Aligned magnetohydrodynamic solution for solar wind flow past the earth's magnetosphere

Exact numerical solutions of the MHD equations for a perfect dissipationless gas with aligned magnetic field are given for conditions representative of steady supersonic solar wind flow past an axisymmetric model of the earth's magnetosphere. The solution is based on use of a transformation that relates without approximation the equations of magnetohydrodynamics to those of gasdynamics of a pseudogas that has an unusual equation of state. The results confirm the applicability of the previously existing gasdynamic solutions for the typically modest intensities of the interplanetary magnetic field that lead to Alfven Mach numbers of about 10 or greater. For smaller values, however, significant effects are indicated with the flanks of the bow wave moving away from the earth and the nose moving toward the earth. The results are consistent with direct observations in space.

Prediction of performance of two-phase flow nozzle and liquid metal magnetohydrodynamic (LMMHD) generator for no slip condition

Two-phase LMMHD energy conversion systems have potentially significant advantages over conventional systems such as higher thermal efficiency and substantial simplicity with lower capital and maintenance costs. Maintenance of low velocity slip is of importance for achieving high generator efficiency. A bubbly flow pattern ensures very low velocity slip. The full governing equations have been written out, and a computer prediction code has been developed to analyze performance of a two-phase flow LMMHD generator and nozzle under conditions of no slip. Three different shapes of a LMMHD generator have been investigated. Electrical power outputs are in the 20 kW range. Generator efficiency exceeds 71 percent at an average void fraction of about 70 percent. This is an appreciable performance for a short generator without insulating vanes for minimizing electrical losses in the end regions.

Numerical Modeling of Three-Dimensional Confined Flows

A three dimensional confined flow model is presented. The flow field is computed by calculating velocity and enthalpy along a set of streamlines. The finite difference equations are obtained by applying conservation principles to streamtubes constructed around the chosen streamlines. With appropriate substitutions for the body force terms, the approach computes three dimensional magnetohydrodynamic channel flows. A listing of a computer code, based on this approach is presented in FORTRAN IV language. The code computes three dimensional compressible viscous flow through a rectangular duct, with the duct cross section specified along the axis.

Magnetic field, reconnection, and particle acceleration in extragalactic jets

Extra-galactic radio jets are investigated theoretically taking into account that the jet magnetic field is dragged out from the central rotating source by the jet flow. Thus, magnetohydrodynamic models of jets are considered with zero net poloidal current and flux, and consequently a predominantly toroidal magnetic field. The magnetic field naturally has a cylindrical neutral layer. Collisionless reconnection of the magnetic field in the vicinity of the neutral layer acts to generate a non-axisymmetric radial magnetic field. In turn, axial shear-stretching of reconnected toroidal field gives rise to a significant axial magnetic field if the flow energy-density is larger than the energy-density of the magnetic field. This can lead to jets with an apparent longitudinal magnetic field as observed in the Fanaroff-Riley class II jets. In the opposite limit, where the field energy-density is large, the field remains mainly toroidal as observed in Fanaroff-Riley class I jets. Driven collisionless reconnection at neutral layers may lead to acceleration of electrons to relativistic energies in the weak electrostatic field of the neutral layer. A simple model is discussed for particle acceleration at neutral layers in electron/positron and electron/proton plasmas.
