Non-oscillatory no-scale inflation

We propose a non-oscillatory no-scale supergravity model of inflation (NO-NO inflation) in which the inflaton does not oscillate at the end of the inflationary era. Instead, the Universe is then dominated by the inflaton kinetic energy density (kination). During the transition from inflation to kination, the Universe preheats instantly through a coupling to Higgs-like fields. These rapidly annihilate and scatter into ultra-relativistic matter particles, which subsequently dominate the energy density, and reheating occurs at a temperature far above that of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. After the electroweak transition, the inflaton enters a tracking phase as in some models of quintessential inflation. The model predictions for cosmic microwave background observables are consistent with Planck 2018 data, and the density of gravitational waves is below the upper bound from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. Furthermore, we also find that the density of supersymmetric cold dark matter produced by gravitino decay is consistent with Planck 2018 data over the expected range of supersymmetric particle masses.

Tilted spatially nonflat inflation

Throughout this work, we construct nonlinear inflaton potential-energy densities that describe not necessarily very slowly rolling closed and open inflation models, and compute tilted primordial spatial inhomogeneity power spectra that follow from quantum-mechanical fluctuations during inflation in these models. Earlier nonflat inflation model power spectra computations assumed an inflaton potential-energy density with a linear slope that resulted in very slow roll during inflation and untilted power spectra. These new tilted power spectra differ from those that have previously been used to study cosmological data in nonflat cosmological models.

Conceptual Designs of the Structure of Inflatable Blades for Enabling Larger Turbines

Over the last couple of decades, increasingly larger rotor diameters have enabled significant reductions in the levelized cost of energy for wind through higher energy capture and improved capacity factors. But for onshore turbines, this has been met with manufacturing and transportation challenges. To enable larger onshore rotors, an innovative inflatable blade concept is investigated that employs both traditional and onsite manufacturing. The design architecture consists primarily of an inflatable aerodynamic shell attached to a factory-manufactured primary structure. Multiple architectures, cross-sectional topologies, and material combinations for the primary structure are investigated, as well as multiple skin materials. Structural cross-sectional characteristics are compared to a traditional blade, and inflatability and cost evaluations are presented. Results show that a box-beam architecture using only composite materials yields significant mass reduction with mature technologies/processes and modest cost decrease compared to traditional blade construction. This low-TRL study demonstrates the inflatable blade concept's techno-economic potential.

Higgs Inflation and the Electroweak Gauge Sector

Abstract We introduce a method that allows the Higgs to be the inflaton. The Higgs is considered as a pseudo‐Nambu‐Goldstone (pNG) boson of a global coset symmetry , which is spontaneously breaks at an energy scale . A suitable Chern−Simons (CS) interaction is given to it, with representing the dimensionless CS coupling strength and an decay constant. As a result, slow‐roll inflation occurs via ‐induced friction down a steep sinusoidal potential. To obey electroweak symmetry, the lowest‐order CS interaction is required to be quadratic in the Higgs, with the coupling strength . Higher‐order interaction terms keep the full Lagrangian nearly invariant under the approximate pNG shift symmetry. Employing the simplest symmetry coset , ‐folds of inflation occur when . Successfully explaining inflation necessitates small values of the decay constant, ; this in turn requires large , which is ruled out by electric dipole measurements. Although the electroweak hierarchy problem while achieving successful inflation, the real benefit is found in providing a different path to identifying the Higgs as the inflaton, outside the standard modified‐gravity framework.

The dark universe after reheating in string inflation

We study the production of dark matter and dark radiation after reheating in string inflation models where the Calabi-Yau has a fibred structure and the visible sector lives on D3 branes. We show how the interplay between different physical constraints from inflation, reheating, supersymmetry breaking and dark radiation, leads to distinct predictions for the nature of dark matter. In particular, in Fibre Inflation dark matter can only be primordial black holes or an open string QCD axion with an intermediate scale decay constant since WIMPs are always too heavy and ultralight closed string axions cannot behave as fuzzy dark matter due to strong isocurvature bounds. On the other hand, Kähler moduli inflation can allow for non-thermal WIMP dark matter at the TeV-scale.

Can massive primordial black holes be produced in mild waterfall hybrid inflation?

