Integral Experiment Execution of Thermal or Epithermal eXperiments using Plutonium with Polyethylene and Iron, IER 519, TEX-Hanford (-Iron), CED-3b

This report documents the execution of experiments and measurements for IER 519, Thermal/Epithermal eXperiments (TEX) for Hanford applications, using plutonium Zero Power Physics Reactor (ZPPR) plates moderated by interstitial polyethylene and iron (Fe) absorber plates. Initial hand stack, mass, and dimensional measurements were performed in July 2025. The experiments were completed over three weeks from December 2025 to January 2026 at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) at the Nevada National Security Sites (NNSS). All photos and critical data were provided by NCERC and experimenters in LANL’s NEN-2.

Cooling Delays from Iron Sedimentation and Iron Inner Cores in White Dwarfs

Do white dwarfs have inner cores made of iron? Neutron-rich nuclei like 56 Fe experience a net gravitational force and sediment toward the core. Using new phase diagrams and molecular dynamics simulations, we show that 56 Fe should separate into mesoscopic Fe-rich crystallites due to its large charge relative to the background. At solar abundances, these crystallites rapidly precipitate and form an inner core of order 100 km and 10 -3 M ⊙ that may be detectable with asteroseismology. Associated cooling delays could be up to a Gyr for low-mass white dwarfs but are only ~0.1 Gyr for massive white dwarfs, so while this mechanism may contribute to the Q-branch the heating is insufficient to fully explain it.

Iron‐Catalyzed Intermolecular C−H Amination Assisted by an Isolated Iron‐Imido Radical Intermediate

Here we report the use of a base metal complex [( tBu pyrpyrr 2 )Fe(OEt 2 )] (1-OEt 2 ) ( tBu pyrpyrr 2 2− =3,5-tBu 2 -bis(pyrrolyl)pyridine) as a catalyst for intermolecular amination of C sp3 −H bonds of 9,10-dihydroanthracene (2 a) using 2,4,6-trimethyl phenyl azide (3 a) as the nitrene source. The reaction is complete within one hour at 80 °C using as low as 2 mol % 1-OEt 2 with control in selectivity for single C−H amination versus double C−H amination. Catalytic C−H amination reactions can be extended to other substrates such as cyclohexadiene and xanthene derivatives and can tolerate a variety of aryl azides having methyl groups in both ortho positions. Under stoichiometric conditions the imido radical species [( tBu pyrpyrr 2 )Fe{=N(2,6-Me 2 -4-tBu-C 6 H 2 )] (1-imido) can be isolated in 56 % yield, and spectroscopic, magnetometric, and computational studies confirmed it to be an S = 1 Fe IV complex. Complex 1-imido reacts with 2 a to produce the ferrous aniline adduct [( tBu pyrpyrr 2 )Fe{NH(2,6-Me 2 -4-tBu-C 6 H 2 )(C 14 H 11 )}] (1-aniline) in 45 % yield. Lastly, it was found that complexes 1-imido and 1-aniline are both competent intermediates in catalytic intermolecular C−H amination.
