Plasma properties in electron-bombardment ion thrusters

The paper describes a technique for computing volume-averaged plasma properties within electron-bombardment ion thrusters, using spatially varying Langmuir-probe measurements. Average values of the electron densities are defined by integrating the spatially varying Maxwellian and primary electron densities over the ionization volume, and then dividing by the volume. Plasma properties obtained in the 30-cm-diameter J-series and ring-cusp thrusters are analyzed by the volume-averaging technique. The superior performance exhibited by the ring-cusp thruster is correlated with a higher average Maxwellian electron temperature. The ring-cusp thruster maintains the same fraction of primary electrons as does the J-series thruster, but at a much lower ion production cost. The volume-averaged predictions for both thrusters are compared with those of a detailed thruster performance model.

Binary collision model for neon Auger spectra from neon ion bombardment of the aluminum surface

A model is developed to account for the angle-resolved Auger spectra from neon ion bombardment of the aluminum surface recently obtained by Pepper and Aron. The neon is assumed to be excited in a single asymmetric neon-aluminum-collision and scattered back into the vacuum where it emits an Auger electron. The velocity of the Auger electron acquires a Doppler shift by virtue of the emission from a moving source. The dependence of the Auger peak shape and energy on the incident ion energy, angle of incidence and on the angle of Auger electron emission with respect to the surface is presented. Satisfactory agreement with the angle resolved experimental observations is obtained. The dependence of the angle-integrated Auger yield on the incident ion energy and angle of incidence is also obtained and shown to be in satisfactory agreement with available experimental evidence.

Ion bombardment of interplanetary dust

It is thought that a fraction of the interplanetary dust particles (IDP's) collected in the stratosphere by high-flying aircraft represent materials ejected from comets. An investigation is conducted regarding the effects of ion bombardment on these particles, taking into account information on ion tracks and carbon in IDP's and laboratory data on charged particle bombardment of surfaces. It is found that the observational discovery of particle tracks in certain IDP's clearly indicates the exposure of these particles to approximately 10,000 years of 1-AU equivalent solar-particle fluences. If some erasure of the tracks occurs, which is likely when an IDP enters the upper atmosphere, then somewhat longer times are implied. The effects of the erosion and enhanced adhesion produced by ions are considered.

Aluminum work function: Effect of oxidation, mechanical scraping and ion bombardment

Surface studies have been performed on aluminum polycrystalline surfaces which have been mechanically scraped. Such studies were initiated in order to understand surface effects occurring in tribological processes which involve rubbing surfaces and the effects of adsorption of oxygen. To characterize the surfaces, the following three different experimental approaches have been used: (1) X.P.S. (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), in order to check the cleanliness of the surfaces and follow the adsorption and oxidation kinetics; (2) Analysis of the work function changes by following the energy spectra of secondary electrons emitted under low energy electron bombardment; and (3) Analysis of photoemission intensities under U.V. excitation. The reference state being chosen to be the surface cleaned by ion bombardment and exposures to oxygen atmospheres have been shown to lower the work function of clean polycrystalline aluminum by 1.2 eV. The oxygen pressure is found to affect only the kinetics of these experiments. Mechanical scraping has been shown to induce a decrease ( 0.3 eV) in the work function, which could sharply modify the kinetics of adsorption on the surface.

Mercury bombardment ion thrusters - Development status, performance levels, and test history

The present work describes the development status, performance levels, and life test history of 5-cm, 8-cm, and 30-cm mercury bombardment ion thrusters and their respective power processors. A 2.6 kW, 30-cm thruster module and its power processor unit are now available that established the performance required by interplanetary and geosynchronous orbit raising missions. An 8-cm thruster with nominal 4.5 mN thrust level capability has demonstrated a high performance over a wide range of thrust and operational life.

Sputtering of ions from Cu and Al by low energy oxygen ion bombardment

The sputtering of Cu(+) and Al(+) ions from copper and aluminum while the target surface is bombarded with low energy oxygen ions (20 to 500 eV), is investigated. Both the ion yield, as a function of oxygen ion energy, and the kinetic energy distribution of the sputtered ions at a given oxygen ion energy are determined.

Ion bombardment and its effects on the optical properties of metals

An experimental program, to evaluate the change in total hemispherical emittance and solar absorptance of engineering metals used on spacecraft and in spacecraft instrumentation systems, is presented. Three materials, titanium alloy, pure aluminum, and electrolytic copper, were used in the experiment. Results show that emittance, absorptance, and alpha/epsilon ratio of the materials were changed by ion bombardment. The time before the change occurs depends upon the material used, the intensity of bombardment, and the environment assumed.

Magnetic flux density environment of several electron-bombardment ion thrusters

Measurements of the external magnetic field of several electron-bombardment mercury ion thrusters were made using a single axis fluxgate magnetometer. The axial dipole moment accounted for most of the external field. In addition, residual fields from an electromagnet thruster were approximately 20 percent of the initial field. Simple degaussing of the axial magnets reduced the residual fields to 1 to 2 percent of the initial field.

Prevention of cathode damage from positive ion bombardment

Mixed alkaline earth oxide compounds deposited into hole at cathode surface center prevent ion back bombardment damage to cathode by reducing oxide layer and by creating metallic diffusion along sides of hole for enhanced electron emission.

Magnetospheric ion bombardment profiles of satellites - Europa and Dione

Bombardment profiles generated by tracking ions in magnetospheric plasmas onto the surface of a satellite with a suitable description of the ion motion are used to calculate the spatial dependence across a satellite surface of the ion bombardment/implantation rate for satellites embedded in planetary magnetospheric plasmas. Attention is given to the results of a parameter study; a general dependency on ion gyroradius and pitch angle is noted, together with a strong dependence of access to the leading hemisphere on pitch-angle distribution. Gyromotion is found to cause differences in the bombardment of the inner and outer hemisphere. Reasonable speed and pitch-angle distributions are used to calculate profiles for sulfur ions incident on Europa and oxygen ones incident on Dione.