We studied the possibility whether the massive primordial black holes (PBHs) surviving today can be produced in hybrid inflation. Though it is of great interest since such PBHs can be the candidate for dark matter or seeds of the supermassive black holes in galaxies, there have not been quantitatively complete works yet because of the non-perturbative behavior around the critical point of hybrid inflation. Therefore, combining the stochastic and δ N formalism, we numerically calculated the curvature perturbations in a non-perturbative way and found, without any specific assumption of the types of hybrid inflation, PBHs are rather overproduced when the waterfall phase of hybrid inflation continues so long that the PBH scale is well enlarged and the corresponding PBH mass becomes sizable enough.

Goldilocks models of higher-dimensional inflation (including modulus stabilization)

We explore the mechanics of inflation within simplified extra-dimensional models involving an inflaton interacting with the Einstein-Maxwell system in two extra dimensions. The models are Goldilocks-like inasmuch as they are just complicated enough to include a mechanism to stabilize the extra-dimensional size (or modulus), yet simple enough to solve explicitly the full extra-dimensional field equations using only simple tools. The solutions are not restricted to the effective 4D regime with H || m {sub KK} (the latter referring to the characteristic mass splitting of the Kaluza-Klein excitations) because the full extra-dimensional Einstein equations are solved. This allows an exploration of inflationary physics in a controlled calculational regime away from the usual four-dimensional lamp-post. The inclusion of modulus stabilization is important because experience with string models teaches that this is usually what makes models fail: stabilization energies easily dominate the shallow potentials required by slow roll and so open up directions to evolve that are steeper than those of the putative inflationary direction. We explore (numerically and analytically) three representative kinds of inflationary scenarios within this simple setup. In one the radion is trapped in an inflaton-dependent local minimum whose non-zero energy drives inflation. Inflation ends as this energy relaxes to zero when the inflaton finds its own minimum. The other two involve power-law scaling solutions during inflation. One of these is a dynamical attractor whose features are relatively insensitive to initial conditions but whose slow-roll parameters cannot be arbitrarily small; the other is not an attractor but can roll much more slowly, until eventually transitioning to the attractor. The scaling solutions can satisfy H > m {sub KK}, but when they do standard 4D fluctuation calculations need not apply. When in a 4D regime the solutions predict η ≅ 0 and so r ≅ 0.11 when n {sub s} ≅ 0.96 and so are ruled out if tensor modes remain unseen. Assessment of general parameters is difficult until a full 6D fluctuation calculation is done.

Gravitational waves and large field inflation

According to the famous Lyth bound, one can confirm large field inflation by finding tensor modes with sufficiently large tensor-to-scalar ratio r . Here we will try to answer two related questions: is it possible to rule out all large field inflationary models by not finding tensor modes with r above some critical value, and what can we say about the scale of inflation by measuring r ? However, in order to answer these questions one should distinguish between two different definitions of the large field inflation and three different definitions of the scale of inflation. We will examine these issues using the theory of cosmological α-attractors as a convenient testing ground.

CMB scale dependent non-Gaussianity from massive gravity during inflation

We consider a cosmological model in which the tensor mode becomes massive during inflation, and study the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature and polarization bispectra arising from the mixing between the scalar mode and the massive tensor mode during inflation. The model assumes the existence of a preferred spatial frame during inflation. The local Lorentz invariance is already broken in cosmology due to the existence of a preferred rest frame. The existence of a preferred spatial frame further breaks the remaining local SO(3) invariance and in particular gives rise to a mass in the tensor mode. At linear perturbation level, we minimize our model so that the vector mode remains non-dynamical, while the scalar mode is the same as the one in single-field slow-roll inflation. At non-linear perturbation level, this inflationary massive graviton phase leads to a sizeable scalar-scalar-tensor coupling, much greater than the scalar-scalar-scalar one, as opposed to the conventional case. This scalar-scalar-tensor interaction imprints a scale dependent feature in the CMB temperature and polarization bispectra. Very intriguingly, we find a surprizing similarity between the predicted scale dependence and the scale-dependent non-Gaussianities at low multipoles hinted in the WMAP and Planck results.

