Analytical and experimental investigation of liquid double drop dynamics: Preliminary design for space shuttle experiments

The preliminary grant assessed the use of laboratory experiments for simulating low g liquid drop experiments in the space shuttle environment. Investigations were begun of appropriate immiscible liquid systems, design of experimental apparatus and analyses. The current grant continued these topics, completed construction and preliminary testing of the experimental apparatus, and performed experiments on single and compound liquid drops. A continuing assessment of laboratory capabilities, and the interests of project personnel and available collaborators, led to, after consultations with NASA personnel, a research emphasis specializing on compound drops consisting of hollow plastic or elastic spheroids filled with liquids.

Dynamic centering of liquid shells

The moderate-amplitude axisymmetric oscillations of an inviscid liquid shell surrounding an incompressible gas bubble are calculated by a multiple-time-scale expansion for initial deformations composed of two-lobed perturbations of the shell and a displacement of the bubble from the center of mass of the liquid. Two types of small-amplitude motion are identified and lead to very different nonlinear dynamic interactions, as described by the results valid up to second order in the amplitude of the initial deformation. In the 'bubble mode', the oscillations of the captive bubble and the liquid shell are exactly in phase and the bubble vibrates about its initial eccentric location. The bubble moves toward the center of the drop when the shell is perturbed into a 'sloshing mode' of oscillation where both interfaces move out of phase. These results explain the centering of liquid shells observed in several experiments.

Liquid rocket propellant feedline dynamics

An analytical and experimental study of liquid rocket propellant feedline dynamics has been performed. The analytical model, which includes the effects of turbulent flow, distributed and local compliances, bellows, side branches, and structural mounting stiffness, was verified by an experimental program. Water was used as the internal fluid and the dynamic perturbations in pressure and flow were created by a piston pulser. Measurements were made to determine the pressure perturbation amplitude and phase at the line terminal due to a sinusoidal pulser excitation. The frequency response of the various line configurations tested were compared with the computed theoretical results.

Two reference time scales for studying the dynamic cavitation of liquid films

Two formulas, one for characteristic time of filling a void with a vapor of the surrounding liquid, and one of filling the void by diffusion of the dissolved gas in the liquid, are derived. Based on this analysis, it is seen that in an oil film bearing operating under dynamic loads, the content of cavitation region should be oil vapor rather than the air liberated from solution, if the oil is free of entrained air.

Charge Tethering Drives Intermediate-Range Order and Slow Dynamics in Zwitterionic Liquids

We have synthesized and characterized a family of zwitterionic liquids (ZwLs) based on the poly(ethylene oxide) imidazolium cation and the alkyl sulfonate anion. To better rationalize ZwLs′ structural behavior and networkforming properties, we have computationally studied them in contrast to isostructural but chemically untethered ionic liquid (IL) analogues. Perhaps surprisingly, it is the molecular liquids and not the ILs that show the most selfassembly and intermediate-range order associated with scattering prepeaks; the ZwLs display also the slowest dynamics. This is consistent with prior work showing the importance of networks in considering the viscoelastic relaxation of liquids. We find that, because of their significantly large molecular dipoles, these zwitterions are versatile network-building blocks that result in highly viscous liquids. From a structural perspective, networks in these ZwLs sit somewhere in between what would be true chemical connectivity and the Coulombic networks observed in ionic liquids.

Using the Flow-3D General Moving Object Model to Simulate Coupled Liquid Slosh - Container Dynamics on the SPHERES Slosh Experiment: Aboard the International Space Station

The SPHERES Slosh Experiment (SSE) is a free floating experimental platform developed for the acquisition of long duration liquid slosh data aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The data sets collected will be used to benchmark numerical models to aid in the design of rocket and spacecraft propulsion systems. Utilizing two SPHERES Satellites, the experiment will be moved through different maneuvers designed to induce liquid slosh in the experiment's internal tank. The SSE has a total of twenty-four thrusters to move the experiment. In order to design slosh generating maneuvers, a parametric study with three maneuvers types was conducted using the General Moving Object (GMO) model in Flow-30. The three types of maneuvers are a translation maneuver, a rotation maneuver and a combined rotation translation maneuver. The effectiveness of each maneuver to generate slosh is determined by the deviation of the experiment's trajectory as compared to a dry mass trajectory. To fully capture the effect of liquid re-distribution on experiment trajectory, each thruster is modeled as an independent force point in the Flow-3D simulation. This is accomplished by modifying the total number of independent forces in the GMO model from the standard five to twenty-four. Results demonstrate that the most effective slosh generating maneuvers for all motions occurs when SSE thrusters are producing the highest changes in SSE acceleration. The results also demonstrate that several centimeters of trajectory deviation between the dry and slosh cases occur during the maneuvers; while these deviations seem small, they are measureable by SSE instrumentation.

Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Liquid and Polymer Electrolytes for Energy Storage Devices

Advancing beyond current lithium-ion technology is necessary in order to enable energy storage devices for electric airplanes. Electrolyte stability is a key limiting factor, yet the design of improved electrolytes remains a formidable challenge. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are a powerful tool for studying electrolytes, since they can be used to evaluate structural, thermodynamic, and transport properties, and can provide molecular-level detail often inaccessible to experimental techniques. Our computational materials groups at the NASA Ames Research Center has developed models and methods to accurately simulate both liquid and polymer electrolytes. We report the results from atomistic MD simulations of several electrolyte materials, with lithium salts dissolved in ionic liquids, dimethoxyethane (DME), and polyethylene oxide (PEO). For improved accuracy, we employ polarizable models, where each atom is given an environment-dependent atomic dipole. The simulations accurately predict bulk transport properties, including viscosity, diffusion, and ionic conductivity, in quantitative agreement with available experimental data. Moreover, the simulations provide important insights into the solvation structure of the lithium ions.We also report the results from coarse-grained MD simulations of polyanion electrolytes. In order to more efficiently capture the longer length- and time-scales of these systems, we employ a generic bead-spring model. These simulations provide important insight into how the polymer chain architecture and ionic interaction strengths affect the ionic aggregation behavior and cation dynamics. Despite the simplicity of the model, the simulations yield qualitative agreement with experimental data for similar systems.

Visualizing Millisecond Atomic Dynamics of Nanocrystals in Liquid

Atomic structures of nanomaterials are inherently dynamic and continuously reshaped through interactions with chemical species and external stimuli. Such dynamics are further amplified as the size and dimensionality of nanomaterials decrease. Despite advances in analytical methods, it remains challenging to capture the structural dynamics of nanomaterials in reactive environments with both atomic spatial resolution and commensurate temporal resolution. Here, in this study, we directly visualize atomic-scale dynamics of gold (Au) nanocrystals in reactive liquid environments with millisecond-speed liquid-cell electron microscopy (EM) and deep-learning denoising. We uncover reversible fluctuations in the local crystallinity of Au nanocrystals dependent on the surrounding chemical environment. These transient fluctuations, driven by interactions at nanocrystal–liquid interfaces, critically influence the dissolution kinetics and grain boundary relaxation. By overcoming the spatiotemporal limitations in conventional liquid-cell EM, our findings provide insights into how transient nanoscale structures dictate the stability and reactivity of nanomaterials.

Dynamics of stratified liquids in the presence of space charge.

The dispersion characteristics of small signal electrohydrodynamic space charge and polarization waves in continuously and discretely stratified liquids are developed. The liquids, modeled as incompressible, inviscid, and perfectly insulating have distributions of mass density, charge density, permittivity, and electric field. A general set of relations for perturbation field and flow variables defined for a prototype layer are used to describe the dynamics of many superposed planar layers. It is shown that the general relations can be used to represent systems of coupled layers which approximate continuous distributions by a series of step functions. Specific examples of weak gradient and exponential distributions are presented showing that the solution found directly from the distributed theory is approached by the system of coupled layers, if the limit is taken in which the number of layers become large while each layer thickness approaches zero.

Dynamical correlation between ions in liquid seen in real space and time

Controlling ionic transport in liquids is anticipated to provide new scientific and technological opportunities, but it requires accurate knowledge of atomic-scale dynamics of ions beyond the hydrodynamic description. Atomic dynamics in liquids is characterized by strong and dynamical correlations among atoms, which render a conventional approach to describing the dynamics in reciprocal space challenging. We propose an alternative approach to describe liquid dynamics in real space and time using the time-delayed two-body correlation function, Van Hove correlation function, and discuss recent results on the local dynamics in water and electrolytes.

Experimental, Numerical, and Analytical Slosh Dynamics of Water and Liquid Nitrogen in a Spherical Tank

Understanding, predicting, and controlling fluid slosh dynamics is critical to safety and improving performance of space missions when a significant percentage of the spacecraft's mass is a liquid. Computational fluid dynamics simulations can be used to predict the dynamics of slosh, but these programs require extensive validation. Many experimental and numerical studies of water slosh have been conducted. However, slosh data for cryogenic liquids is lacking. Water and cryogenic liquid nitrogen are used in various ground-based tests with a spherical tank to characterize damping, slosh mode frequencies, and slosh forces. A single ring baffle is installed in the tank for some of the tests. Analytical models for slosh modes, slosh forces, and baffle damping are constructed based on prior work. Select experiments are simulated using a commercial CFD software, and the numerical results are compared to the analytical and experimental results for the purposes of validation and methodology-improvement.
