Data for Nitrogen Dynamics and Physiological N Use Efficiency in High-biomass Sorghum

Improving nitrogen (N) efficiency is essential for sustainable high-biomass sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor L. Moench ) production. This study evaluated leaf and stem N dynamics, canopy N remobilization, and physiological nitrogen use efficiency (pNUE) in two photoperiod-sensitive sorghum hybrids under two N rates (0 and 168 kg-N ha−1) across multiple environments in Texas and Illinois. Leaf N concentrations increased with plant height in the canopy with steeper gradients under low-N conditions, indicating enhanced N remobilization when N is limited. Stem tissue showed less variation in N concentration across canopy nodal positions, with within-plant differences ranging from 1.2 to 7.6 g kg−1, compared to 3.1 to 16.3 g kg−1 in leaves. While pNUE was generally higher under unfertilized conditions, it varied largely by site; however, genotypic differences were minimal within the given year. These results highlight the importance of integrating environmental and management factors into breeding and fertilization strategies to enhance N efficiency in high-biomass sorghum.

Near-Zero Power MOF-Based Sensors for NO 2 Detection

Detection and capture of toxic nitrogen oxides (NO x ) is important for emissions control of exhaust gases and general public health. The ability to directly electrically detect trace (0.5–5 ppm) NO 2 by a metal–organic framework (MOF)-74-based sensor at relatively low temperatures (50 °C) is demonstrated via changes in electrical properties of M-MOF-74, M = Co, Mg, Ni. The magnitude of the change is ordered Ni > Co > Mg and explained by each variant's NO 2 adsorption capacity and specific chemical interaction. Ni-MOF-74 provides the highest sensitivity to NO 2 ; a 725× decrease in resistance at 5 ppm NO2 and detection limit <0.5 ppm, levels relevant for industry and public health. Furthermore, the Ni-MOF-74-based sensor is selective to NO 2 over N 2 , SO 2 , and air. Linking this fundamental research with future technologies, the high impedance of MOF-74 enables applications requiring a near-zero power sensor or dosimeter, with the active material drawing <15 pW for a macroscale device 35 mm 2 with 0.8 mg MOF-74. Finally, this represents a 10 4 –10 6 × decrease in power consumption compared to other MOF sensors and demonstrates the potential for MOFs as active components for long-lived, near-zero power chemical sensors in smart industrial systems and the internet of things.

Multimodal Characterization of Crystal Structure and Formation in Rubrene Thin Films Reveals Erasure of Orientational Discontinuities

Abstract Multimodal multiscale characterization provide opportunities to study organic semiconducting thin films with multiple length scales, across multiple platforms, to elucidate crystallization mechanisms of the various microstructures that impact functionality. With polarized scanning transmission X‐ray and 4D‐scanning transmission electron microscopy, hybrid crystalline structures in rubrene thin films in which large crystalline domains surround a common nucleus and transition to a spherulite morphology at larger radii is observed. These high‐resolution techniques reveal how azimuthal orientational discontinuities at smaller radii are erased as spherulite morphology takes hold. In situ crystallization in the films with optical microscopy is also captured, discovering the importance of considering the initial temperature increase of a film during thermal annealing over the crystallization timescale. This kinetic information of the radial crystallization rate and of corresponding film heating kinetics is used to estimate the temperature at which the larger crystalline regions transition into a spherulite. By combining the results obtained from the different characterization modes, it is learned that thermal conditions can sensitively affect the crystallization of rubrene and other organic thin films. The observations suggest opportunities for more complex temperature‐dependent processing to maximize hybrid structures’ functionality in organic thin films and demonstrate that multimodal studies deepen the understanding of structure‐function dynamics.

Fractional Skyrmion Tubes in Chiral‐Interfaced 3D Magnetic Nanowires

Magnetic skyrmions are chiral spin textures with rich physics and great potential for unconventional computing. Typically, skyrmions form in bulk crystals with reduced symmetry or ultrathin film multilayers involving heavy metals. Here, the formation of fractional Bloch skyrmion tubes at room temperature is demonstrated by 3D printing ferromagnetic double‐helix nanowires with two regions of opposite chirality. Using X‐ray microscopy and micromagnetic simulations, it is shown that the coexistence of vortex and anti‐parallel spin states induces the formation of fractional skyrmion tubes at zero magnetic fields, minimizing the energy cost of breaking the coupling between geometric and magnetic chirality. Control over zero‐field states is also demonstrated, including pure vortex, or mixed skyrmion‐vortex states, highlighting the magnetic reconfigurability of these 3D nanowires. This work shows how interfacing chiral geometries at the nanoscale can enable advanced forms of topological spintronics.