Numerical evaluation of the tensor bispectrum in two field inflation

We evaluate the dimensionless non-Gaussianity parameter h {sub NL}, that characterizes the amplitude of the tensor bispectrum, numerically for a class of two field inflationary models such as double inflation, hybrid inflation and aligned natural inflation. We compare the numerical results with the slow roll results which can be obtained analytically. In the context of double inflation, we also investigate the effects on h {sub NL} due to curved trajectories in the field space. We explicitly examine the validity of the consistency relation governing the tensor bispectrum in the squeezed limit. Lastly, we discuss the contribution to h {sub NL} due to the epoch of preheating in two field models.

Sgoldstino-less inflation and low energy SUSY breaking

We assess the range of validity of sgoldstino-less inflation in a scenario of low energy supersymmetry breaking. We first analyze the consistency conditions that an effective theory of the inflaton and goldstino superfields should satisfy in order to be faithfully described by a sgoldstino-less model. Enlarging the scope of previous studies, we investigate the case where the effective field theory cut-off, and hence also the sgoldstino mass, are inflaton-dependent. We then introduce a UV complete model where one can realize successfully sgoldstino-less inflation and gauge mediation of supersymmetry breaking, combining the α-attractor mechanism and a weakly coupled model of spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry. In this class of models we find that, given current limits on superpartner masses, the gravitino mass has a lower bound of the order of the MeV, i.e. we cannot reach very low supersymmetry breaking scales. On the plus side, we recognize that in this framework, one can derive the complete superpartner spectrum as well as compute inflation observables, the reheating temperature, and address the gravitino overabundance problem. We then show that further constraints come from collider results and inflation observables. Their non trivial interplay seems a staple feature of phenomenological studies of supersymmetric inflationary models.

Single field double inflation and primordial black holes

Within the framework of scalar-tensor theories, we study the conditions that allow single field inflation dynamics on small cosmological scales to significantly differ from that of the large scales probed by the observations of cosmic microwave background. The resulting single field double inflation scenario is characterised by two consequent inflation eras, usually separated by a period where the slow-roll approximation fails. At large field values the dynamics of the inflaton is dominated by the interplay between its non-minimal coupling to gravity and the radiative corrections to the inflaton self-coupling. For small field values the potential is, instead, dominated by a polynomial that results in a hilltop inflation. Without relying on the slow-roll approximation, which is invalidated by the appearance of the intermediate stage, we propose a concrete model that matches the current measurements of inflationary observables and employs the freedom granted by the framework on small cosmological scales to give rise to a sizeable population of primordial black holes generated by large curvature fluctuations. We find that these features generally require a potential with a local minimum. We show that the associated primordial black hole mass function is only approximately lognormal.

Multi-field effects in a simple extension of R {sup 2} inflation

We consider inflation in the system containing a Ricci scalar squared term and a canonical scalar field with quadratic mass term. In the Einstein frame this model takes the form of a two-field inflation model with a curved field space, and under the slow-roll approximation contains four free parameters corresponding to the masses of the two fields and their initial positions. We investigate how the inflationary dynamics and predictions for the primordial curvature perturbation depend on these four parameters. Our analysis is based on the δ N formalism, which allows us to determine predictions for the non-Gaussianity of the curvature perturbation as well as for quantities relating to its power spectrum. Depending on the choice of parameters, we find predictions that range from those of R {sup 2} inflation to those of quadratic chaotic inflation, with the non-Gaussianity of the curvature perturbation always remaining small. Using our results we are able to put constraints on the masses of the two fields.

Shifted μ -hybrid inflation, gravitino dark matter, and observable gravity waves

We investigate supersymmetric hybrid inflation in a realistic model based on the gauge symmetry SU(4) c × SU(2) L × SU(2) R . The minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) μ term arises, following Dvali, Lazarides, and Shafi, from the coupling of the MSSM electroweak doublets to a gauge singlet superfield which plays an essential role in inflation. The primordial monopoles are inflated away by arranging that the SU(4) c × SU(2) L × SU(2) R symmetry is broken along the inflationary trajectory. The interplay between the (above) μ coupling, the gravitino mass, and the reheating following inflation is discussed in detail. We explore regions of the parameter space that yield gravitino dark matter and observable gravity waves with the tensor-to-scalar ratio r ~ 10 –4 –10 –3 .

