A computer program to find the kernel of a polynomial operator

This paper presents a FORTRAN program written to solve for the kernel of a matrix of polynomials with real coefficients. It is an implementation of Sain's free modular algorithm for solving the minimal design problem of linear multivariable systems. The structure of the program is discussed, together with some features as they relate to questions of implementing the above method. An example of the use of the program to solve a design problem is included.

On the logarithmic-singularity correction in the kernel function method of subsonic lifting-surface theory

A logarithmic-singularity correction factor is derived for use in kernel function methods associated with Multhopp's subsonic lifting-surface theory. Because of the form of the factor, a relation was formulated between the numbers of chordwise and spanwise control points needed for good accuracy. This formulation is developed and discussed. Numerical results are given to show the improvement of the computation with the new correction factor.

The Stokes problem for the ellipsoid using ellipsoidal kernels

A brief review of Stokes' problem for the ellipsoid as a reference surface is given. Another solution of the problem using an ellipsoidal kernel, which represents an iterative form of Stokes' integral, is suggested with a relative error of the order of the flattening. On studying of Rapp's method in detail the procedures of improving its convergence are discussed.

An accurate method for evaluating the kernel of the integral equation relating lift to downwash in unsteady potential flow

The method is capable of generating approximations of arbitrary accuracy. It is based on approximating the algebraic part of the nonelementary integrals in the kernel by exponential functions and then integrating termwise. The exponent spacing in the approximation is a geometric sequence. The coefficients and exponent multiplier of the exponential approximation are computed by least squares so the method is completely automated. Exponential approximates generated in this manner are two orders of magnitude more accurate than the exponential approximation that is currently most often used for this purpose. The method can be used to generate approximations to attain any desired trade-off between accuracy and computing cost.

A collection of benchmark test kernels that measure supercomputer performance has been developed for the use of the NAS (Numerical Aerodynamic Simulation) program at the NASA Ames Research Center. This benchmark program is described in detail and the specific ground rules are given for running the program as a performance test.

On the solution of integral equations with strong ly singular kernels

In this paper some useful formulas are developed to evaluate integrals having a singularity of the form (t-x) sup-m, m or = 1. Interpreting the integrals with strong singularities in Hadamard sense, the results are used to obtain approximate solutions of singular integral equations. A mixed boundary value problem from the theory of elasticity is considered as an example. Particularly for integral equations where the kernel contains, in addition to the dominant term (t,x) sup-m, terms which become unbounded at the end points, the present technique appears to be extremely effective to obtain rapidly converging numerical results.

A simple method for computing the relativistic Compton scattering kernel for radiative transfer

Correct computation of the Compton scattering kernel (CSK), defined to be the Klein-Nishina differential cross section averaged over a relativistic Maxwellian electron distribution, is reported. The CSK is analytically reduced to a single integral, which can then be rapidly evaluated using a power series expansion, asymptotic series, and rational approximation for sigma(s). The CSK calculation has application to production codes that aim at understanding certain astrophysical, laser fusion, and nuclear weapons effects phenomena.

A simple and fast method for computing the relativistic Compton Scattering Kernel for radiative transfer

The Klein-Nishina differential cross section averaged over a relativistic Maxwellian electron distribution is analytically reduced to a single integral, which can then be rapidly evaluated in a variety of ways. A particularly fast method for numerically computing this single integral is presented. This is, to the authors' knowledge, the first correct computation of the Compton scattering kernel.

On the solution of integral equations with a generalized Cauchy kernel

A numerical technique is developed analytically to solve a class of singular integral equations occurring in mixed boundary-value problems for nonhomogeneous elastic media with discontinuities. The approach of Kaya and Erdogan (1987) is extended to treat equations with generalized Cauchy kernels, reformulating the boundary-value problems in terms of potentials as the unknown functions. The numerical implementation of the solution is discussed, and results for an epoxy-Al plate with a crack terminating at the interface and loading normal to the crack are presented in tables.

A message passing kernel for the hypercluster parallel processing test bed

A Message-Passing Kernel (MPK) for the Hypercluster parallel-processing test bed is described. The Hypercluster is being developed at the NASA Lewis Research Center to support investigations of parallel algorithms and architectures for computational fluid and structural mechanics applications. The Hypercluster resembles the hypercube architecture except that each node consists of multiple processors communicating through shared memory. The MPK efficiently routes information through the Hypercluster, using a message-passing protocol when necessary and faster shared-memory communication whenever possible. The MPK also interfaces all of the processors with the Hypercluster operating system (HYCLOPS), which runs on a Front-End Processor (FEP). This approach distributes many of the I/O tasks to the Hypercluster processors and eliminates the need for a separate I/O support program on the FEP.

Asymptotic expansions of the kernel functions for line formation with continuous absorption

Asymptotic expressions are obtained for the kernel functions M2(tau, alpha, beta) and K2(tau, alpha, beta) appearing in the theory of line formation with complete redistribution over a Voigt profile with damping parameter a, in the presence of a source of continuous opacity parameterized by beta. For a greater than 0, each coefficient in the asymptotic series is expressed as the product of analytic functions of a and eta. For Doppler broadening, only the leading term can be evaluated analytically.

Mission and Safety Critical (MASC) plans for the MASC Kernel simulation

This report discusses a prototype for Mission and Safety Critical (MASC) kernel simulation which explains the intended approach and how the simulation will be used. Smalltalk is chosen for the simulation because of usefulness in quickly building working models of the systems and its object-oriented approach to software. A scenario is also introduced to give details about how the simulation works. The eventual system will be a fully object-oriented one implemented in Ada via Dragoon. To implement the simulation, a scenario using elements typical of those in the Space Station, was created.

Small-kernel, constrained least-squares restoration of sampled image data

Following the work of Park (1989), who extended a derivation of the Wiener filter based on the incomplete discrete/discrete model to a more comprehensive end-to-end continuous/discrete/continuous model, it is shown that a derivation of the constrained least-squares (CLS) filter based on the discrete/discrete model can also be extended to this more comprehensive continuous/discrete/continuous model. This results in an improved CLS restoration filter, which can be efficiently implemented as a small-kernel convolution in the spatial domain.

Subsonic Kernel-Function Flutter Analysis of a Highly Tapered Tail Surface and Comparison with Experimental Results

A flutter analysis employing the kernel function for three-dimensional, subsonic, compressible flow is applied to a flutter-tested tail surface which has an aspect ratio of 3.5, a taper ratio of 0.15, and a leading-edge sweep of 30 deg. Theoretical and experimental results are compared at Mach numbers from 0.75 to 0.98. Good agreement between theoretical and experimental flutter dynamic pressures and frequencies is achieved at Mach numbers to 0.92. At Mach numbers from 0.92 to 0.98, however, a second solution to the flutter determinant results in a spurious theoretical flutter boundary which is at a much lower dynamic pressure and at a much higher frequency than the experimental boundary.
