FY20 Verification of BISON Using Analytic and Manufactured Solutions

In 2010, the U.S. Department of Energy created its first Energy Innovation Hub, which is focused on developing high-fidelity and high-resolution Modeling and Simulation (M&S) tools for modeling of Light Water Reactors (LWRs). This hub, Consortium for Advanced Simulation of LWRs (CASL), has developed an LWR simulation tool called Virtual Environment for Reactor Applications (VERA). The multi-physics capability of VERA is achieved through the coupling of single-physics codes, including BISON, CTF, MPACT, and MAMBA. BISON is a fuel performance code which models the thermo-mechanical behavior of nuclear fuel using high performance M&S. It is capable of modeling traditional LWR fuel rods, fuel plates, and TRi-structural ISOtropic (TRISO) fuel particles. It can employ three-dimensional Cartesian, two-dimensional axisymmetric cylindrical, or one-dimensional radial spherical geometry. It includes empirical models for a large variety of fuel physics: temperature- and burnup-dependent thermal properties, fuel swelling and densification, fission gas production, cladding creep, fracture, cladding plasticity, and gap/plenum models. This document details a series of code verification test problems that are used to test BISON. These problems add confidence that the BISON code is a faithful representation of its underlying mathematical model. The suite of verification tests are mapped to the underlying conservation equations solved by the code: heat conduction, mechanics, and species conservation. Twenty-two problems are added for the heat conduction solution, two for the mechanics solution, and none for species conservation. Method of Manufactured Solutions (MMS) capability is demonstrated with three problems, and temperature drops across the fuel gap are tested.

Surface interfacial analysis of simulant high level nuclear waste glass dissolved in synthetic cement solutions

Abstract The corrosion mechanisms and kinetics of a Mg-rich alkali aluminoborosilicate glass simulating UK high-level waste (CaZn28) were investigated upon dissolution in synthetic cement solutions. Dissolution varied as a function the different pH and alkali/alkaline earth content of each cement solution. High resolution microscopy and spectroscopy techniques ascertained the nature of the interface between the glass and the cement solutions. TEM-EDS revealed alkali- and alkaline earth-rich silica gels, into which K, Ca and Mg were incorporated. TEM-SAED, combined with synchrotron micro-focus XRD, identified the ubiquitous precipitation of the Mg-aluminate layered double hydroxide phase, meixnerite (Mg 6 Al 2 (OH) 18 ·4H 2 O), in addition to goethite (FeOOH) and crystalline silica. The C-S-H phase, tobermorite (Ca 5 Si 6 O 16 (OH) 2 ·4H 2 O), was identified in the most Ca-rich solution only. These data give insight to the role of alkali/alkaline earth-rich solutions in the dissolution or radioactive waste glasses, of importance to the final disposition in a geological disposal facility.

Theoretical and experimental quantification of Suzuki segregation enthalpy and strengthening mechanisms in a binary alloy

Solute segregation to planar defects in metallic alloys has been shown to drastically alter mechanical properties. While various works using first-principles and thermodynamic calculations have studied the fundamental driving forces for solute segregation via the Suzuki criterion, planar defect energy, or a comparison of energies of the HCP-like phase and FCC matrix, a quantitative experimental and computational comparison of equilibrium composition and segregation enthalpies has not yet been reported. In this work, we predict the equilibrium composition and segregation enthalpy to intrinsic stacking faults in a Ni-60Co (at.%) alloy and compare the results to two independent experimental methods. We observed that Co segregates to the innermost two planes of the intrinsic stacking fault, and we found that the experimental segregation enrichment, measured from transmission electron microscopy energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, of the faults is 6.8 at.% Co, which is 2.2 at.% less than the predicted value at the same temperature. We also find that the segregation enthalpy measured from the composition profile is −21.1 ± 6.4 meV/atom and separately from differential scanning calorimetry segregation enthalpy is −33.2 meV/atom, whereas the predicted enthalpy is −31 ± 1 meV/atom. Based on these results, we determine that segregation occurs very rapidly, within 8 min at temperatures as low as 36% of the homologous solidus temperature. Furthermore, this analysis provides an overview of the possible dislocation mechanisms responsible for strengthening effects due to solute segregation, and concludes that changes in room temperature hardness from local phase transformation is likely tied to post-segregation room temperature equilibrium partial separation distance.

SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego User Manual - Version 4.56

The SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego, henceforth referred to as Fuego, is the key element of the ASC fire environment simulation project. The fire environment simulation project is directed at characterizing both open large-scale pool fires and building enclosure fires. Fuego represents the turbulent, buoyantly-driven incompressible flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, combustion, soot, and absorption coefficient model portion of the simulation software. Using MPMD coupling, Scefire and Nalu handle the participating-media thermal radiation mechanics. This project is an integral part of the SIERRA multi-mechanics software development project. Fuego depends heavily upon the core architecture developments provided by SIERRA for massively parallel computing, solution adaptivity, and mechanics coupling on unstructured grids.
