Software For Uniaxial Mechanical Testing Of Materials

Materials Testing Software system designed to simplify and automate both routine and not-so-routine materials-testing tasks encountered in laboratory. Supports plan/test/analyze cycle through collection of programs, each optimized to specific task. Gives precise control over nature of command waveforms and acquisition of data, including dynamically variable waveform types, sets of data-acquisition channels, and data rates. Differing command and data-acquisition rates required for exploring creep and fatigue material behavior easily accommodated. Written in Modula-2.

Protocol for Atomic Oxygen Testing of Materials in Ground-Based Facilities

A second version of standard guidelines is proposed for improving materials testing in ground-based atomic oxygen environments for the purpose of predicting the durability of the tested materials in low Earth orbit (LEO). Accompanying these guidelines are background information and notes about testing. Both the guidelines and the additional information are intended to aid users who wish to evaluate the potential hazard of atomic oxygen in LEO to a candidate space component without actually flying the component in space, and to provide a framework for more consistent atomic oxygen testing in the future.

A High Temperature Cyclic Oxidation Data Base for Selected Materials Tested at NASA Glenn Research Center

The cyclic oxidation test results for some 1000 high temperature commercial and experimental alloys have been collected in an EXCEL database. This database represents over thirty years of research at NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The data is in the form of a series of runs of specific weight change versus time values for a set of samples tested at a given temperature, cycle time, and exposure time. Included on each run is a set of embedded plots of the critical data. The nature of the data is discussed along with analysis of the cyclic oxidation process. In addition examples are given as to how a set of results can be analyzed. The data is assembled on a read-only compact disk which is available on request from Materials Durability Branch, NASA Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, Ohio.

Superalloy material test in a plasma arc tunnel

Seven superalloy models were tested in a plasma arc tunnel at the peak heating condition existing on the space shuttle orbiter's lower surface during a low cross-range entry. The models were 3 x 3 in. flat surfaces, nominally 0.01 to 0.02 in. thick, and were held in a water-cooled wedge holder at a 60 deg angle of attack. Five test models were recycled 25 times for 10 min periods (two were recycled 50 times) in a Mach 4.6 test stream, with the model's leading edge temperature maintained at 2200 F (2000 F in one case).

Aircraft seat cushion materials tests

Five component level flammability tests were conducted in a 400 cubic foot chamber to determine the products of combustion and relative destruction of coated (with fire-retardants) and uncoated polyurethane foams during exposure of the foams to a large flaming ignition source for five minutes. The test results indicate that the improved state-of-the-art polyurethane foams without the added fire retardant and coating treatments were not significantly better than untreated older less fire-resistant polyurethane foams. however, by treating and coating the state-of-the-art foams, the production of toxic gases was delayed and the destruction of the foam limited.

Engine cyclic durability by analysis and material testing

The problem of calculating turbine engine component durability is addressed. Nonlinear, finite-element structural analyses, cyclic constitutive behavior models, and an advanced creep-fatigue life prediction method called strainrange partitioning were assessed for their applicability to the solution of durability problems in hot-section components of gas turbine engines. Three different component or subcomponent geometries are examined: a stress concentration in a turbine disk; a louver lip of a half-scale combustor liner; and a squealer tip of a first-stage high-pressure turbine blade. Cyclic structural analyses were performed for all three problems. The computed strain-temperature histories at the critical locations of the combustor linear and turbine blade components were imposed on smooth specimens in uniaxial, strain-controlled, thermomechanical fatigue tests of evaluate the structural and life analysis methods.

Bearing/Bypass Material-Testing System

System developed to test specimens in compression as well as tension while maintaining constant bearing/bypass ration. Test specimen with centrally located hole is clamped between two bearing-guide plates using one bolt. Bearing-guide plates then secured to two bearing-load cells. Test specimen independently loaded at both ends, using two separate control systems identified as applied and bypass. If two end loads unequal, difference between them reacted as bolt-bearing load on specimen. Throughout test, two control systems synchronized by common input signal (increasing voltage). As result, loads remain proportional as they increase.

Automation software for a materials testing laboratory

A comprehensive software system for automating much of the experimental process has recently been completed at the Lewis Research Center's high-temperature fatigue and structures laboratory. The system was designed to support experiment definition and conduct, results analysis and archiving, and report generation activities. This was accomplished through the design and construction of several software systems, as well as through the use of several commercially available software products, all operating on a local, distributed minicomputer system. Experimental capabilities currently supported in an automated fashion include both isothermal and thermomechanical fatigue and deformation testing capabilities. The future growth and expansion of this system will be directed toward providing multiaxial test control, enhanced thermomechanical test control, and higher test frequency (hundreds of hertz).

Arcjets for Aerodynamic and Materials Testing: Flow Characterization

Potential use of Arcjets as a hypersonic ground test facility for aerodynamic testing of future space vehicles is examined. Since high fidelity simulation of flight freestream conditions is a basic requirement for any useful ground test facility, it is imperative that the Arcjet flow field be thoroughly investigated in a systematic and orderly manner. At the same time we must know how and to what extent an inaccurate simulation of the flight freestream will effect the test data. The paper after discussing these two topics, describes various experimental techniques for Arcjet flow characterization. Results from an on-going Arcjet flow characterization program are also presented.

Structures, Design and Test: Materials

NASA Marshall has developed a technology that combines a film/adhesive laydown module with fiber placement technology to enable the processing of composite prepreg tow/tape and films, foils, or adhesives on the same placement machine. The deve!opment of this technology grew out of NASA's need for lightweight, permeation-resistant cryogenic propellant tanks.

Modeling and Analysis of Facility Systems for A Hybrid Materials Test Program

Analytic modeling and analysis processes employed at NASA-SSC in rocket propulsion systems testing are discussed in this paper with application to test facility propellant supply system design, activation and test of a hybrid rocket motor provided. This paper discusses the analytic model employed, its utilization across project phases and reviews performance results.

Material Testing in Support of the ISS Electrochemical Disinfection Feasibility Study

Microbial contamination and subsequent growth in spacecraft water systems are constant concerns for missions involving human crews. The current potable water disinfectant for the International Space Station (ISS) is iodine; however, with the end of the Space Shuttle program, there is a need to develop redundant biocide systems that do not require regular up ]mass dependencies. Throughout the course of a year, four different electrochemical systems were investigated as a possible biocide for potable water on the ISS. Research has indicated that there is a wide variability with regards to efficacy in both concentration and exposure time of these disinfectants, therefore baseline efficacy values were established. This paper describes a series of tests performed in order to establish optimal concentrations and exposure times for four disinfectants against single and mixed species planktonic and biofilm bacteria. Results of the testing determined whether these electrochemical disinfection systems are able to produce a sufficient amount of chemical in both concentration and volume to act as a biocide for potable water on ISS.