Reversible Phase Transitions Enable Cyclic Isothermal CO 2 Capture in Redox‐Activated Perovskite‐Structured Sorbents

Sorption‐enhanced steam reforming and gasification using CO 2 sorbents enable the production of H 2 ‐rich syngas from carbonaceous feedstocks but are limited by significant temperature swings and sintering‐induced activity loss. Perovskite‐structured oxides are presented herein as sintering‐resistant, redox‐activated isothermal CO 2 sorbents capable of overcoming these challenges by releasing lattice oxygen to partially oxidize the carbonaceous feedstock while capturing CO 2 , shifting equilibrium toward H 2 production. Building on this, the structural and thermodynamic impact of Fe doping on the CO 2 sorption properties of SrMn 1‐ x Fe x O 3‐ δ is investigated for sorption‐enhanced reforming. Experimental results demonstrate that these sorbents enable isothermal production of high‐quality, H 2 ‐enriched syngas from carbonaceous feedstocks. Laboratory and synchrotron‐based powder X‐ray diffraction analyses, coupled with density functional theory calculations, reveal the structural dynamics and energy landscape of the SrMn 1‐ x Fe x O 3‐ δ perovskite system under reaction conditions, elucidating the solid‐state reaction pathway and the effect of Fe doping on the extent of carbonation.

A Stable, Low Permeable TEMPO Catholyte for Aqueous Total Organic Redox Flow Batteries

We report aqueous organic redox flow batteries (AORFBs) are highly attractive for large-scale energy storage because of their nonflammability, low cost, and sustainability. (2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl (TEMPO) derivatives, a class of redox active molecules bearing air-stable free nitroxyl radicals and high redox potential (>0.8 V vs NHE), has been identified as promising catholytes for AORFBs. However, reported TEMPO based molecules are either permeable through ion exchange membranes or not chemically stable enough for long-term energy storage. Herein, a new TEMPO derivative functionalized with a dual-ammonium dicationic group, N 1 , N 1 , N 1 , N 3 , N 3 , 2, 2, 6, 6-nonamethyl-N 3 -(piperidinyloxy)propane-1,3-bis(ammonium) dichloride (N 2 -TEMPO) as a stable, low permeable catholyte for AORFBs is reported. Ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H-NMR) spectroscopic studies reveal its exceptional stability and ultra-low permeability (1.49 × 10 -12 cm 2 s -1 ). Coupled with 1,1'-bis[3-(trimethylammonio)propyl]-4,4'-bipyridinium tetrachloride ((NPr) 2 V) as an anolyte, a 1.35 V N2-TEMPO/(NPr)2V AORFB with 0.5 m electrolytes (9.05 Wh L -1 ) delivers a high power density of 114 mW cm -2 and 100% capacity retention for 400 cycles at 60 mA cm-2. At 1.0 m electrolyte concentrations, the N 2 -TEMPO/(NPr) 2 V AORFB achieves an energy density of 18.1 Wh L -1 and capacity retention of 90% for 400 cycles at 60 mA cm -2 .

Gd-Ni-Sb-SnO 2 electrocatalysts for active and selective ozone production

Direct electrochemical production of dissolved ozone could potentially provide economic wastewater treatment and sanitation or a valuable chemical oxidant. Although Ni-Sb-SnO 2 electrocatalysts have the highest known faradaic efficiencies for electrochemical ozone production, the activity and selectivity are not yet sufficient for commercial implementation. This report finds that co-doping Ni and Gd increases the ozone selectivity by a factor of three over Ni alone. These findings are the first demonstration of an active dopant other than Ni in SnO 2 . Electrochemical and physical characterization show that trends in ozone activity are caused by chemical catalysis, not morphology effects, and that conduction band alignment is not a catalytic descriptor for the system. Selective radical quenching experiments and quantum chemistry calculations of thermodynamic energies suggest that the kinetic barriers to form solution-phase intermediates are important for understanding the role of dopants in electrochemical ozone production.