Spacetime dynamics of a Higgs vacuum instability during inflation

A remarkable prediction of the Standard Model is that, in the absence of corrections lifting the energy density, the Higgs potential becomes negative at large field values. If the Higgs field samples this part of the potential during inflation, the negative energy density may locally destabilize the spacetime. Here, we use numerical simulations of the Einstein equations to study the evolution of inflation-induced Higgs fluctuations as they grow towards the true (negative-energy) minimum. Our simulations show that forming a single patch of true vacuum in our past light cone during inflation is incompatible with the existence of our Universe; the boundary of the true vacuum region grows outward in a causally disconnected manner from the crunching interior, which forms a black hole. We also find that these black hole horizons may be arbitrarily elongated—even forming black strings—in violation of the hoop conjecture. Furthermore, by extending the numerical solution of the Fokker-Planck equation to the exponentially suppressed tails of the field distribution at large field values, we derive a rigorous correlation between a future measurement of the tensor-to-scalar ratio and the scale at which the Higgs potential must receive stabilizing corrections in order for the Universe to have survived inflation until today.

Dark Matter Production during Warm Inflation via Freeze-In

We present a novel perspective on the role of inflation in the production of dark matter (DM). Specifically, we explore the DM production during warm inflation via ultraviolet freeze-in (WIFI). We demonstrate that in a warm inflation (WI) setting the persistent thermal bath, sustained by the dissipative interactions with the inflaton field, can source a sizable DM abundance via the nonrenormalizable interactions that connect the DM with the bath. Compared to the (conventional) radiation-dominated (RD) UV freeze-in scenario for the same reheat temperature (after inflation), the resulting DM yield in WIFI is always enhanced showing a strongly positive dependence on the mass dimension of the nonrenormalizable operator. Of particular interest, for a sufficiently large mass dimension of the operator, the entirety of the DM abundance of the Universe can be created during the inflationary phase. For the specific models we study, we find that the enhancement in DM yield, relative to RD UV freeze-in, is at least an order of magnitude for an operator of mass dimension 5, and as large as 18 orders of magnitude for an operator of mass dimension 10. Our findings also suggest a broader applicability for producing other cosmological relics, which may have a substantial impact on the evolution of the early Universe. A tail of eternal inflation

Non-trivial inflaton self-interactions can yield calculable signatures of primordial non-Gaussianity that are measurable in cosmic surveys. We calculate the non-Gaussian corrections to Stochastic Inflation within the framework of Soft de Sitter Effective Theory, from which we derive the associated probability distribution for the scalar fluctuations. As a consequence of this new result, we show that the phase transition to slow-roll eternal inflation is often incalculable in these models. Instead, this transition is sensitive to the non-Gaussian tail of the distribution of scalar fluctuations, which probes physics inside the horizon, potentially beyond the cutoff scale of the Effective Field Theory of Inflation. We delineate the parameter space consistent with current observations and weak coupling at horizon crossing in which the large fluctuations relevant for eternal inflation can only be determined by appealing to a UV completion. We also argue that this breakdown of the perturbative description is required for the de Sitter entropy to reflect the number of de Sitter microstates.

An optimized approach and inflation media for obtaining complimentary mass spectrometry-based omics data from human lung tissue

Human disease states are biomolecularly multifaceted and can span across phenotypic states, therefore it is important to understand diseases on all levels, across cell types, and within and across microanatomical tissue compartments. To obtain an accurate and representative view of the molecular landscape within human lungs, this fragile tissue must be inflated and embedded to maintain spatial fidelity of the location of molecules and minimize molecular degradation for molecular imaging experiments. Here, we evaluated agarose inflation and carboxymethyl cellulose embedding media and determined effective tissue preparation protocols for performing bulk and spatial mass spectrometry-based omics measurements. Mass spectrometry imaging methods were optimized to boost the number of annotatable molecules in agarose inflated lung samples. This optimized protocol permitted the observation of unique lipid distributions within several airway regions in the lung tissue block. Laser capture microdissection of these airway regions followed by high-resolution proteomic analysis allowed us to begin linking the lipidome with the proteome in a spatially resolved manner, where we observed proteins with high abundance specifically localized to the airway regions. We also compared our mass spectrometry results to lung tissue samples preserved using two other inflation/embedding media, but we identified several pitfalls with the sample preparation steps using this preservation method. Overall, we demonstrated the versatility of the inflation method, and we can start to reveal how the metabolome, lipidome, and proteome are connected spatially in human lungs and across disease states through a variety of different experiments.
