indicates that both groups can be calibrated in the same way. Based on this calibration, (Fe/H) values are deduced for the globular-cluster stars and the clusters themselves. It is found that the alpha-rich phenomenon is present in these stars and is confined to calcium and titanium.

Optical and X-ray observations of the PSR 1913 + 16 field

We have obtained medium-resolution spectra in the yellow of seven stars in the error box of the binary radio pulsar PSR 1913 + 16, using the image-tube scanner at the Lick 3-m telescope. None of the objects is spectroscopically abnormal and thus a strong candidate for membership in the system. The data are used to establish the extinction in the field, which is modest for this low galactic latitude. For three of the stars, limits of the order V exceeding 23 mag on optical pulsations with the frequency of the radio pulsar are derived. X-ray observations of the field have been obtained in the 2.5-7.5 keV band, using the UCL experiment aboard OAO Copernicus. No source is detected, with a 2 sigma upper limit on the time-averaged flux of 1.0 times 10 to the -10th power ergs per sq cm per sec.

Total reduction of distorted echelle spectrograms - An automatic procedure

A total reduction procedure, notable for its use of a computer-controlled microdensitometer for semi-automatically tracing curved spectra, is applied to distorted high-dispersion echelle spectra recorded by an image tube. Microdensitometer specifications are presented and the FORTRAN, TRACEN and SPOTS programs are outlined. The intensity spectrum of the photographic or electrographic plate is plotted on a graphic display. The time requirements are discussed in detail.