Multihead Attention U‐Net for Magnetic Particle Imaging–Computed Tomography Image Segmentation

Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) is an emerging noninvasive molecular imaging modality with high sensitivity and specificity, exceptional linear quantitative ability, and potential for successful applications in clinical settings. Computed tomography (CT) is typically combined with the MPI image to obtain more anatomical information. Herein, a deep learning‐based approach for MPI‐CT image segmentation is presented. The dataset utilized in training the proposed deep learning model is obtained from a transgenic mouse model of breast cancer following administration of indocyanine green (ICG)‐conjugated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoworms (NWs‐ICG) as the tracer. The NWs‐ICG particles progressively accumulate in tumors due to the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect. The proposed deep learning model exploits the advantages of the multihead attention mechanism and the U‐Net model to perform segmentation on the MPI‐CT images, showing superb results. In addition, the model is characterized with a different number of attention heads to explore the optimal number for our custom MPI‐CT dataset.

Nitrogen–Rich Conjugated Macrocycles: Synthesis, Conductivity, and Application in Electrochemical CO 2 Capture

Here we report a series of nitrogen-rich conjugated macrocycles that mimic the structure and function of semiconducting 2D metal–organic and covalent organic frameworks while providing greater solution processability and surface tunability. Using a new tetraaminotriphenylene building block that is compatible with both coordination chemistry and dynamic covalent chemistry reactions, we have synthesized two distinct macrocyclic cores containing Ni–N and phenazine-based linkages, respectively. The fully conjugated macrocycle cores support strong interlayer stacking and accessible nanochannels. For the metal–organic macrocycles, good out-of-plane charge transport is preserved, with pressed pellet conductivities of 10 –3 S/cm for the nickel variants. Lastly, using electrochemically mediated CO2 capture as an example, we illustrate how colloidal phenazine-based organic macrocycles improve electrical contact and active site electrochemical accessibility relative to bulk covalent organic framework powders. Together, these results highlight how simple macrocycles can enable new synthetic directions as well as new applications by combining the properties of crystalline porous frameworks, the processability of nanomaterials, and the precision of molecular synthesis.

Elucidating Instabilities Contributing to Capacity Fade in Bipyridine‐Based Materials for Non‐aqueous Flow Batteries

Abstract Metal‐based non‐aqueous redox flow batteries have the potential for long‐term energy storage if stability requirements can be achieved. One such stability issue in metal coordination complexes arises from ligand shedding in the anolyte upon reduction. Recognizing that the free ligands are relatively more stable than the metal coordination complex under highly reducing conditions, we evaluated a family of metal‐free bipyridinium materials as flow battery anolytes with the corresponding iron coordination complex as the catholyte. Bipyridinium compounds were functionalized for increased electrochemical stability, cycled in flow cells to understand efficiencies, and analyzed for degradation products. Methylation of the bipyridine nitrogens increased electrochemical stability yet left the reduced molecule susceptible to radical‐induced bond cleavage. Subsequent functionalization of bipyridine with carbomethoxy groups resulted in good battery performance with 96 % Coulombic and 90 % voltage efficiency, and improved cycling stability over a methoxy‐substituted anolyte with 14 % vs 36 % capacity fade in the first charge‐discharge cycle.

Grazing-Incidence Texture Tomography and Diffuse Reflectivity Tomography of an Organic Semiconductor Device Array

The use of grazing-incidence scattering methods for the characterization of 2D patterned organic thin films is limited due to the elongated 1D footprint of the X-ray beam on the sample. However, this characteristic feature can be turned into an advantage, when combined with tomographic reconstruction. In this pilot study we show, how the use of a chosen texture reflection and a diffuse reflectivity signal can each provide 2D images of the deposits, simultaneously revealing the organic film's crystal orientation and the location of the metal electrodes in a field-effect transistor structure from a single sequence of diffraction images.

Fabrication of hybrid tin oxide‐cellulose nanocomposite as the flexible and thin supercapacitor

Abstract Microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) with reinforcing effects is a useful building block in the fabrication of flexible and thin supercapacitors. Herein, a hybrid tin oxide‐cellulose nanocomposite was hydrothermally produced and coated on MFC thin films to form a supercapacitor. The hybrid tin oxide‐cellulose thin films were structurally analyzed using scanning electrode microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and x‐ray diffraction. The cellulose thin film with the highest loading of hybrid tin oxide‐cellulose nanocomposite exhibited a specific capacitance of 225.88 F g −1 at 100 mV s −1 and 486.38 F g −1 at 20 mV s −1 in the three‐electrode electrochemical system. In addition, it revealed good cyclic stability up to 40 cycles run continuously with 95% cyclic retention. The high specific capacitance and superior cyclic stability could be related to the enhanced charge mobility and ion diffusion between the solid and electrolyte interface. The cellulose thin film coated with flower‐like hybrid nanocomposite showed great potential in energy storage.

Recurrent and convolutional neural networks for sequential multispectral optoacoustic tomography ( MSOT ) imaging

Abstract Multispectral optoacoustic tomography (MSOT) is a beneficial technique for diagnosing and analyzing biological samples since it provides meticulous details in anatomy and physiology. However, acquiring high through‐plane resolution volumetric MSOT is time‐consuming. Here, we propose a deep learning model based on hybrid recurrent and convolutional neural networks to generate sequential cross‐sectional images for an MSOT system. This system provides three modalities (MSOT, ultrasound, and optoacoustic imaging of a specific exogenous contrast agent) in a single scan. This study used ICG‐conjugated nanoworms particles (NWs‐ICG) as the contrast agent. Instead of acquiring seven images with a step size of 0.1 mm, we can receive two images with a step size of 0.6 mm as input for the proposed deep learning model. The deep learning model can generate five other images with a step size of 0.1 mm between these two input images meaning we can reduce acquisition time by approximately 71%.

Functional analysis of Salix purpurea genes support roles for ARR17 and GATA15 as master regulators of sex determination

Abstract The Salicaceae family is of growing interest in the study of dioecy in plants because the sex determination region (SDR) has been shown to be highly dynamic, with differing locations and heterogametic systems between species. Without the ability to transform and regenerate Salix in tissue culture, previous studies investigating the mechanisms regulating sex in the genus Salix have been limited to genome resequencing and differential gene expression, which are mostly descriptive in nature, and functional validation of candidate sex determination genes has not yet been conducted. Here, we used Arabidopsis to functionally characterize a suite of previously identified candidate genes involved in sex determination and sex dimorphism in the bioenergy shrub willow Salix purpurea . Six candidate master regulator genes for sex determination were heterologously expressed in Arabidopsis, followed by floral proteome analysis. In addition, 11 transcription factors with predicted roles in mediating sex dimorphism downstream of the SDR were tested using DAP‐Seq in both male and female S. purpurea DNA. The results of this study provide further evidence to support models for the roles of ARR17 and GATA15 as master regulator genes of sex determination in S. purpurea , contributing to a regulatory system that is notably different from that of its sister genus Populus . Evidence was also obtained for the roles of two transcription factors, an AP2 / ERF family gene and a homeodomain‐like transcription factor, in downstream regulation of sex dimorphism.

Solution‐Like Water Transport Across Molecular to Macroscopic Length Scales in Crosslinked Poly(Ethylene Glycol Diacrylate) Networks With Tailored Sidechains

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)‐based materials, like PEG‐diacrylate (PEGDA), are prized for their hydrophilic, inert properties, and leveraged in hydrogels and as membrane mimics. While network chemistry is often tuned for selective transport and antifouling, fundamental understanding of water dynamics at the network surface and the impact on bulk transport is limited. We utilize Overhauser dynamic nuclear polarization (ODNP) to measure nanoscale water diffusivity near a tethered spin label at the water‐polymer surface and compare it to bulk water diffusivity from pulsed field gradient (PFG) NMR. Via active ester chemistry, spin labels and varied sidechain chemistries are introduced, modulating network hydrophilicity. Tuning network hydration through crosslinker content and functional groups further impacts water diffusivity. Results show rapid nanoscale water transport at the polymer surface, reflecting network volumetric water content, with further modulation by sidechain functionality. These findings demonstrate PEGDA's utility as a membrane mimic and the critical impact of network chemistry on water transport.

Azimuthal single- and double-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic lepton scattering by transversely polarized protons

A comprehensive set of azimuthal single-spin and double-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive leptoproduction of pions, charged kaons, protons, and antiprotons from transversely polarized protons is presented. These asymmetries include the previously published HERMES results on Collins and Sivers asymmetries, the analysis of which has been extended to include protons and antiprotons and also to an extraction in a three-dimensional kinematic binning and enlarged phase space. They are complemented by corresponding results for the remaining four single-spin and four double-spin asymmetries allowed in the one-photon-exchange approximation of the semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering process for target-polarization orientation perpendicular to the direction of the incoming lepton beam. Among those results, significant non-vanishing cos ( Φ–Φ S ) modulations provide evidence for a sizable worm-gear (II) distribution, ${g}_{1\mathrm{T}}^q\left(x,{\mathrm{p}}_T^2\right)$. Most of the other modulations are found to be consistent with zero with the notable exception of large sin ( Φ S ) modulations for charged pions and K + .
